I've noticed when you choose the voice (and the character talks) the teeth you see look terrible. They are brown and dirty. Don't know if this is intended by the devs.

Another issue:

Is there a folder where the characters you created are saved. Because my good PC is in my apartment and has no internet connection. The one I'm typing this on only hits the lowest system requirements so I'm not able to upload a Avatar I've created with the editor (,because the graphics look so bad that I don't know how if the character looks like I wanted him to look). It would be nice if I could upload my character from the other PC.

They don't have toothpaste in medieval times.

The characters should be saved in '(My) Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Pre-release Characters'.

I haven't noticed any teeth issues, but I'd rather they not have the teeth of young actors today anyway. Like JediMB said, it's more realistic for them to be only mildly well kept.

Although, if you really want realism, most of the PCs and anyone that goes into battle enough should have lost some teeth, too.

They are quite brown though.

I think they should link the quality of the teeth to the origin. Human and Dwarf nobles would probably have the best teeth, mages and dalish elves something in between and dwarf commoners and city elves could have the bad teeth we see right now in the editor.

There was no toothpaste indeed, but something of a dentist did exist back then I believe, which the wealthy could afford. That and regular bathing. and clean water to wash their mouth of course.

That and they didn't have things like soda or processed choclate bars. I happen to think that if it wasn't for those, people wouldn't be seeing the dentist nearly as often.

I was actually discussing this with someone earlier, and we came to the conclusion that an herbalist could probably use things such as peppermint leaves to clean their teeth. :wizard: So it would not be out of context to have some characters with clean teeth available..

:bandit: I'll just quote her:

PirateRose wrote...

All peppermint is, is a herb, that by the way is indigenous in Europe and they do have evidence of it's use for medical stuff as far back as 10,000 in England. I don't mean necessarily gum, but if the Mages know how to mix herbs, you'd think someone would make some primitive mouthwash. tooth paste. or a tooth cleaning powder at least.

I mean, they have gaps in history with no mention of anything cleaning peoples teeth, particularly in the dark ages, but I still think that if a mage is skilled with mixing herbs and has read up on ancient mixes, something could be made.

@ Nylia,

that is a good point and makes sense. There must of been at least -some- people who knew how to use the stuff.

Is dragonage the dark ages though? I mean I know it's the "Dragonage" but is that supposed to be equivalent to the dark ages? Seems like it could be. It as a lot of the culture and gloom of those times.

And we still have rather primitive cultures that exist today that have no access to toothbrushes, and when you see them on the National Geographic channel, they tend to have pretty decent teeth, at least compared to the ugly brown ones the DA:O characters get.

I don't think it's that big a deal.

I don't believe it was really the norm for people to have shimmering white teeth in medieval times. In fact, I'm almost certain when I say that, I don't believe there was really an emphasis on dental-cosmetics back then. Teeth were mainly for eating, so long as they didn't protrude through your gums or mouth : p

...Not counting periods (including the European middle ages) in which people staid away from plain water as much as possible because they thought it carried diseases and focused on alcohol for drinking and pouder for cleaning purposes, of course.

I am not at all believing i relive by way of a simulation how the world truly would have been in another reality if possible with scientific precision. Those ugly teeth are just UGLY, and in a game i play for pleasure I HATE to see those ugly teeth, especially in beautiful faces who do not at all reflect a difficult, poor and tiresome lives with no care for hygienics.

I really do hope in the real game those teeth are as they should be in a game for the protagonist

The point of discussion isn't whether they should have shimmering white teeth I don't think, but whether they should be less horrible.

I took a screenshot of the teeth of one of the characters and founda picture of a shimmering white smile, then sampled a 3x3px average to determine the difference, and this is what I got:

Image IPB

One is an off-white, and the other is a brown. There has to be a reasonable middle ground.

It could also have a lot to do with the lighting, I think the conditions they chose to light the character creation screen were not very conducive to getting an accurate idea of coloration.

Yes, I think the CC has some pretty dark lighting, so that could be influencing how the teeth look. Regardless, someone will make a mod to have sparkling white smiles before long, don't you worry.

That should be a very easy mod to make if we have easy access to the textures. There are also teeth controls in the morph editor that comes with the toolset, but I'm not sure if any of the morphs control the texture.

I agree that the teeth shouldnt look flawlessly white, but they also shouldnt be as brown as they are, its a little too much. When all you're eating is whole natural foods and meat, your teeth at most will turn a little yellow or off white, not poop brown for God's sake.

Maybe in the DA world, Bone material and enamel is poop brown in color. Image IPB

Or it's caused by the blight - Maybe there is a quest for whiter teeth. Image IPB

I wonder if it is just a matter of light and shadows. While they definitely look like coffee stained teeth, I am not sure it is exactly as we are able to see it. I could be wrong though.

Lighting for sure. Its all about the texture and whats hitting the bumpmap. [Or normal map in this case I guess.]
