Possible (moreso probably) fix to disappearing party members, grouped up at camp, and more!

After much troubleshooting I've come to discover a possible fix - first and foremost - ensure you have a save file from BEFORE YOU PATCHED THE GAME. Otherwise, you might be out of luck! Also if you're using any DLC - you'll have to uninstall that as well!

Basically, if you've installed the toolset or if you installed patch 1.01a, you'll find that your companions have started talking to you as if you've just met. Some cutscenes don't play, some conversations end adruptly, and your party remains grouped with you even when you're in camp! And if you try to remove them from the group, they disappear permanently! My own personal experience through hours of troubleshooting this morning yielded significant results - variables have been reset, global properties have been bugged and overrode with numbers and condition checks that cause a total obstruction in most key areas of the game.

The demo campaign I was building in the toolset was called "Rescue the Princess". I tried a fresh install without removing the toolset - attempted to play my game file (BFB_032) and it said, "Requires specific content - Shale, Fortress, blahblah, AND" - but STOP - it also it the save file required "Rescue the Princess". I thought, "Hmm... Toolset problem! " I tried to start a new game, the Human noble, although male, was referred to as female, characters didn't have nameplates - they were named after their uid's. (what us NWN/1/2 modders call ResRefs & Tags) From here it finally dawned on me - I was going to have to play a save game file from BEFORE I patched. (BFB_029, luckily)

Now - during my 2nd troubleshooting session I didn't uninstall the toolset, but - the toolset caused dialogue to be removed, voice-overs to be GONE, and names to be replaced with uid's. Again, different problem - same issue - SO 3rd troubleshooting session:

I've uninstalled the entire game, toolset included, backed up all of my saves, and literally removed everything - EVERYTHING that has to do with Dragon Age, including the 2005 SQL Database and Packaging Software from the toolset installation, which suprisingly took a lot of time to remove! Now I have a fresh v1.00 install, DLC content is downloaded and installed, no Toolset downloaded AT ALL . Start the game, login, download any DLC that is required from your last salvageable (pre-patch 1.01a) save file and hopefully you didn't lose much progress!

In terms of the buggy databases, screwy patch, conflicting toolset issues - Let them work it out guys - I blame builders like myself that cried foul and rushed the devs to release it, regrettably. Hopefully this helps some of you. I know renaming the override folder has only helped a few, but it's only a temporary fix as there are countless variables and such that were reset or maybe even erased! Hell in one of my older save files (patch 1.00 WITH toolset) I gave Morrigan her mothers grimoire and didn't get anything but a "+1", so I'm certain it HAS to be both the patch and the toolset!

I wish you all luck and best regards!

-BFB

*Update* : Just checked it out from my last Pre-patch/pre-toolset save game - YES - everything is as it should be.

Ouch, this is going to hurt - I've done quite a lot since I patched.

The problem for me started after I was playing around with the toolset, much as you described. The patch itself didn't seem to have any impact. I'm going to try some things based on what you did and see what happens. Thanks for posting!

Is it the toolset that causes this?
Because I've got the patch but not the toolset.

It is definitely the toolset. I backed up my character folder (with the saved games in it) then uninstalled the toolset and the game. I then reinstalled the game and re-patched and re-downloaded the Stone Prisoner, etc. I can load a saved game from before I installed the toolset and everything works fine. Any saved game from after that time says it is missing resources (and lists two test modules I had created). If I force one of those to load then I still have the problem with the characters as described by the OP.

I'm wondering if there is a way to unassociate the main campaign from those modules, perhaps by using the toolset. The question is do I spend my time reinstalling the toolset and trying to figure out how to do that, or spend the time recovering the in-game progress I lost...

I only lost about 20 minutes worth of progress, and it was even less so since at that point I knew where to go and what to do. Sorry to hear you lost a bit of progress. :( Good luck man.

The toolset screwed up my game but the patch did not.

Does anyone have the Toolset installed WITHOUT it destroying gameplay?
