Not even the biotic classes need biotic abilities. The game's just that easy. Yes, reave and dominate own everything else, but that doesn't mean slam is useless. It is a very useful ability. That's just what's good about the different abilities - each can be effective and fun to use even on insanity.

Reave or dominate could be used for warp explosion.Reave + Warp is devastating.
Why should i use slam?
Husk killer?Shockwave has an area from the start, and after the cooldown upgrade +class talent, the cooldown for it is fast enough.
Why should i use slam?

1. because reave and dominate don't create warp explosions
2. I don't know if reave and dominate insta-kill husks
3. because shockwave doesn't deal as much damage, it can't be used for warp explosions, only the vanguard and adept can have it, and it doesn't incapacitate people for as long as crippling slam does
4. because all of the abilities you mentioned have a longer cooldown

As I said, slam has many uses. It may not be the best power for each individual use, but the virtue is that it has many uses.

I've played around with slam a bit after reading this thread (though not on Insanity, since I suck :P ) - and it really is versatile. Another nice side effect is that it stops charges.

The many uses and the very short cooldown make it a nice power if the rest of your powers work pretty well already. It allows you to stop enemy attacks, can combo with warp, can sometimes knock people off ledges (if they're close to the edge), is a semi-decent spot-crowd control (because that enemy is just *out* for the next couple of seconds) and can be used very often or as opener before you use another power.

So, it is decent enough, I think (with the caveat that it's a lot more useful on lower difficulties, as almost all biotics).

Slam is nice, but I prefer tier 3 pull and tier 1 barrier over it. Tier 3 pull lasts pretty much as long as crippling slam and tier 1 barrier gives you a cheap shield boost when you can't charge. If only there were an area slam.

Agreed.

Heh, area slam. Instead of ramming multiple people on ground, it slams their heads together. Waster potential bioware! ^_^

Wrong.

2. I don't know if reave and dominate insta-kill husks

Dominate do it,group domiante more then one,and the best,on the fire husk,it kills the whole group.

3. because shockwave doesn't deal as much damage, it can't be used for warp explosions, only the vanguard and adept can have it, and it doesn't incapacitate people for as long as crippling slam does

It throws them some meters away.I didnt notice any big damage from slam anyway.Nothing that could compete with warp or reave.

4. because all of the abilities you mentioned have a longer cooldown

It doesnt matter.First, they have all an area version,so more then one target is affected.
Shockwave has an area from the start.
Second, with the biotic upgrade and the right class passive, the cooldown is fast enough for all situations.

tonnactus, you asked why you should use slam rather than reave or dominate. Since this is a single player game, a lot depends on preference; I'm not answering in terms of which ability is objectively better, but in terms of whether it can be used efficiently. I've already agreed that slam isn't the best ability for each individual use it has. You don't need to convince me. Since Slam can be used efficiently on Insanity thanks to its many uses and short cooldown, and it's available to all classes unlike shockwave, pull and warp, it is not a useless power.

[/thread]

No wait, you are wrong about warp explosions: "To detonate Warp on a target, it must be affected by Singularity, Pull, or Crush (during its lift duration only)." Mass Effect 2 Gameplay Data. By "Crush" Eric refers to Slam.

I LOVE slam. My soldier fem shep uses this one talent all the time. When I was doing the Kasumi DLC, I would crouch behind a barrier, target an Eclipse guy, then slam them. While they were floating I'd target another and Slam. The fast cool down allowed me to keep two or three of these guys floating in the air while Kasumi picked them off.

My first character ever in Mass Effect was and is a soilder.  I tranferred her to ME2 and bought the advanced power.  SInce I had never played the game before, I wanted to play something that was fairly simple.  This way I could learn the basic game mechanics and strategy.  My fundamental strategy is to use the assault rifle to lay down fire while my team specialists do their thing.  However, with the Kasumi DLC all I had was Kasumi.  She needs to get in close to be affective (at least that's my take on it).  Since the Eclipse were using cover fairly effectively, my fundamental strategy would not work as well as it did in the past.  So, I improvised.  Plus shooting things is immensley satisfying! :)

I have to say I really like Slam. With cooldown of about 2 seconds it's handy and amusing, and it keeps them where they are instead of pinging them away like some CC, setting them up nicely for melee or squad kills.

I'll have to try that when I get back home in a few days. Alternatively you could post video evidence

on 360 i have never been able to get a warp explosion with reave or dominate, it requires the enemy(ies) to be rag dolled before they can get the explosion
