^ If you don't hear back from Bioware about certain things it's probably because you won't like the answer.

I remember seeing threads about the "RPG" improvements for ME2 in the ME1 forums and never seeing them discussed by Bioware.(regardless of how you felt about ME2)

Thats fine..I can handle the truth..now all they have to do ..is say it. :P

STILL not happy with the Ultimate Sacrifice thing....and 19 days later ...NOBODY from Bioware has addressed this issue, either to lay it to rest..or to possibly indicate..that the way we are seeing this plot hole..isn't actually whats going to happen.

I would be willing to see it either way..but thus far,   complete and utter silence.

I have a thought: maybe you just have not played the game.

I kinda' skimmed all the reactions (since I'm at work and don't have time to read it all through carefully:P) but I just wanna point out what I think the OP meant and everyone was missing from the beginning seeing the reactions.

He stated "Awakenings is not an expansion pack", I think he means by this that Awakenings doesn't look like an expansion pack, even though it is. An expansion is ought to give us new content and new features, and keeping the NPC's from the original game (except if they left at the end of the original one). In this case NPC's are being removed, as also some features. This is what this thread is about I think :P

Rokushi: Exactly. Though its not a perfect example, look at the Sims (2, 3 has some issues) for an example of well implemented expansion packs, (at least in principle, I in no way endorse the concept of making 50,000 micro expansion packs of things that should have been in the base game and probably were hidden in the coding.)

Each one blends seamlessly (for the most part) into the base game, rather than going off on a tangent. In this sense, Awakenings is more Dragon Age 1.5 than an expansion pack.

Had bioware followed this model, Awakenings would have started as DAO would normally end, likely with a change to the epilogue in a way that facilitates the jump into the EP content. I can accept loosing most of your party (Alistar is either king, imprisoned, dead, or a random drunk, Morrigan leaves no matter what you do, Wynne has hardly any time left to live, and has to put her affairs in order, Shale wanders off, Loghain should be expected to answer for his crimes now that the blight is over) but its conceivable that, if they're alive and around, Sten, Leliana, your dog, Zevran, and maybe Ogrhen would stay. Add 3-5 more companions in the EP content, and you've got a full party.

it's mindbogleing how people don't understand what expansion packs are.

Some of us have a little more experience playing expansions in our lives and are aware that expansions can be many different things and that they aren't all following a certain formula.

This is completely silly. Bio's done expansion packs like this before. Both NWN expansions worked exactly like this -- SoU didn't even let you take your NWN1 OC character into the game unless you wanted a ridiculously easy game. NWN2's SoZ worked the same way as SoU too, though that's an Obsidian design.

I didn't like the majority of Dragon Age Origins companions and it doesn't sound like I'll like most of the new ones. I think it would be interesting to see a return of a certain duelist although you couldn't pay me enough to duel her. I also think it would be interesting to see Arl Eamon's child as a mage in a future DA game.

I'll be happy with cameos from the original party members- minus Morrigan, understandably. One of the things I love about this game is the depth of the world. I look forward to meeting other people whose lives have been changed by the Blight.

I just want to take a moment to stick up for the new companions. I've been playing Awakening (yay me!), and I think you'll find that these new guys are friends you haven't met yet, and will be as memorable as your Origins companions.

I wasn't involved in the creation of the story or their dialog, so I am not saying it from a creator's point of view, but a player's. Of course, I do work for BioWare, so this could be PR spin. But I hope you'll trust me when I say that I really do like the new crew and I think you'll warm to them too.

As long as we get to see all the original Origins companions again at some point in another game or expansion, I don't really care how well I'll like the new ones. But if we don't, then I'll be seriously ticked off. >_>

You do know that references, by definition, are continuity, right?

The real problem is that

A. The expansion spells and abilities (the important gameplay enhancements for an expansion), as far as I know, are only available in awakenings, which leads to B:

B. The expansion will function more like a stand alone game (despite it requiring dragon age origins on the PC to play) than an integrated extension to the game.

C. They should have kept the dog in awakenings. It doesn't need voice acting, and doesn't play any story role, so its acceptable as a variable companion.

Has anyone played Warcraft III, and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne before?

If so, its the same thing.

All the new features and improvements in the expansion weren't usable in the original.

Which makes perfectly good sense in my opinion.

Otherwise, whats the point of an expansion pack?

Reminds me of GTA, honestly. Download The Lost and Damned and you get various new radio stations, guns, vehicles, and improved motorcycle physics that make bikes actually usable. None of this imports back into the main game, which, while a shame, is understandable.

Now, Lost and Damned was only $20, and I bet it's longer too, but that's a whole different issue.

Really? I actually really liked it, full frontal male nudity aside. I thought Johnny was a great character and I really enjoyed a lot of the missions. Anyway, I digress.

They should at least let you keep you love interest.

There is so much potential for going the next step in this regard (what about a marriage or something like that), but Bioware rather throws it all away, what a waste.

I hope there will be at least a good explanation why Leliana or Zevran or whoever you had a romance with that didn'tt run away or was crowned king, isn't with you.

And why is the stupid dwarf in the expansion? Of all the characters the worthless, boring, predictable drunk makes it and the good characters doesn't? Who's idea was that?

Edit: Sorry, I just read about this and it really agitates and disappoints me.

It occurs to me: From what I've been hearing, the level cap has been raised to level 35. We also know that there is only so much content in Awakenings(to many peoples chagrin). I wonder, since it may not be possible to hit the new level cap, will Awakenings itself get DLC and expansion packs?

This is all dependent on the ability to reach the level cap. If you can't without cheats and glitches, it suggests that there may be add-on's to the 'add-on'. In which case, Awakenings is a stand alone game, not an expansion.

Yeah makes me appreciate The Elder Scrolls expansions, takes a lot more effort to include new areas and aspects of the game while keeping the original accessible. Taking the same engine with a couple of new baddies is no big deal, not worth $40.

just wondering, what do you guys think the role of the new companions will be for the whole franchise? are they gonna pull a ME and take whoever's alive from Origins and Awakening into the sequel, IF it is a direct sequel, though that's kinda a big if, and i wonder how it will work for people who doesn't have Awakening. or do you think there will be spinoffs that revolves around a certain companion? and of course there are other possibilities, none of them are positive in my opinion though.

I'm curious about Awakenings, but I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed that the old companions won't be there. I can handwave why they're not there, but from a practical standpoint, I invested a lot of time and effort into getting them to like me, and now they just take off? Jerks.

I really hope that BioWare isn't forced into a position where they have to make it so DA:A is not compatible with DA2.
