Well Bioware hasn't answered the question yet. Personally I think the race that the Keepers originated from are the one's who built the original Reapers and the Reapers turned on their creator's for whatever reason but that just my opinion and will have to wait for Bioware to answer it if they choose too not leave it a mystery.

Not sure who originally built them but I suspect they only very distantly resemble what they originally were. Like comparing out two million old mother species to modern day humans. They have been harvesting and advancing for millions of years, they may have started as a geth like species at some point. Apparently they have been harvesting the galaxy periodically for millions of years, I think I once heard it dated to around 32 million years, and likely were around a good while before they began making sapient-smoothies.

The Quarians.

The Reapers are actually just Geth who time travelled into the past and upgraded themselves.

The Reapers were invented by a human who went back in time millions of years who is also a Mary Sue self-insertion fantasy of the project director.

Oh wait not everybody is as rock stupid and arrogant as Brad Wardell, my bad.

Ancient humans invented them.

Then one day, during a previous battle, an original "human reaper" was killed and crash landed on earth, where the genetic material was leaked and humans grew on earth from it.

I'm thinking that they were merely the first species ever to exist in the galaxy. they eventually evolved to a point where they could be seen as "gods." Unstoppable, death dealing machines. The technology they created as they evolved (the mass relays) were left behind to influence evolution for all subsequent species. It's just a theory though.

I did. I was upgrading my toaster, and it suddenly attacked me and flew off into space. I assume it is building an army to send back in time and reap the galaxy of intelligent life for revenge...

I regret doing [data redacted] to it for so long. In hind sight, anything involving lube and a toaster is a bad idea.

it probably won't be revealed unless BioWare somehow makes it important to plot...to leave it open for future games.

Also, I doubt we'll be destroying the Reapers...again to make room for future games/books/etc...

I mean sure if they continue making ME games they can make up a new threat..but how do you trump the Reapers without it coming across as extremely lame? You don't...and any future threat after the Reapers just won't seem as threatening and bring down the quality...I mean what are we gonna fight next that can in any way come close to the threat the Reapers represent?

I think its the first Race to travel the stars, perhaps something came along a disease or event that caused them to consolidate there race into a machine. Perhaps they evolved to a point the felt this was there next step to evolution, perhaps they where a dying race & wanted to continue its survival in some fashion.

This my theory

Cthulhu people probably, why else would the reapers have phallic tentacle arms?

We better be destroying the Reapers or I won't buy the game.

I have a feeling ME3 will have a hundred or so Reapers making it to Milky Way to try and open the Citadel floodgates. There will be a massive epic battle and in the end the rest of the Reapers will be stuck in Darkspace for a couple million years. It will end with Shepard either saying "With humanity leading the charge, the Reapers will have another thing coming when they get here *dramatic fist clench*". Or "Together with the rest of the galaxy we will forge an indomitable force, a sum greater than all its parts to repel the Reapers when they arrive *dramatic fist clench."

Also, this leaves the story open to all kinds of sequels, prequels and spinoffs. Maybe you need to stop another Reaper plan, or an MMORPG where the Reapers take a back seat to other stuff(now that they're a distant threat), etc, etc.

They have created so rich a universe, they wouldn't really need to create new greater threats. They could make whole games off of the rachni wars, krogan rebellion, geth/quarian conflict, and even the first contact war. So I wouldn' t be that surprised if we do kill the reapers in the next game. Also, because of the ending of mass effect 2 showing that all the reapers are awake and on their way, they can't avoid having a massive showdown in mass effect 3, which can only end in the complete desctruction of either us or them. Personally, I don't want to see the reapers annihilated just yet because they are such an epic enemy (well sovereign was.. wasn't that impressed with harbinger)

I just hope that if we do kill the reapers in mass effect 3, that it will take up a massive portion of the game to do so in an epic battle... I hated the whole let's go spend the whole game trying to recruit a huge team and win over their loyalties in seperate individual missions as we prepare for a short quick final mission type format that me 2 had. I would hate to see a large chunk of mass effect 3 being devoted to rounding up loyalties of races to join your fight. I hope if they do that, that it is done quickly. I mean, really... The whole galaxy is staring down the barrel of a gun and I have to go to some abandoned complex and blow it up just so one of my teammates will trust me? really? Because ya know,  if the threat of complete annihilation wasn't enough to motivate people to rally to my cause, then damn... the galaxy is screwed.

the reapers built themselves. its obvious they were once an organic race. perhaps the very first. they have just bent thereselves into beleiving they are gods and cannot be killed. The created themselves. probably so they would never die. Or maybe something else. either way. they are part organic. Or it could be like something from the matrix were they were built like the geth and for whatever reason need to live off of organics. like in the matrix
