Rokushi: Exactly. Though its not a perfect example, look at the Sims (2, 3 has some issues) for an example of well implemented expansion packs, (at least in principle, I in no way endorse the concept of making 50,000 micro expansion packs of things that should have been in the base game and probably were hidden in the coding.)
Each one blends seamlessly (for the most part) into the base game, rather than going off on a tangent. In this sense, Awakenings is more Dragon Age 1.5 than an expansion pack.
Had bioware followed this model, Awakenings would have started as DAO would normally end, likely with a change to the epilogue in a way that facilitates the jump into the EP content. I can accept loosing most of your party (Alistar is either king, imprisoned, dead, or a random drunk, Morrigan leaves no matter what you do, Wynne has hardly any time left to live, and has to put her affairs in order, Shale wanders off, Loghain should be expected to answer for his crimes now that the blight is over) but its conceivable that, if they're alive and around, Sten, Leliana, your dog, Zevran, and maybe Ogrhen would stay. Add 3-5 more companions in the EP content, and you've got a full party.
