So I have finally created a female to explore the romance option with Alistair, but I am torn about which characters I want to have tag along on the journey.
Normally I always run with Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan. This time I am thinking about running with Halador (Dog), and Alistair (for the romance part), but then I have to decide do I want Leliana for chests, damage, and talk about the Maker, or Morrigan for damage, negativity and bluntness.
Decisions, decisions.
How do you all choose wen you play a new character?
Also I have always wondered this, but is it possible to still do the romance angle fi you never have the person in teh party because if thats possible then I can just leave Alistair at the camp and just take who I want and chat him up when I am in the camp (which is fairly often).
Party members...

Choosing companions, l go bye my characters outlook and beliefs.
And yes, you can have your way with people even if you dont travel with em......diamonds are a girls best friend after all...or a runestone...etc etc

First consideration for me is what kind of character will I create. Next then is to make up a balanced team around my main char choice as I like variety in my group, so I like a mage, a rogue (non-archer) and a tank. 4th member can be most anyone. Next I like some conflict in my squad, so Morrigan and Alistair are good. Oghren and Wynn is good. Sten and anyone is good
Also I tend to stick with a core group for most of the game, so when considering my next play through I usually will want to use someone who I've not used much yet, for example Shale and Zev. I will get them next probably in my next play though.
I'm sure you will think of good names for yourself!

I've gone with a human noble female and she's pretty much all about the Maker so she is basically a goody goody. I was going to go the angle of having Dog because my girl loves her Dog and I kind of based her off my girl, at least in appearance and certain traits. If I can still get the romance option with Alistair without having to team with him then that will be good and should allow me to change him out for Shale this time,
In 4 playthroughs (3 complete) I have gone with Morrigan, Alistair and Leliana each time although on my last playthrough I was able to use Shale and Oghren enough to do their origin story before beating the game.

You don't have to take the same party members with you everywhere you go. If you happen to like some more that others, take them with you on the main quests and you can shuffle the other ones for the side-quests. I found that this is a good way to enjoy the party banter and experiment with different class combinations.

Good to know. I had always been curious if it was like Mass Effect one where you had to keep certain characters with you to get the achievement. I always figured the romance angle was triggered by interest and keeping them with you during the quests. If thats not the case then that gives me a lot of options for party customizing.

you can always run through each completed area with leliana to pick up loot if you don't want to take her for battle

It boils down to how much of a git I-being-my-PC expects to be during the next trip. The more of a scumbag my PC plans on being, the more likely the goody two shoes companions are to be left in camp.
For example, on the quest where you have to use blood magic to destroy every pair of dainty shoes in order to end alchohol production for all time, you really don't want to bring Leliana, Alistair, Wynne or Oghren along.

I think I will probably run with Leliana, Shale, and Dog and swap Morrigan and Alistair out randomly.
