Is that not just a little cynical...?Kelmen Wong wrote...
romance is pointless when sex is not involved. period.
I mean Shakespeare never wrote, "if music be the food of love... gi's a shag."

Let's not forget that it's a choice, not a must do thing, which is what makes Bioware so unique to other games. It's great to have that kind of opportunity, and to actually have more than one person to choose from too (especially when Kaidan is your only choice in ME...). You're playing pretend whenever you pick up the controller - why wouldn't you want to throw in a little pretend romance while your at it? Nothing wrong with that.
I like romance in any story because it adds another dimension to the experience, makes it more real, because people do occasionally fall in love. It's only natural under the circumstances that certain people would been drawn to each other, which is why it should be there. Not having the option to romance would take something away from the diversity of the game.
I didn't romance anyone from ME on my second or third playthrough because Kaidan is not Garrus in any facet of the imagination, but I pursued it the first time for curiosities sake and because I'm a romantic...just not overly fond of Kaidan... For the people who enjoy the romance portion of the game it's not pointless, it's fun and it adds something to the experience. It doesn't have to be integral to the plot of the story for me to enjoy it either, although Bioware has made certain romance options more relevant than others...which does irritate me to some extent, especially when those characters happen to be my least favorite of the lot, but such is life.
I got what I wanted ultimately and that's just the icing on my already sweet cake.

I'm going through the romance option with Jack right now and am getting to know more about the character then I did when I did not romance her. The extra dialogue and character development - change in her personality makes it worth it to me. I enjoy combat, missions, new equipment, but I also enjoy the RP portions of the game. It's not all about XP and loot for me. I find it entertaining to learn more about Jack, and being entertained is not pointless to me.

I think there should be some sex in the game without having to have romance. Like that boss Asari on Miranda's loyalty mission for example. Instead of having to kill her, there should be an option to take her to your cabin and give her a good spanking and teach her a lesson.
Uhhhhh....yeahhh...okay.
You can always **** Jack with no romance/relationship if you pick the renegade conversation.

Maybe not. That random asari girl he mentioned deserved what she got.
Shiala could use a good spanking though.

This is a great point. It's obvious that romances are "talked about" on the ship.. If you have ever tried to romance someone else at the same time as Tali you realise this.. Tali basically says to you that its a small ship and people talk. Unless you want to SIMS like actions you have to buy into the fact that they have been going on missions together and have bonded during the entire time the game has been taking place.. The issue here is you have no idea how long the entire mission has taken..Throw_this_away wrote...
I agree that the 5 conversations strings for each LI are rather short... and rushed compared to real life, but so is everything else in the game IMHO. This game is not trying to be realistic, just approximate it.
As I invision it, the crew chats/interacts more than ever shown in game. The game just highlights the high points. Otherwise you would be showering, eating, using the washroom... doing the dishes... and other Sims type activities.

They are optional, so no one has to do them.
But I do wonder why it seems like so many of male-sheps LIs have 'daddy issues'?
Coincindencce?
Or is some story writer making a statement?
Liara - who's my daddy? and did she love me?
Tali - My daddy is distant and has no time or love for me.
Miranda - I was my daddy's prize possession, then he created another.
Jack - well, the jury is out. She might have parent issues period. No loving role models in her life.
Ashley - Why do I feel that she wore the pants? She at least had a daddy and she loved him.
Kelly - hmmm... well we don't know ... yet. Stripping to pay for college, when she was 'hand picked' by T.I.M.? Not sure we can say she has daddy issues though.
I'm just wondering.
To be fair...
Jacob has 'daddy' issues as well.
Garrus has daddy issues.
Thane has parenting issues.
So it could be that Kelly is the only 'well adjusted' one.

Personally I think the romances add a nice flavor to an already awesome game.

Secondly, I think the reason so many people feel strongly about the Tali romance is that it is developed well over 2 games. You save her early in ME1 and have interaction with her the entire game. Then in ME2, she is one of the first squadmates you interact with. You basically have 3 missions that feature her in ME2 alone.
Whether you love or hate the romance, I think it's an important part of the game. IMO.
