OK, so let me get this straight. It appears that an awful lot of you guys are playing ME2 from the HDD. Before I continue on to my core question, is it REALLY worth it to install the game on your HDD and play it from it? How much am I missing by NOT installing it and simply running it off the disk? I have tried playing ME1 from my HDD once, and I have to say it really didn't improve a lot. Texture reloading was still there; it only took a shorter amount of time for the textures to fully reload. I also noticed that the random lag ME1 would have sometimes was essentially gone, but that's about it. I didn't really notice much else.

Anyway, now to the point. I currently have the standard 20GB hard drive. I am thinking of upgrading to a larger hard drive for the main reason of installing ME 2 when I finally get my hands on it (yes, you read that correctly, I haven't played ME 2 yet.) But seeing as how all my ME1 work is on my current 20GB hard drive, I am not sure how I would transfer all that to the new hard drive. I'm especiallly talking about those "hidden" saves you get once you complete the game. Will using a transfer kit properly transfer those hidden saves to the new hard drive or not? Because if not, then I'm not sure how I would be able to import my characters and continue on with ME2 on the new hard drive.

That's all. Please try to avoid any speculation of any kind. Statements like "you should be fine," or "a friend of mine did it and said it worked," or "I think it may work" or anything along those lines willl simply be ignored. So unless you've tried that YOURSELF and it did in fact work for you, I respectfully ask you not to bother posting. Sorry, but I really cannot afford any mistakes.

Thanks in advance. But before answering my main question, just tell me if it's really worth installing the game to the HDD in the first place. I'm going to be playing ME 2 real soon and I need to make my decision regarding the whole hard drive thing as quick as possible.

The transfer kit copies over all data from your previous hard drive to the new one. This includes the "hidden" save files, since they are in the data path associated with your gamertag.

EDIT:  It actually transfers everything from your old drive to the new one & then wipes the old drive after the content is moved, so the process is one way & one time only.

I upgraded from the 20GB to the 120GB with my regular XBOX360, & then moved everything over to the 250GB hard drive when I got the MW2 console as a Christmas gift.

You will still have to swap discs out of the system when the game calls for it, even when installed on the HDD.

The biggest thing about installing to the HDD is that it loads some things a little faster & also keeps the DVD drive from constantly spinning. So it reduces noise & heat from the XBOX & saves some wear & tear on the game discs.

Thank you for your thoughtful response, dilmonen. I have one more but stupid question: If installed on the HDD, does inserting a game into the console and letting it load up by itself mean it's running off the disk or from the HDD? In other words, do I have to manually go to the Play From Hard Drive option every time I insert an installed disk to run it off the HDD or does simply booting it up automatically run it off the HDD as long as it's installed on there?

I hope this is clear enough.

Once the game is installed to the HDD it automatically runs it from the HDD going forward. It only spins up the game disc to validate that you own it. After that, everything reads from the HDD. You do have to leave the game disc in the drive though, as ejecting it will put you back to the dashboard/NXE.

Glad to hear it. I know I have to keep the disk in the drive; I mentioned in my original post that I played a full ME1 playthrough with the game disk installed. I was just never sure whether normally booting it up actually meant it was running from the HDD. Thanks to you, now I know it does. :)
