I believe she is to be found in the tavern -not the chantry. But if the icon for Lothering on the overland map turned into a skull and bones -yeah, she's dead.

Terrible design, I think. To lose 2 characters just like that if you don't like sidequests- poof, all gone, no turning back.

it's called consequences.

They pretty much spell it out to you that if you don't rescue Sten he will be EATEN BY DARKSPAWN.

I do kind of agree about Leliana being easy to miss in the tavern though.

Well Considering that Lothiring is the First Place you End up Exploring It's not Terrible Design it's just people being Lazy and not getting them. I mean the quest to get her Involves WALKING into the Tavern and the Quest to get him requires you run back to the Chantry ONCE. If you can't be bothered to do that, then the player is just plain Lazy.

Sometimes people like to get a breadth first rather than a depth first; someone would like to get an initial impression for various different places rather than do every tiny thing in a particular spot.

guys it is pretty much implied that the darkspawn were going to eat that place up. It is like leaving redcliff when they were preparing to be attacked that very day.

I find the argument for not getting her (or at least stumbling upon her) pretty ignorant. Blame poor design (and be wrong) but the game doesn't need to hold your hand through every account and say "and some random red-haired woman from the trailers is in the tavern if you want to talk to her.. even though she's a complete stranger."

You click on 1 building in the first town you're really 'dropped off in'.. not to mention it only has 2 buildings you can enter and cutscenes/dialogue takes it from there upon entry. As for it being terrible design 'if you don't like side quests'.. you're playing the wrong game if you didn't want/don't plan to do side quests.. there's not much value in paying 50-60$ for a game to run the main story and that's it. They make the game (and side quests) hoping you have interest.. there's no terrible design behind it.

Just a quick observation. Realism in RPG games is as much a result of how you play and the subsequent consequences of that as anything else - in fact more so. "Real', as in real life, lots of opportunities are missed. Just in a game you often find out that you missed them eg someone pipes up on a forum about something like this and you think 'Damn! How did I miss that.' Then regret missing out, then bemoan the fact that you did - this is no criticism just an observation - it's a very normal reaction. But the fact that frustrating things might happen doesn't necessarily mean bad writing, and in fact can mean the exact opposite. If I'd missed Leliana, sure I'd be hacked off. Life's just a b*tch sometimes, ain't it? So, IMHO, it's good writing/ plotline, not bad.

cheers

Sorry for the necro-ism, but yeah... this just happened to me and now I'm p!ssed. IIRC the reason I didn't explore all of Lothering is because it was at a point in the game where I just didn't feel like it and wanted to go out and do stuff. You kind of expect hub towns to still be around. And now I'm screwed. Not to mention because I didn't want to kill Connor, I ended up doing the Magi and Redcliffe at the same time. And now I can either throw all of this out and start from a save something like 12 hours in the past, or I'll just never get these two characters. I understand MikeC99's point, but this... it's pretty extreme.

Yep, so no walkthroughs because I don't want things spoiled, hence why this happened. It mostly just bugs me because like with every other RPG, I'm playing this one as the "me" character, and now I've permanently screwed it up. I'll do another one anyway, and if nothing else, this has given me a damn good excuse, but obviously I'll pick a different background next time, and... you know, the OCD part of my brain is telling me that won't be the "me" character. Sigh.

It's not a screwup. An oversight maybe. Leliana is an awesome character, but you're not ruining the whole game by leaving her and/or Sten behind. Missing out on quality characters? Sure. But if this is your first time and you really want them? 12 hours behind isn't so bad. Hell, when I got the game, I was pretty far in, and my whole computer crapped out, so I had to start over from scratch when I reinstalled Windows.

I found my second playthrough more satisfying actually.

My first play thru is with Caedus Human Male Mage ( took the name caedus from Darth Caedus Han Solo and Leia son) and I did everything - getting leliana, sten etc and that is with no walkthru. It isn't that hard to do everything at once on your first playthru, I do it all the time in every game I play.

Then of course I happen to be a completetionist and I won't leave an area an hour or so later until i'm completely happy that I got everything. I even talk to everyone even the npcs that you can't talk to but they do say something at least several different times.

Something I learned after doing everything in lothering is that after completing just one main quest ie mage circle, dalish or the dwarf you will not be able to go back to lothering. If you want to be able to go back to lothering then after lothering do all the side quests you can do. except for the urn of sacred ashes, for some reason some time doing the urn of sacred ashes will start the destruction of lothering.

I guess, it wouldn't happen to me, since when I first play a game I'm very thorough, for the exact reason I'm afraid I may miss something. Walking past a tavern, really? ;)
Don't take it too hard, you'll still have many playthroughs left where you can do it right, and why shouldn't you play a "me" character again?

The one guy outside the tavern recommends not going in.

And Morrigan suggest you go to Lothering specifically to get news from the Tavern.

And Alistair suggests that you go to Redcliffe as soon as possible, which is what I did.

At any rate, it's great that choices can have far-reaching consequences like this in this game, I guess what I'm saying is that when I'm making a choice that gets two major characters killed, I'd like to know that I'm making a choice in the first place and not 12 hours later - which can happen if you do Redcliffe first and decide not to kill Connor.

I do think they could have had Leliana meet you as you leave Lothering if you don't go to the tavern, like she does if you turn her down initially anyway.

Though I think people who ignore the huge guy in the cage chanting in a strange language don't have much grounds for complaint.

Some of the stuff described in this thread makes me feel like I either slept through Lothering or accidentially turned and left as soon as I entered. I'd start over now, but the thought of having to suffer through Lost in Dreams again in the next few days makes me shudder.

You can't miss Leliana because of 'a few sidequests.' You have to finish one of the major quest lines.

Anyways, she doesn't die. She leaves with the Chantry and ends up in... I forget the city. It's to the northeast.

Sten dies though.

Really? The wiki says that she dies if you don't recruit her but I've never have (and never will!!) tried that.

*looks at wiki* *does not see this*

What section is this under?

Anyways, I asked Sheryl about this once and said that Leliana would probably just move with the Chantry.
