ME2 Challenges
Challenge: A number of varying rulesets put in place by players. These rulesets can limit certain gameplay aspects from being used through a playthrough, increasing strategy, challenge, and enjoyment.
It's not that Insanity is too 'easy' in ME2, it's that its not insane enough!
Like most rpgs, and especially FF games and Elder Scrolls games, creating our own "challenges" can make the game much more difficult, tactical, and therefore enjoyable for those who want a challenge. Final Fantasy games have a huge history of unique "challenges", mostly because the games tend to be pretty easy. Elder Scrolls games tend to have challenges because it's far too easy to become a jack-of-all-trades.
Basically, by limiting certain things, players assume direct control over the gameplay design. I can already tell that MANY of us are already consciously choosing not to use heavy weapons, and perhaps allowing use for only the final boss. This is an limit that a "challenge" may put in place. Not using heavy weapons for normal mobs forces us to use our abilities and guns, thus increasing our use of tactics and so forth.
Challenges are usually titled with many letters, each of which stand for something. For example, NMLLCO (or something) would stand for "No Materia, Low Level, Cloud Only".
Personally, I've never liked limiting the use of 'fun' things like Material (or magic in other games) because it increases the variety and strategy in the game. However, a more sensible limitation would be "NS" , which stands for No Summons, because summons are overpowered in FF7 and make the game much too easy (KotR?).
I'm sure MANY of you are aware with challenges. I personally only utilize light limitations, but I know many people who enjoy playing through the hardest way possible.
We should start out by simply listing certain limitations, seperate from each other. In ME2, a 'low level' challenge (a simple challege played in many rpgs) would be impossible because we level up automatically. However, a 'solo' challenge may be possible, as well as a "no skill points" challenge, both very common cookie-cutter rpg challenges. Other things may include limiting the use of certain skills, but that may be too limiting due to the low amount of skills readily available to each class. Something else that may work is "no ammo", "no upgraded guns", and "starting pistol only."
-------------
Challenges in every game are enforced by the honor system. Many players will fraps their entire playthrough of a certain challenge (look up 122333 ff12 challenge), but others will simply have to be trusted. Don't cheat. Nobody ever really does break the rules anyways, defeats the whole purpose of agreeing to a challenge in the first place.
