Based on your squadmates' uses in the final mission, I've come to the conclusion that Thane is the one squadmate that has NO actual use in the suicide mission. I'll back up my claim with proof!

Tech: Legion and Tali successfully accomplish this task.

2nd Team Leader/Distraction Team Leader: Garrus/Miranda/Jacob are the way to go for these positions.

Biotic Barrier: Samara/Morinth/Jack successfully lead you through with a strong enough barrier to keep your people from dieing.

Holding The Line: Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed provide the most "points" contributing to your "line" score that is used to decide if your people live or die if you leave them holding the line.

Now the only squadmates that have no real use in the final mission are Thane and Mordin, but Mordin allows you to get upgrade and plays a role in the main plotline (Providing a defense against the seeker swarms on Horizon).

So it seems Thane has no real use overall in the squad during the final mission, making him useless.

Though I noticed, through many playthroughs, Thane is the default "radio guy" when you call back on the Line Team to see how they are doing.

Anyone find a role in the suicide mission Thane can successfully fill? Or is he the most useless squadmate?

*EDIT* In my haste while typing this thread, I seem to have implied I find him useless in all things. I am not doubting his role in a combat squad with Shep, just his use to the team in the suicide mission.Posted Image

Yeah there is not one situation other than maybe having him in your party where he is useful.

Plus during that mission Mordin is the one you should send as the escort so yeah.

*Also now I see why Mordin died on my second playthrough,  Zaeed died as second squad leader and I had Garrus and Mirand in my party with Jacob as escort.  Fudge.

I find, while playing an adept or sentinal so I can use biotics as well, Garrus and Legion fill Thane's role in a combat squad more effectively, but that's just me.

Hmm...

Morinth + Thane alone in door defence... Both live

Morinth + Mordin alone in door defence... Only Morinth lives

I think that says a lot about your 'useless' topic

He's very good at combat, just not one of the roles you need to assign during the suicide mission. Not to mention he's one very interesting character if you go through his dialogue.

Thane and Mordin both are useless in the suicide mission. They are liabilities to bring along.

Send one of them back and bring the other with you. There you go.

You can take Thane on missions?? I thought he was too preoccupied reliving his best moments. Hmm, how's that for a depression for that race. Get stuck reliving your best memories or your worst nightmares over and over.

Yes, Mordin is the worst person to use at the Holding the Line portion in the mission, but he does play a role in the development of the plotline as he creates the anti-seeker stuff for Horizon, and allows you to get upgrades, Thane just provides combat abilities that can be replaced by other members (Garrus, Legion), and a romance option for FemShep.

I always have him and Miranda in the squad for every part of the suicide mission, since they both have warp. So, def. not useless!

My femShep would argue that he is not useless. Not useless at all. Indeed, he serves a very important use for her.

The "Hold the Line" reasoning is a bit of a stretch. While Grunt and Zaeed are referenced has being good for the job due to the stats they contribute to the defense check, that doesn't mean they have the highest. The article you're referencing is simply giving examples, making it an invalid point to use. Thane contributes to this stat, and unless you have concrete data on just how much, you can't really associate this with his "uselessness."

Though, seeing as he is the one who communicates with you during the "hold the line" sequence, it's safe to assume that he is, at the very least, not low on the defensive skill check.

Zaeed is also a good replacement for Thane, although he doesn't have biotics Concussive Shot is pretty good against barriers and un-armored collectors, and inferno grenade is very good against armor and enemies who stand close to each other.

I didn't say Thane sucked at Holding The Line, he might in fact provide something to it, but it's obvious Zaeed, Grunt, and Garrus contribute the most out of the squadmates.

What about Jack? Shes pretty useless in my opinion, i think i used her once in the suicide mission and i had to bring along Samara just so they could do a succesful Pull+Throw combo.

Also I personally find Thane and Mordin two of the best characters in the game I just never found much of use for them in the actual gameplay though. (Especially in Thane's loyalty mission where you just follow that guy).

Other than being a tragic-romantic-interest kinda guy, I can't really say... other than his loyalty mission... I... erm... never used him.

Again, Grunt and Zaeed provide a lot of points at the Hold The Line portion of the suicide mission, Thane does not.
