Has anyone read Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke?
What the Reapers are doing could be a much more violent means of what the Overlords do, come to think of it.

I just wanted to say I've read that book and  you might be on to something!

Necros are the norm on the ME boards it seems.

I don't want an anti-spiral race. The "we thought they were bad guys but they were actually protecting us" bit has been done way too much of late.

Good/Evil is all a matter of perspective.

If this series played from the point of the Reapers then they would be the good guys.

Since they are not, then they are the bad guys.

This is my opinion in a nutshell.  I believe it was Obi-Wan Kenobi, if memory serves, that said something to the effect that good and evil were all a matter of perspective.  From the Jedi perspective, the Sith are evil.  From the Sith Perspective, the Jedi are evil.  (Or at least from Anakin's perspective anyway.) Which, also makes me think of the old addage of "Truth is in the eye of the beholder".

While I don't think the Reapers are "good guys", I also don't think they are (entirely) "bad guys" either.  I think that they do have some sort of motive that they believe makes their actions justified.  But due to organic life's skewed perception of "good vs evil" they don't bother even explaining their intentions because, as Sovereign said, it is beyond our comprehension (spellcheck? lol)

While I dont agree with the Reaper's methods, I do think that they are attempting to "save us through destruction" as Harbinger put it more or less.  The pending question really, is what precisely are they saving us from? Ourselves? The proverbial "Apocalypse?" Only the Reapers know their intentions and due to most of galactic life's inability to see in shades of true grey, in terms of good vs evil, we'll never know because of that.

Again, Im not pro-Reaper agenda.  To me, to use yet another quote, this time from Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 1; My Shepard and the Reapers, are "Just two soldiers on opposite sides of the field."  Given, Shep and the Reapers could never have the kind of "friendship", or any friendship for that matter, that Snake and Yeager had but the principle is the same I think.  Just two "soldiers" on opposite sides of the field fighting for what they think is the right thing to do.

This is why I keep my perception of "truth" open.  "Truth" really is a relative term.  Every person, every faction, every country, every culture, has their own perception and translation of "Truth".  There is no such thing, in most cases, as one unviversal truth.  What it boils down to I think is this:

The Reapers have an agenda.  In a nutshell, it's "Salvation through destruction".  And because of the last word in that "agenda", organic life will fight against them regardless of what else is implied by said agenda.  Which, we can't truly be faulted for.  After all, it's a basic primal instinct to want to preserve one's "Existance".  And I use quotes on the word existance because to a race of sentient machines such as the Reapers, that term really is kind of transitory when used by an organic race.

Its more like whether or not Lukes father was dead is a matter of perspective. IE once he's no longer Anakin Skywalker he is "dead" even though he and Darth Vader are the same person.

You have to go into religion for comparative I think. IE "God" has killed billions of people over the years but very few people see him as "evil".

I thought about going into religion for my comparison but with me being the kind of person I am, I can't delve into a concept like religion without stepping on some people's toes Posted Image

I just keep it general stick to concepts rather than specific deities. The idea of Reapers as "good" would have been interesting if they popped up in chapter2, but with ME3 being the final Shepard chapter really hard to see how it would go from there.

I think everyone wants some sort of clousure in ME3 like at the end of LOTR or SW. Even though the trilogy is not the end  it is the conclusion of an "age".

It's all a matter of what side you're on as to weather so and so is good or bad. For instance in the civil war the north sent some troops to burn and pillage its way through a large portion of the south.

Well if you were the north you thought good finally we're showing some action and giving them hell aka good. But if you're the south and you're the ones being burned and pillaged it would be those damn northerners we need to get them back aka bad. A person or group can be both at the same time the reapers see themselves as good we who are on the end of their punishment see them as bad.

I hope not. Now, see, I wouldn't mind seeing it explained that the Reapers have some reason for doing what they do - wiping out old races to give new ones a chance to pop up, for example. Or maybe as a way to impose their own idea of "perfection" upon others. Or maybe simple fear; the fear that despite being "perfect" and "invicible" there will someday come a race that will possess the capability to actually destroy them and they're working to prevent this...
But making'em good guys? Nah, thanks.

Hmm? If you don't like it, then simply don't answer  Posted Image

And, well, we all do stupid things Posted Image . But in my defense, it isn't THAT old a thread (seven days since the last answer) and I wanted to say my piece. If you don't like it, just leave it at that.
