If done well, sure. Reading the extensive codex entries on ships and space combat, one gets the impression that history is rarely decided by a three man squad on the ground.

As long as it doesn't turn into an R-Type Shooter game.. I am fine.

That's not the kind of game Mass Effect is though...

Nah not really. Most of the time you add elements like this into a game that's a completely different genre, it just turns into a minigame.

Maybe, maybe, some millenium falcon-style gunner missions, but 3rd person flight duels would suck in most instances. Maybe if you've hijacked a fighter, but definitely no Normandy; that's Jokers deal. And if he's incapacitated maybe you stear it out of a fight.

Maybe

Didn't Jade Empire have a shooter minigame. A la 194x series? Oh god.. I am imagining the same for Mass Effect now.

Nah. If I want space battles then I would play Homeworld or Sins of Solar Empire.

If it means I get to play as Wrex flying on a rachni queen and headbutting reapers to death...

Yes.

the way ship combat is described it would/should play more like a submarine game then any space-battle type game we've played in the past.

and turrets? um..no...ships have a point defense system..this isn't goddamn kotor.....do some ****ing reading before you fart out an idea.

Not really... but a Freespace 2-like spinoff of some big military campaign would be nice. I really have to replay that game...

Maybe as a completely seperate ME universe game...but not as part of the ME trilogy.

You could give a series of orders to Joker from the ground, and then watch a cutscene wherein the Normandy either kicks butt or gets stomped on.

only if you are making decisions for the fight, kind of like an extended version of the omega-4 relay cut scene.

For example: close and use gun batteries, vs. keeping your distance and using high yield missiles. Targeting a ships bridge, engines, or mass effect core. all choices having both renegade/paragon points and story based repercussions.

Only if we get to hear Joker yell, "Do a barrel roll!"

I would not mind a NEW game that was all about playable space battles and set in the ME universe. However, I am against any elaborate mini-games or gimmicks that are different from what ME is, an RPG with FPS gameplay.

I stopped buying GTA games when they started introducing plots that required flying airplanes with convoluted controls. I would hate the same to be true for ME3.

Well heard of it is still better than nothing. Anyways, nice avatar pic.

But as to the OP. Yeah, a well done one might seem cool. But what would be a well done one? ME is a dialogue RP and fist person (more like over the shoulder) shooter game. Having the space battle as some sort of minigame would just be... well Jade Empire again with the flying dragonfly thing. It won't add to the game and any space battle will have to be epic and important, so.. FMV cinematics like in ME1/2 did it
