Didn't the Devs say that Liara+Ashley/Kaidan were left out so they can have bigger roles in ME 3 ? Makes you wonder why they even said this, if they bring back the ME 2 characters anyway.

It's called spin control.

It's not really hard to understand. Liara + Ashley/Kaidan can, and no doubt will, be integral to the plot. This is why the story needs them alive to ME3. Squad mates in ME2 can die and will consequently not be integral to the plot. This however does not mean that ME2 squad mates cannot be squad mates in ME3 or that you can have closure of ME2 romances in ME3, provided the LI survived the suicide mission of course.

Compare it with Dragon Age. Alistair was a LI, but also integral to the plot, hence alistair could not die and you could not loose him in DA. Leliana was a LI, but she was not integral to the plot, so she could die, or indeed never even be recruited.

The fact that Alistair couldn't die, because he was integral to the plot, didn't means that Leliana was less developed as squad mate or romance option.

Being a squad mate and a potential LI is not the same being integral to the plot.

Bioware is already getting bashed on everyones cameo BUT Wrexs'. Unless they're blind, then they won't have anyone of these characters leave. "EVERYONE LOVES MORDIN, LETS KILL HIM" , even EA people are smarter than that.

Additionally, the TaliBan would be PISSED.

The TaliBan? The f..f-ing TaliBan?! SERIOUSLY!? Sometimes being a level headed Tali fan along with the brainless jack offs REALLY sucks.

They were left out so that they couldn't die in the suicide mission, not because the ME2 characters were crowding them out.

I tend to agree with the OP.

You can't put Ash/Kaiden on the same level as the others. basically they are an interchangeable character. One of them will be alive in everyone's game, so whatever role they will play, will be interchangeable depending on which one lived. Liara is alive for everyone so she will be there.

You can't say the same for any of the ME2 characters. Everyone of them has the possibility of death at the end of ME2. So they are on the same level as Wrex. They may be in the game in some way but it will be as a cameo, they may even help you in some manner just I don't see them going on with the main parts of the story. These people just signed on to do a mission not hang around with Shepard for the rest of their lives.

Please don't anyone say how hard they worked to keep all the characters alive. It was laughably easy to keep all the characters alive. So much that the whole "suicide mission" label is just a bad joke. Probably the hardest person to keep alive is Kelly and the Normandy crew because that one you have to go right away or fail. The actual team though, is rather simple.

The hardest part will be what happens to the team members that were love interests. Not sure what they will do with them but I think the ME2 LI's are more flings than true love. Thane will probably be dead from his disease. Jack will be dead, think that is hinted at by her neural degeneration mentioned in her file. Miranda and Jacob assassinated by Cerberus for leaving Cerberus. Or off on other Cerberus assignments depending on how much Cerberus is actually a central part of ME3. Garrus and Tali are probably the most liked and so will be the hardest to write off. Though I see Tali as going back to the migrant fleet, probably being made an Admiral. Garrus, who knows maybe he will go on to be a new Specter and have his own missions to attend to.

I think you misunderstood me.

Compare it with Dragon Age.

DA:O is not the last part of a trilogy. However I think DA:O is a good example for the OPs argument. Just take a look at Awakening and the dog companion, who will probably have no role in the expansion. And he has little to no dialog and doesn't even need a high-priced voiceactor.

How do you reason? ALL romances end with sex or intimacy, what makes ME2 flings? Assuming you think that ME1 romances aren't flings. Personally, I don't think Tali risking her life to be with Shepard as indicative of a short term sexual relationship. I haven't done the other romances in ME2 so I couldn't talk about them.

I agree with the OP. The theme of ME2 was to assemble a team to take on the collector base. Many seem to argue that there is no sense to assemble a team if you can't keep everyone for ME3. I don't see it like this. Assembling the team was vital for the conclussion of the ME2 ending. You couldn't complete it without it. I don't see the important part as making everyone survive the suicide mission, but to actually be able to complete it at all. So i don't see it as "making everyone survive for the ME3 plot". Therefore i think it will be quite easy to write out many characters (Thane dies, Jack goes mental, Grunt goes breeding etc etc). Ofc, they can play big roles in ME3, as giving favours in case you made x person survive (Quarian flottila is easier persuaded for example if you made Tali survive). I just feel it's really difficult to give killable squad mates key parts ( unless they do it like Ash/Kaidan who fills the same role).

Yeah. I demand we get a brain-to-PC interface kit, so that it's so damn real we could change the fate of the galaxy by pissing onto councilor's shoes.

She gets tired of getting sick every week and goes back to the migrant fleet. :P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you pretty much have to be too stupid to be playing the game in the first place for Shepard to die? I've only heard of Shepard dying in total party wipes....
Besides, I've figured out how ME3 will play out if Shepard dies; Cerberus will spend 6 million (not billion) credits to cure Joker's brittle bone disease and reinforce his skeleton, and he'll go fight the Reapers on his own as a one-man wrecking crew. Because everybody knows Jeff Moreau is the REAL hero of Mass Effect, not Shepard!
