...to actually selecting a previous one once you get an upgrade?
like say the original rifle vs the 1st upgraded one you get
or the original pistol vs the hand canon
etc...
Weapon upgrades? Is there a point?

Well the "upgrades" you're talking about are actually "new" weapons. Some are ugrades, others are kinda different (shotguns come to mind, with different rates of fire and ammo capacity).

Each weapon has it's pros and cons, perfect example is the Revent (spelling)
Massive damage, good ammo but poor accuracy. Where the Vindicator rifle (spelling) but good damage, fantastic accuracy but little ammo. Each weapon is diffrent while in ME there was just stat difference, each weapon plays differently.

Weapons behave differently. More damage, less speed, different firing method etc.

Yeah, I really liked this system.
The weapons are really different one to another, and the upgrade system (the tech lab upgrades) were really well made.
Better than the typical: "there is a weapon that's better in any other way to the previous one you had" of almost every other game. The Vindicator rulz.

Agreed. I much prefer this to constantly upgrading the same exact (although different colored!) 1-10 series of weapons from ME1. I think we could use a pistol in between the Predator and the Carnifex, but everything else is damn near perfect.

They all look different, feel different and do different things.
Basically, yes there is a point

The new system needs work, they descriptions do not provide enough detail. And often fail to follow their own internal logic. For instance the second weapon you get always says it is an improved version of the first weapon, when in fact it is just a differnt weapon with differnt specifications.
They really need to provide at least a basic info sheet for comparison.
Rate of Fire
Clip Size and Ammo capacity
Newtons! everything else is measured in newtons, why not.
Mass, knowing the Newtons and Mass of a projectile you can identify the acceleration so...
Muzzel velocity
Of course then they might have to put some thought as to why rapid fire weapons are more effective against kinetic shields and barriers than other wepaons (except the shotgun which apparently can be upgraded to be effective agains those targets).
