I agree, smg is the best for shields. Soldiers dont have it though.

Yeah I know, was just continuing to riff on my reasoning for not being partial to assault rifles on the other classes. The tempest provides pretty high dps while giving you a large enough clip to actually spray and stagger enemies. The GPR and Avenger aren't really upgrades in any significant way other than accuracy (which is better served by the viper any way) and the vindicator is far more potent (AR allows you to stretch the ammo) on soldiers.

Tried comparing the Tempest and the GPR on Tali's loyalty mish for performance against Shields. Close up, the Tempest is better for both Shields and Health. At medium range, its accuracy just goes all to hell unless you pulse it, and if you do, you lose DPS. For spraying at medium range against Shields and Barrier, GPR is actually fairly okay. Not as good as Vindicator if you're a headshot-meister and can pulse effectively to bring up the ROF, but fairly effective and easy to use.
It's definitely good enough to get you through Insanity, at least. Anything beyond that is really just vanity.

I like the GPR - it's one of the few weapons in the Mass Effect series that actually looks, feels and sounds futuristic. Sniper rifles, SMG, AR, Shotgun, and Pistol all feel too contemporary for my Sci-fi tastes.
