Just look at those teeth Twitchmonkey uploaded

If someone has some extra time they should take the photo on the right, adjust the brightness and color until the skin tone matches the picture on the left. With the teeth adjusted the same amount, I'd be interested to see if they were still pearly white.

Seriously, I think this is just a lighting issue.

I know that realism is great and all, but I don't like realism when it comes to the teeth of my character. It's like limiting the character creator to only make ugly people. It would have been nice to have a slider or something, that dictates the quality of teeth.

Not so sure it is an lighting issue, shots from in-game characters from some of the trailers don't look much better.

Although I do feel this is a nit-pick issue.
While watching the trailers I really had to focus on the mouth to even see the teeth and notice the color.

Maybe thats the thing that puts all origins together: a quest for white teeth.

The problem is that the lip color is overlaid on the teeth. This is clearly a bug/oversight.

I gave it a go, and while I'm not sure this proves much as it's unlikely that extra lighting will evenly illuminate both the skin and teeth, making this edit still produced some rather undesirable results:

They've gone from a dark coffee to a mocha with ideal lighting conditions, but I'm still not sure that's ideal.

Lighting for sure. Its all about the texture and whats hitting the bumpmap. [Or normal map in this case I guess.]

I wouldnt bet on it. Only way to tell is by playign the actual game.

Ok. I volunteer ;)

Anybody play DDO? That one also has the dark creator scene then OMG! when you hit outdoor lighting. I kept creating this paladin that had apparently spent the last two years in a windowless dungeon. To make him look   "right" I had to go for a color that looked outright dark-skinned in the editor... and he's still a little too pale for my tastes.

Yesterday I thought the teeth looked awful, but today it looked normal. I checked again and I noticed, that only elves haven't got white teeth.

According to my game, if anything, humans are worse:

Edit: Also, here's a picture of a human under similar, though admittedly not identical, lighting conditions:

My humans and dwarfs have got perfect white teeth. It's probably a local problem, cause it's different at each computer.

I extracted the corresponding textures via TexMod and added them to one of my albums.
It's clearly a texture-related "issue", although the lighting is worsening it even further.

Lol, I think every char needs a dentist. It's ridiculous, eating natural foods and suchlike has a good effect on cleaning your teeth (ever heard that eating an apple helps clean yor teeth? what if you ate apples all the time? how clean would your teeth be then? certainly not the ugly brown things in DAO). Seriously, those teeth are coffee stained, but where would they get the coffee? i hope bioware didn't make those the real teeth in the game.

Another disturbing line of thought, what if the teeth are fine? In that case it must be the lighting in the character generator which is the problem, in that case, the lighting must be incredibly dark there, in which case when you finally get out of whatever dungeon your character is created in, you'll be as pale a ghost! That's almost just as bad..

God, those textures are the creepiest things I've seen in a while.

I agree that the teeth shouldnt look flawlessly white, but they also shouldnt be as brown as they are, its a little too much. When all you're eating is whole natural foods and meat, your teeth at most will turn a little yellow or off white, not poop brown for God's sake.

Not their (pseudo)medieval counterparts though, eating a lot of bread when the corn was milled with a real stone will completely obliterate your teeth before you turn 30 or 35 unless they are exceptionally resistant (And by obliterate I mean sand them down to the nerve until they start rotting away in your mouth), higher nobles have a certain access to sweets, which means that the 'no soda' argument only applies to commoners, an unbalanced diet can further damage your teeth, so will alcohol consumption unless you balance it out, most of us here consume fluoridated or carbonized water, which also improves dental hygiene even if you never used a toothbrush in your entire live. Not to mention that hygiene in those (nonexistant) times consisted of never ever touching water unless you asolutely had to, the only people who even considered taking a bath every once in a while were peasants, anyone with a little money powdered and scented to try and keep their raging stink under control...

Really, that brown is a little overdone, but a slight yellow would be greatly understating the expected dental hygiene problems

I agree about the whole teeth dilemma. The PC's teeth look like they have been chewing on dirt and chocolate cake at the same time. I wonder if they have dentists in Fereldan? Now that I think about it dentistry must have been a relatively recent thing in the world. Seeing as they have all these fancy gadgets and X-Rays and Microscopes and whatnot... Hmm... I wonder how long it's been around for.

In any case, yes, PC's teeth always look unaturally dirty, like as if they haven't been brushed, EVER. :o

It's a fantasy RPG, i don't want my teeth to look realistic, i want my girl to look good, which means: white teeth!

And for the people who like it realistic: Agreed, they have no toothpaste, but MAGIC, k?

Works for me. ;)
It's not like I expect or want realism from my fantasy games, just wanted to point out a flaw in the argument.
