So, I finally decided I needed to romance someone besides Alistair, so I'm making a City Elf and romancing Zevran. Thing is, I don't want to break up with Alistair or turn him down cruely or whatever. Is there any way to just never intiate romance. I must confess I don't know how, lol

Hmmm.... I think the only way Alistair won't fall for a female warden is if he dislikes/disrespects her, I'm afraid.

Just turn him down early, he doesn't seem all that sad if you do it early.

Alright, no flirting. This is going to be a long game :(

Does he bring up romance at all if you don't flirt with him? I don't think I'll be able to turn him down if he starts trying to woo me, I am a avid Alistair fangirl lol

My character and Alistair are on completely platonic terms. Simply don't pick the "handsome" dialogue and just let him know that you're not interested. Also, breaking up with him is extremely easy and hardly cruel, considering half the time he doesn't disapprove of it, and will sometimes even approve (yes, seriously). Breaking it off with him straight up generally goes better than breaking it off for someone else during a proposition. And if you haven't noticed, he's actually pretty much relieved to not have to deal with the romance anymore, what with everything going on.

Zevran is hardly a tough cookie, and honestly his romance is much more fulfilling in the end. It takes longer to finish, so don't get upset if it seems to stall early on. Just wait patiently and things will happen in due time.

Yeah, I heard about how long it takes, which is fine by me. The only thing that confuses me is the earring thing, but I won't have to worry about that for a few days.

Alistair is very clingy, you almost have to ignore him completely (as a female character) if you don't want to end up romancing him. Hmm I have had one play through where I was in the high 90's and Friendly with him. I gave him Duncan's Shield, and hey presto he was all over my character like a rash. I dumped him on the spot but I think I ended up with a lower approval than before I had given him the shield. Weird how that sort of thing happens.

Have you had the "where is this going" talk yet? My elven mage talked about her being an elf, said he was going to become king, then said "better now than later" and got a +1 for the conversation. Done right, an Alistair breakup can be a soft landing. He will also give an approval plus if Zevran asks you to choose, you talk to Alistair and he asks you about it, and you respond that you wished you could have told him yourself and that you're sorry.

As for not starting the romance, don't tell him he's handsome, don't tell him you think you're the lucky one because he's with you (in the Redcliffe talk)... let's see... the rose discussion is a difficult one to do without turning the romance on. I haven't been able to accept the rose without doing so, even if my PC tells him she doesn't feel the same way, it seems to be on anyway.

Also, here is the link to ejoslin's Zevran Romance FAQ. It has some advice about the earring, so it may help you. I think she plans to tidy things up more so it's easier to follow, but in the meantime if you have questions everyone in the Zevran thread is aways happy to spout advice at people (we all love hearing ourselves talk =P).

Now, if you really want to avoid an Alistair relationship altogether, you should really try a hate run. He's almost sexier when he's angry. XD

Easiest way to break up with him - have Anora execute him.

Does he give you the rose, even if you've not started the romance previously??

I watched a YouTube video of this scene and, frankly, there's no way in hell I could do that to a fellow Grey Warden, let alone a potential lover, lover or plain old friend.

Anora ... well, she makes my skin crawl for some reason. She's not evil per se, but ... shrewd and calculating. It's almost as if power is her main goal.

Basically, you have two options with the earring.

Either you accept it at first, and accept it as a token of his love for you.

Or basically ask him if he's sure, and tell him to hold on to it for a bit, and he'll come back later, and you can turn it into a proposal.

This is so not true.  Just don't pick any romance starter lines and you're fine.  I've gone through many games having, "Has anyone ever told you how handsome you are," available still at the archdemon.

Just don't flirt, don't tell him he's special, don't tell him he's handsome, and when he flirts, be nice, but get him back on track ("I have other lines to use for you," "Riiiigggghhttt").

Oh, even engagement to a Cousland wont' start up the romance.  You honestly can have Alistair as a best friend as a woman, being nice, talking about lampposts, etc.  What you can't do is flirt.  At all.

Of course not.  The rose signifies him switching to "care." You're in a romance if you get that rose.

Though you can ask him if it's meant as a proposal, if you have ANY doubts that he meant it that way as well, tell him, "That's too much."  It's a proposal *grin*

Edit: But there is at least one dialog choice that will end up with him not offering it again while he's declaring his feelings.  And there is a really stupid way of keeping the romance from never advancing to love.  If you have ANY questions at all, the Zev love thread can help you with that.

Be strong! He is difficult to resist but trust me, the romance with Zevran is so much better. And I swear I did everything you suggest, ejoslin, and he *still* tried to give me his rose. No, damnit, no! I will not endure another public breakup with Mr. I-Love-You-So-Muches.

The game really seems to push the female warden towards a relationship with Alistair.

Hmmm, I never have any problems.  Then again, without Dialog tweaks, I have serious problems with Leliana ninja love.  So Ali can be a ninja-lover too!  That would be disaster for my HNF play throughs!

Edit: I actually think it's because I know the [edit] incredibly sweet [end edit] Alistair romance so well that I recognize all the romance starter lines and can avoid them easily.  They're not always that obvious, though, and unlike Zevran, Alistair doesn't confirm that's what you mean, he just, well, is suddenly interested.

Woops, editing my post now and changing that wording.  Hahahaha, I guess there is still some resentment over my city elf being dumped all those playthroughs ago . . . *grin*  Apologies all around!

Maybe a little overboard on the editing, but all right. ;-) Yeah, I do still sense a bit of resentment. Hehe...
