How did Ashley/Kaiden escape the collectors on Horizon?  They were the first to be attacked and frozen by the swarm.  The effects don't just wear off because you encounter several frozen humans during the quest.

Well, everyone was attacked by the swarm. It is assumed that Kaidan is one of the few that don't get collecte din time by the time you arrive and start shooting up the place.

Also, Kaidan/Ash got frozen 1st. Other colonists ran away, so they were in a different area, I guess?

Who knows. It's just one of those things where they didn't get taken because the devs didn't want them to be. Which guarantees they'll be around in ME3, so I'm happy.

it's just an unexplained plothole, plain and simple in how the "mystery of it" is the only excuse present.

Exactly.

Judging by the humans left standing in random places, and the ones stuck in pods in a similar manner, the Collectors seemed to have chosen people to take at random.

...At least, that's what it looked like to me. I guess it could explain why Kaiden/Ashley wasn't taken.

They were just part of the lucky half of the colony that was not loaded onto the Collector ship before Commander Shepard drove them off.

I assumed it was because Kaidan/Ashley managed to rip off the buggy. Perhaps they didn't get a strong enough dose, so it wore off quicker for them?

The problem is that the woman standing right next to them (tries to run, but couldn't have gotten more than ten feet away) is taken by the Collectors (if you play with subtitles on and save your crew, Lilith is the one that gets goop'd instead of Kelly inside the Collector Base). How did the Collectors manage to miss the person they came to Horizon for, but take everyone standing right next to them?

yeah it's weird, my first playthrough i genuinely thought Kaidan was some weird Collector mirage, and Shepard had lost the fight against the scions, etc and had been frozen like the colonists, but was sort of tranquilized in a dream haze due to the process and thought s/he had won, then we get a rescue scene, Shep wakes up, unfreezes, the entire colony is gone and the story continues.

Instead he gave her a hug, got annoyed and buggered off and I was like, huh.

It was an odd moment.

I'm with you on this one. I can't really make any sense of it either. Especially when you get a before and after conversation with TIM that points out that you both assume the Collectors went to Horizon because of the presence of Ash/Kaiden. I know that the devs wanted to stage this reunion scene, but I don't understand why they didn't even attempt to explain how he/she managed to get free. Huh?!?
