I think the conflict between the Quarians and the the Geth would perhaps be a modern day re-enactment between what happened to the Reapers and their Creators.

The creator race creating a being that acquired sentience and then tried to destroy them making them the enemies of all natural born sentient races. There may even be some reapers who are not hostile just like there are geth who are not.

Or I had a really crazy dream

I think the Reapers started off something like the Geth, although who knows the details? Over time they became something "More," which led them to construct the mass relays and begin the cycle. Who they were or where they came from became irrelevent, because they made themselves.

The Quarians.

The Reapers are actually just Geth who time travelled into the past and upgraded themselves.

Yeah, definateley (sarcasm). I think that the sci-fi community has had enough time travel stuff. You know, unless you want to incorporate the Borg into the Mass Effect Universe as well.

I don't think the reapers were created as reapers. They probably started out a some sore of robot workers who became self aware and rebelled. Their creators were probably just some random race who was overthrown by their creations, not unlike the quarians. Their creators are probably the first "assimilated" race, and the reapers have, over millions of years, artificially evolved themselves into these city sized organic/mechanical beings they are now, by this point using the entire galaxy as their plaything.

Just my opinion though. I like the idea of humble beginnings.

I have a wild theory about the Reapers were originally two races, One host race and one parasitic mind controlling race.

Over time they co-evolved and the host race became more and more cybernetic until they finally evolved into the huge Reaper shells(the cephalopod looking behemoths) and the parasite evolved into the core (Larvae).

And the two now one (no beginning nor end) becomes the great parasites of the galaxy every 50.000 years.

Ah yes, "Reapers."

We have dismissed that claim

We have no beginning. We have no end. We simply are

I thought this as well, that the reapers are they're creators.
Maybe each reaper is the sum of all of the minds of a particular civilization. Maybe before you are liquified you're mind becomes one with the rest of the species.

The reapers obviously think they are doing humanity a favor, saying things like "prepare these humans for their perfection", and "you challenge you're own ascension", and "we are you're salvation through destruction".

Basically what if a civilizaton turned themselves into robots, each a program like the geth, but took it further and all joined into giant machines.

I agree with your theory as well
In a way it reminds me of this wiki/Necron
Creatures who were once organic that downloaded their sentience into machines or consolidated their sentience into each Reaper vessel.

I'm not an atheist myself, but the existence of something does not logically necessitate the existence of something before it.

that's my thoughts on them too. sovereign/nazara wasn't very descriptive in ME1, but he didn't want shepard to know anyways. it's like legion: thousands of programs on a platform, the individual species absorbed are like the programs and the reaper shell is the platform. sovereign had an awesome voice though...

What about why they need species-slushy to reproduce?

Perhaps somewhere in the early reaper days they found a "peak limit" to logical tech advancement and discovered that only natural biological evolution can provide the randomness required for continued genetic diversity? I tend to think they started as pure machines.

I like the dying race and co-evolution theories as well. Fun topic. :)
