Explosive Drone or Attack Drone for Engineers on sub-Insanity?

I've read that certain enemies (like the Praetorian and the Geth Destroyers) ignore your drone, so it seems like Explosive Drone would be useless in certain fights. So on sub-Insanity runs (I'm on Veteran), is it better to take Attack Drone? Any advice is appreciated.

I generally like using attack drones mainly because I refresh (throw out early) my combat drone well before the timer kicks in or before the drone gets destroyed; as a result, the explosive drone never did any damage for me.

Also, the attack drone does quite a bit of damage (around ~40 per shot). As such, the drone will significantly soften up most targets and prep them for either warp or a headshot.

(Edit)  I don't remember about the destroyers or praetorians; I think I went sniper rifles to take care of those guys so the drone choice for them was a non-issue.

(Edit #2) You might want to check out http://social.biowar...8/index/1346686
Average Gatsby provides some pretty good info on engineers (although he does play on Insanity).  The info there will still help you on your sub-insanity run.

Praetorians don't entirely ignore, they just don't focus on it for that long before returning to you. A good strategy, when you want to move to a new cover, is to set your Drone out, wait for it to get distracted, then move. Be sure that your new cover is close enough since the Praetorian will only be distracted for a brief moment

Geth Destroyers, on the other hand, seem to ignore it completely as long as their cloaked. I've noticed a few times that the cloaked destroyers will sit on the drone once their visible. Meanwhile, the ones with flamethrowers completely disregard it.

Now to decide between Attack Drone and Explosive Drone. First let me say that both are pretty effective. Attack Drone, as long as it stays alive, can do some incredible dps while the explosive drone does its dps after death. Keep in mind that the Explosive Drone still does damage while its out, it's just not as much as the attack Drone.
You may find yourself switching between the two depending on the battle. Fights with a lot of Harbingers or YMIR mechs would want explosive drone while fights with limited bosses would want Attack. The difference is entirely situational, in my opinion.

On veteran theres not much point taking explosive drone imo, it won't die often enough to make it worth it.

On insanity, I'd go with explosive drone. Anything below that, go with attack. Sub-insanity, it doesn't die enough to make up the DPS.

...unless you're REALLY bad against YMIR (I think that's it) mechs. The explosive drone is a huge help against them, although overall, attack drone is more useful sub-insanity.

Even on Insanity, attack drone will live for quite a long time against non-major enemies like Harbinger and YMIR's (although they will against Scions). I can't really see much of a reason to use explosive drone on anything lower because, as others have said, it doesn't die enough.

Remember, the attack drone only has to be alive for 6 seconds to do more damage than the explosive drone on a single target, because it fires as soon as its cast.

Also, because praetorians essentially ignore the drone, you can cast it and have it do damage for the full 24 seconds as an attack drone. Thats a total of around 320-360 base damage over 24 seconds (40 damage every 3 seconds for 24 seconds).

And after the battle is over if yours and Tali's are still up they talk to each other.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like AD is the way to go for Veteran.
