Ok, so I realize that this is hugely up it's own arse and incredibly egocentric but I feel that I am in the company of kindred spirits here, so maybe we can indulge each others little fantasies, eh?  And I'm genuinely curious.

Sometimes I can hear a very distinct voice or use a really obvious actor for the characters in my stories and I wondered if you guys did the same?  Partly because it would interest me to read your fics with their voices in my head, if you see what I mean and partly because, well... it would be just the most amazing thing in the world to be able to cast up your own story, wouldn't it!?

I've only really got two very clear actors in "Rogue on the Rocks":-

Orsino - Jonathan Rhys-Davies (probably a bit obvious that one)
Guise du Malin - Peter O'Toole (mainly for his voice really).

So come on, you have an unlimited budget, who would you cast as your Original Characters (the characters you've made up yourself) in your fics?

[edit: just altered the subject line a tad]

Actually, I find this a very interesting topic, and I generally do it for my characters outside of games.

For my favorite warden, Legam Amell (seen in my avatar), I used the human male "Suave" voiceset (even though he's hardly suave). It was recorded by the same man who did the voice of Jowan, to give you an idea of what that set sounds like.

I imagine Legam's real voice to be very close to that, but about two pitches deeper. I'm not quite sure who I'd cast to fit that, though.

It's tricky isn't it - l think it's much easier to cast the whole package of a character than just the voice.

@ DalishRanger - My trouble, looking at your avatar of Legam, is that he looks (to me anyway) a little bit like Gerard Butler, so I can't get that out of my head now - not helped by the fact I've just had 300 on in the backgroud! Stupid, suggestible brain! I'll have to have a rootle about in the sound files to find the 'suave' set so I can get an idea of what you mean. Interesting.... *thinks* :)

I have to agree that I don't think this is egotistical at all, a lot of us have very specific characters that go into how we imagine they sound. For my character, I like the idea of the Suave sound in the game, but honestly, it doesn't sound suave at all to me. So I usually go with cocky even though it's hardly any closer to how I think my character sounds. For an actual voice actor, I would go with Avery Waddell, who voices the protagonist in Def Jam Icon and True Crime 2 New York. It's not so much how he talks, I mean he talks like you would expect a kid from the hood would talk, but it's how deep his voice is. It has a nice smoothness to it that I think the BioWare voices tend to lack.

[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie] ... Damn, now I can see a little bit of him ala 300 too. Good thing I draw fan art of him in my own style, so that image won't be forever embedded in my head. Not that Gerald Butler doesn't have an awesome voice, mind you - it just doesn't suit Legam.

Nah, don't trouble yourself. I have an audio editor and I can probably actually just tweak the voice sound myself to get it more accurate, then just link you to the soundbyte. I need to practice a little audio editing anyway. =]

EDIT: Did it. Unfortunately, there's a bit of slight echoing/static. Not sure how that happened, but I mimized it as best as I could figure out. Beyond that, it's quite close to his voice.

Ooh... I dunno. Haven't thought about this. I get character voices in my head, but not those of specific people.

Like Xai Merras: Antivan accent of course, very polished, very cultured, and smooth as sin...the sort of voice you want to keep listening to, even though it's probably going to be bad for your health. Like chocolate. ;) Seductive, but not in a sexy way at all.

Maybe Sigourney Weaver for Asleena (my PC)? She had the experienced/adventurer voice in my playthrough.

Hmm...

@Shadow - Yay! I was hoping you'd play and hoping you would bring up Xai! I wondered about Vincent Cassel? He's so good at being athletic/balletic, is pretty damn sexy and has an outrageous french accent which I'm sure he could augment into an Antivan one. What do you think? Like the idea of Sigourney Weaver too!

I had to look up Vincent Cassel on Youtube to remember who he is (I'm pretty horrible with actor names), and got a scene from Ocean's Twelve. I suddenly want Xai to be a really good dancer. XD *rubber stamp of approval!* You win!

Edit: I don't know who I'd get to act for Asleena, but Sigourney's voice fits. I'd have to look around for a body model. ;) Not a lot of action-oriented actresses out there, unfortunately. :/ Maybe she can just be CGI ;)

good question, Lorik would be too haunted to be played by gerard butler and too tough to be kevin mckidd so im going to have to go with Ray stevenson!

Aedan = Andy Whitfield and this makes me VERY happy. :)

I chose the 'cocky' voice it's actually quite similar!

@Sisimka - ooo yes...see what you mean. Gosh, how nice to have *him* running around in your head when you are writing! You lucky devil.

@westiex9 - I spot a 'Rome' fan! I was utterly hooked on it. Ray Stevenson - excellent excellent choice - *the* Cleopatra episode was one of my favourites ;) and of course the very very last line of the second series was brilliant.

Rome was such a great series.  I'm STILL upset they cancelled it.

I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to voice actors but if it was simply for voice acting then Aeron (non-warden oc from my Reaver fic) I think would be voiced quite well by Quinton Flynn (Reno and Axel from Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts as well as Kon from Bleach).

Actual actors I think probably Andrew Pleavin for Aeron Andrew Pleavin (that one Arcadian from 300) though younger preferrably

And for Cayln Brosca (my favorite warden pc) probably Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton in True Blood)

True Blood ... (eyes glaze over)

STAY ON TOPIC, STAY ON TOPIC!!

Ummm. someone mentioned Andy Whitfield. I've been watching Spartacus, and I do dig his voice a lot. I love it if he had a soundset for the game.

That was me.  I'm currently obsessed.  I'm going to get kicked out of the We <3 Alistair group if I post about Andy one more time...

But when I designed Aedan, he was who I had in mind and the voice fit perfectly!

(Been watching Spartacus too!)

Hurrah - I'm pleased people are indulging their casting fantasies

@Killoth - I love Steve Blums voice - so fantastically gravelly and rich, nice choice and can't fault your choice of Chris Pine - although to me, he is kind of forever burned into the Kirk role - he did it just so beautifully.

@Raixser - very annoyingly I can't picture Andrew Pleavin in my head - I mean I know you've linked a picture of him and everything but I can't 'see' him moving around and acting. He looks like a rather sturdy chap though - I'm rather fond of those ;) And I think Rutina Wesley is just amazing, I think she's fab in True Blood, really interesting actress and I like it that, whilst she's as cute as a button, she's not your standard telly-land fare but is a bit more real.

I was having a hard time visualizing Maebh. I wanted her to be a "handsome" woman, instead of "pretty". To serve as a contrast to Anora and as she took after Loghain. And then it hit me: Katherine Hepburn. Maebh looks like a young Katherine Hepburn. And I could imagine her playing her as well.

@Sagacious Rage - *claps excitedly* bravo for choosing a classic actress! (although, I must admit that I always thought Katherine Hepburn was stunning but I know what you mean - she certainly wasn't *pretty* or *girly*) But then you got me thinking and making a link I think you'll understand.. do you think a young Loghain might have looked a bit like Cary Grant? Only a Cary Grant with long hair and who had eaten quite a few protein shakes and who might have been introduced to a cross-trainer and some bar bells? Or am I mad as a bag of sticks? *ponders* Anyway, like the idea of Kat Hepburn very much! And with her voice too!

[Edit: - I've been thinking about this a bit and after reading some more of your fic, I think she's perfect. Particularly apt when she's squabbling with Anora - really good]

While I have no idea who'd play as an actor of Taiyama Surana, I do know for sure who would be doing his voice: my favorite voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal (who does the Violent male elf voice in the game, which is what I use for Taiyama).

Specifically, Taiyama's character develops over the course of the game so in my head, so does his voice. At the beginning he sounds like the guy who starts speaking at 3:05 here. Over the course of the game as he matures, his voice changes to one like the guy speaking in that video at 2:12 (which is almost just like the aforementioned Violent male elf voice in Dragon Age: Origins).

Heh, thanks for giving us a topic to do this kind of stuff. It's good fun to imagine what your character sounds like/who they would be played by in a movie.

For my current work I have in mind the character "Edgtho" from the movie the 13th Warrior. Now if you are familiar with the film, he is one of the few who survives to the end. In the film he's a scout, very reserved and quiet. He's a dark haired dual wielding warrior with a short beard. He looks like he's getting a little grey around the temples. The actor's name is Daniel Southern.

If you're just talking voice actor then I'd be looking for a bass or baritone recieved pronunciation type voice. Someone like Valentine Dyall only less dead. Rowan Atkinson maybe?

@Stuffy38 - Edgtho is my favourite after Herger (Dennis Storhøi - who I can't help but lust after) of course. V. good choice. In fact, 13th Warrior is a little seam of interesting actors isn't it! I also really like the guy that plays Weath (Tony Curran). He's in loads and loads of things - but never gets a main role - unless you count Underworld: Evolution but I'd rather not :S. Thanks for sharing that — a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel. ;)
