edit: anything that affects shields/barrier/armour just boosts whatever the player has. so vanguard/adept get more barrier, the rest get more shields. bear in mind enemy abilities are effective against the same things that your abilities are(so warp hurts your barrier, overload your shield) . also, grunt is the only friendly with armour, making him an even better tank because nearly all enemy weapons are automatic (gd vs barrier/shield). off topic, but in case you didnt know and wanted more understanding.

what do you call the ability to absorb 20% extra dmg, a hindrance?
edit: sorry, you're right, got my upgrades confused, geth shield strength only affects squaddies, if i have located my brain.

The in-game text only refers to shields. As a vanguard I don't have shields, so my question was valid? And of course I would like an answer handed to me, why else would I post on the boards? Go be an internet tuff guy somewhere else, and let there be discussion. thanks

Yeah, I knew all of that haha. I'm on my fourth playthrough right now, I've spent far too much time on this game
and yes, geth shield strength does actually only affect squad members. It was just the first thing that popped into my mind besides hard shields. The whole aspect is a little confusing, though. If you look at the description for charge, it says that the SHIELD recharge is 100% of your max SHIELDS. It only makes sense for that to be zero, and yet your barrier recharges anyways... It just seems like a fallacy on Bioware's part really. I've always just gone ahead and bought them in previous playthroughs, but I've never gotten down to thinking about it in this way before. Thanks for the info though, nice to know that I'm not gimped for not having shields, technically!

But anyways, when they say shields, they mean shields, barriers and armor.

The game is a bit inconsistent when it comes to it's terminology. Whenever you hear mentions of 'shields' with regardsto powers or upgrades, it means anything that stops your health from getting damaged.
The sole exception is the Geth upgrade, but it specifically mentions it only affects geth shielding.

Has anyone found the answer to this question? Who exactly benefits from the "geth shield boost 1 & 2" upgrades? Tali, Legion, the whole crew or shepard?
Geth Shield Research upgrades only affect Legion. It's called "Geth Shield Research" for a reason. It's the same way "Krogan Vitality" only works for Grunt.
