Really? The wiki says that she dies if you don't recruit her but I've never have (and never will!!) tried that.

*looks at wiki* *does not see this*

What section is this under?

Anyways, I asked Sheryl about this once and said that Leliana would probably just move with the Chantry.

It's in the epilogue section, at the end of Leliana's entry.

But I'll take Sheryl's word over the wiki if that's what she said.

Just a quick observation. Realism in RPG games is as much a result of how you play and the subsequent consequences of that as anything else - in fact more so. "Real', as in real life, lots of opportunities are missed. Just in a game you often find out that you missed them eg someone pipes up on a forum about something like this and you think 'Damn! How did I miss that.' Then regret missing out, then bemoan the fact that you did - this is no criticism just an observation - it's a very normal reaction. But the fact that frustrating things might happen doesn't necessarily mean bad writing, and in fact can mean the exact opposite. If I'd missed Leliana, sure I'd be hacked off. Life's just a b*tch sometimes, ain't it? So, IMHO, it's good writing/ plotline, not bad.
cheers

Surprised no one else said anything about your great post.  I agree with you.

Also, advice to newbies, USE TAB .  It will highlight all the places you can go to/items you can grab.  Impossible to miss the tavern then.

And, you only "missed out" because of meta-game knowledge.  This isn't poor design or a stupid decision by the developers.  Just play through without those 2 companions, and then be sure you have them on your next play through...it will force you to play using different party members.  I know there are some people that have never used people like Sten, Oghren, or Zevran.

I kinda did, I just wasn't specific. But yeah, he has a point.

No tab button on the PS3. Flame on, if you must.

Well... that's mostly true, but it's not really the whole truth. Yes, I was making assumptions based on common mechanics in RPGs ("this must be a hub town, so it's indestructible"), and if anything, the game should be praised for not conforming to these expectations. BUT like I said a few posts further down, I'm not sure I think it's a great game design (or narrative, for that matter) choice if this happens completely out of the blue.

But yeah, like I said, I'll just get those two next time. I'm annoyed because I tend to have certain specific plans when I start a character (in this case, recruit everyone, romance Leliana), but oh well. One upside to the fact that we don't get to continue with these characters in DA2 is that unlike with Mass Effect, I don't have to completely freak out because I just broke my import save. *cough*

(Yes, I'm that anal retentive, and I have no excuse.)

I know on the XBOX that when you bring up the wheel menu (I think) things are highlighted the same as if you had pressed tab.

My first playthrough I missed picking up Leliana because I actually didn't see the tavern. I got in to Lothering and was going to walk right through (had nothing to trade, no money to buy) when I noticed the big guy in the cage. So I got Sten but I never even thought about looking for the tavern until I left and at that point I wasn't turning back. Now that really screwed me over because I was a Warrior which meant I had to go a long time without a lockpicker, and I remember thinking to myself, "I can't believe they wait so long to give you a rogue."

Then I found Leliana on my second playthrough and needless to say I was pissed (at myself for missing the easy to find rogue). So yeah I missed out but it didn't "ruin" the game for me and I kind of wish there'd be more situations like this in games (where you can completely miss picking up party members or other items of note).

I'm a bit insane about looking around and checking out EVERYthing in games . . .I've been known to run along all 4 walls of every room I enter, and to try to go in every door I ever see. So it's hard for me to miss a character. Although I did miss the Tavern in Redliffe my first game - just never saw the path leading to it.

Does Leli really get an epilogue slide if you never find her? That seems . . .odd.

I know how you feel, SpacehamsterZH (cool handle, BTW). On my first playthrough, the "me" playthrough, I, too, missed out on some things.

Look at the bright side, though: Losing Sten and Leliana isn't the end of the game world. Sure, it closes off some sidequests and conversation options as well, but you can replace their skills later in the game.

Sounds reasonable.

Also, about no TAB key...I did some searching and found a sort of semi-TAB key for your PS3:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Tab

Apparently cycling through the D-pad highlights/tragets different items in the vicinity.  Not as effective as TAB, but it's better than nothing.

Smiles.

You have not truly experienced Dragon Age unless you've had to restart twice because of major screw ups.

And even then . . . on each replay you'll miss something that is not a game breaker . . . but you'll remember for next time.

I've told many gamers: Dragon Age is not for casual gamers who want to play once and done. It's for folks who liked World of Warcrack - repeating over and over - but without the drama of other people in guilds and what not.

Which is one of the reasons why this doesn't bother me that much (okay, I said I was p-d in my original post, but that was 10 seconds after I had discovered what happened), but it's kind of ruined my current character, and obviously, the game being structured the way it is, you don't want to do repeat playthroughs with the same race and class.

1st time thru missed Leliana and Redcliffe Tavern. I was one of those people wondering "ftw is my rogue!?" and before I finished Redcliffe battle I started a new game. Now (not that I need to anymore) I read every single quest-related/notes codex entry that pops up and will do so If I decide to cop out and buy DE2. 1st time I got Yusaris/Ageless I was cheesing.

One thing to note is that Lothering stays open until you do one of the 3 major Quest lines, However you can leave Lothering and do Denerim and The Urn of Sacred ashes quests and Lothering is still available But once you step foot in the Circle Tower, Ozammar of the Brecilian Forest then lothering is gone

If you miss Sten and leliana in Lothering because you're too impatient to actually PLAY an RPG, then that's you're fault. It's why it's an RPG and not some brainless hack n slash that you just fly through. I had absolutely no problems getting all the companions my first playthrough. Because exploration is part of an RPG.

If you're on PS3, you should be able to go into the settings on the main menu screen. There's some gameplay options and you can choose to turn on "highlight" or something like that. It basically makes anything interactive sparkle, like chests, plants, etc.
