I've completed the game, coming up for my second completion. And yes, I'll happily declare myself a cheater. After all, it's a single-player game, I'm not spoiling anyone else's fun, so I see no harm in cheating to make it play the way I want it to.
A bit of background: I play games for the plot. I have neither the time nor the inclination to play through endless combat or repeat sections until I stop walking into chasms, and so on. So I use cheat codes, trainers, anything that'll make the game more fun for me.
In the case of DAO, apart from the obvious Infinite Health cheats, I've been using Skill/Talent/Attribute trainers to configure my characters exactly the way I want them.
My question, then, is this: Through means other than basic gameplay, have you configured your characters in a way that changes their role?
An example: on both my playthroughs so far, my Wardens and Leliana have been my main DPS characters; the Warden (one warrior, one rogue) with dual longswords and Warden Commander armour, and Leliana with dual longswords and Juggernaut armour (first time round) and dual axes and Black Templar armour (this time). Named blades, enchanted with Grand Master runes, dual-wielding maxed out... Add to that Str and Dex around the 120-130 mark, those two characters tend to make pretty short work of most mobs.
Yes, it takes the challenge out of the combat, but that suits me just fine. The roleplaying, immersion, story... skipping the combat just moves me through to the bits I want to play. If losing a fight made any difference it would be a different story, but when it's just a matter of quickloading until you win... why bother?
Anyway. Anyone else mucked about with stats and equipment optimising characters for roles they're blatantly unintended for?
(Let's not have the cheating discussion in this thread, though, eh? It tends to get heated, and since I only cheat in games where it can't affect anyone else, I don't think it's a relevant discussion to have here.)
Have you tweaked the game for extra amusement?

I don't cheat. I customize.
I don't use the god mode codes or the bowlingforferelden one (although I had to TRY it out once, it's hilarious). You could go through the game and use the "killallhostiles" code repeatedly and experience ZERO challenge. But then it's just a movie, not a game.
I don't immediately raise my characters to level 30 or give them 5 gazillion gold.
I have never used one of the mods that gives you a sword that does +1000 damage.
I don't want a game-killing experience, and frankly for me all those things are. I do want challenge. Not an insane amount. I've never played the game on nightmare, and doing so ... just doesn't have any interest for me. I don't need the bragging rights.
Have I tweaked things here and there because ... well ... I just have a slightly different viewpoint on a design decision, and I turn to a console code or mod to overcome it ... yes.
Will I use custom items? Turn to mods that some people feel "imbalance" things (although I would disagree)? Tweak my talent tree a tiny bit here and there through the console or mods so I can take spells or abilities out of fixed sequence? Tweak other things to make my character concept fit my character concept even if I can't get there through "vanilla"?
Yes, I will.
Will I use a savegame/char editor if & when one ever comes out for DA? Yes, I will. I've done it with all my other crpgs. Again, not because I want to turn my chars. into ubergods that make demon lords tremble on nightmare. Just because sometimes that's the easiest way to get my chars into a concept I find hard to build the "vanilla" way.
And that's the way I like to play my SP game.

I used the two handed rebalance, to give two handed fighting a semblance of equality. I then used the two-handed speed increase two make up the differance. I also use my Con instead of my willpower to determine stamina, as it should be. I use some cutom wquipment that is on par with better items, but in a different form, such as a star-metal greataxe. I also made the Dragon scale stuff a lot m ore badass, because its frickin dragon scale, it should be awesome.

I use the respec mod, because I don't like some of the NPC builds.
I use the lock-bash mod, because I think my warrior should be able to smash locks with her big swords (DW warrior)
I use the chest at camp mod because I can. I store elfroot and runes there so I can use them for my PC and her gang. I don't see why she should have to trudge to the merchants all the time. I certainly enhances my game-play.
I haven't seen the two handed rebalance, so I'll have to check that out.

Favorite mods:
5th Dog Slot Mod
Advanced Tactics (though I discovered this one late but now I love it)
Runes for Everything (adds runeslots to more items)
Item Upgrade Mod (because I'd rather do it directly than use the sell-and-rebuy cheese)
There is one called the Dragon Age Beguiler which is close to an in-game character editor, but I couldn't get it to work. (I think it's because other mods were interfering with it). It's supposed to give you talents that in turn give you points.
And because there isn't a savegame/char editor, I found the best substitute, which is a mod that gives you 99 of the attribute/skill/talent tomes. (Forget the exact name.) Up until that point I was adding talents and skills through the "addtalent" console code. That way seems a bit easier, no need to look up 4-6 digit codes for everything.
One funky thing I've found -- if you find two or three different "add a custom merchant" to your camp mods, you've gotta PICK ONE. Because they are all incompatible with each other. Only one can work at a time. The camp seems darn big, but the code has room for only one custom merchant.
Anyway, I have one that sells a lot of cool custom gear.

There are several tweaks that I use to enhance the game play.
1. Advanced Tactics
2. My own file that gives all characters at all levels 20 tactics slots.
3. The two handed speed increase mod (removes the delay when you swing the weapon back and then wait for a bit before swinging it forward, drove me nuts)
4. Simple Difficulty Increase (increases potion cooldown to 30 seconds)
5. Respec Mod
Those are the only ones that change the actual gameplay, any other ones are cosmetic like
1. Extra Hairstyles
2. Pineapples tints and colors
3. The Less barking dog mod (makes dog bark ALOT less especially in camp, which is so nice while trying to hear your companions speak)
4. More Deathblows (makes all yellow monsters deaths trigger the cool deathblows)
5. Hat Removal
There are others that I use, but if they broke I wouldnt care that much.

I love cosmetic changes so I have pineappletree's tints and colours and the extra hairstyles. I have the ancient elven fix, the party camp chest (and I do have the dlc chest as well) and dialogue tweaks. I tried the respec mod but it seemed a bit flaky.

I have this as well, but I also got the respec mod, as well as a chest that increases the teir of ALL loot, including junk items and non unique ones.
advance tactics, new looks for morrigan and leliana.
5th companion dog slot (hardly use it though).
Shadow warden armor, gray warden tunic, as well as some custom mage armor (I forgot the name, forgive meh!).
and a merchant to hold crafting mats and such.

I seldom mod gameplay unless it's something really irksome. I do have Extra Dog Slot and a mod for Bodahn so that he carries all the stuff you need for health poultices. No more running back and forth to the Dalish for elfroot! Most of my other mods are art related -- new hairstyles, extra character presets, Pineappletree's Vibrant Colors, new looks for Alistair and Leliani and Sten. I might consider that mod to speed up a two-hander. I love the damage they do, but they're as slow as molasses in January.

Lessee. I have added some cheat items, but I don't always use them. I did play through normally first, but, like the OP, I don't always like slogging througn long battles.
Other than that, I have:
The lock bash thing, cause I think it should have been there to begin with.
Added a chest to the party camp.
The respec mod (so I can adjust a few picks on companions).
The winter forge (I use this to "upgrade" certain special items at intervals, like the Cousland family sword & shield, keeping them viable all through the game).
A custom armor & weapon set for Leliana (not "cheat" armor, and not instantly given - like the Blood Dragon set, you gotta buy it [for quite a bit of gold, too] from Bodric or whatever his name is)
--------------------
Cosmetic:
Pineaple Tree's vibrant colors (love that extra customization).
One of the various "nude" mods + enhanced sex cutscenes (again, something that should have been standard, IMO, but was obviously dropped to avoid an AO rating).
Along the same line, I have added a mod that un-neuters Dog.
Anti-jealousy mod (no more playa' hatin' yo!).
As far as I remember, that's it.

Why cheat through a game...the idea is to BEAT the game without using cheats.
I never use cheats...i get satisfaction knowing i completed the game the way it should be completed.

Well, I do one playthrough without them.
After that, I don't see any point to not using them. (But the other is to make sure that I can be positive console codes/mods are not responsible for any actual bugs I find in the game.)
Some people use mods that enhance difficulty. Like the longer potions cooldown above. There are even ones that make Nightmare harder than it already is.
Not my cup of tea. But see, that's great, we can all enjoy it the ways we want to.
I do find it weird, though, how some people recoil in horror at using mods or console codes to get extra gold or XP, and yet, somehow care zero about using bizarre exploits to get extra gold or XP.
Same thing, just takes longer.
*shrug* Do what you like.

Maybe I don't look hard enough, but I was unaware of mods to change the partys total XP. I'm glad for you if you want to use such, I don't. W/o using those and adding the three mini modules that have been fan created my last character made 25th which seems reasonable for this game. (Enigma dungeon, hammer & anvil inn, & alley of murdurers.)
Other mods Ive added: the one to change Morrigans face, stamina potions, winters forge, nudes, extra dog slot, rosannas armory, & interesting boss drops.
Yes some of those can change the power level of items, but most are simply improve gameplay.

First play through with any game is usually vanilla, because I haven't yet learned what needs to be tweaked or fixed for my own enjoyment.
Some cheats/tweaks I like that I haven't seen mentioned:
Runes for everything - now all items have a chance to have rune slots.
Better spellcasting - Allows all spells to be cast with your weapon drawn, removes the cooldown and casting time on all sustained abilities and shapeshifting abilities. Stops blood magic/berserk/others from being disabled after every fight. Multiple summons.
Plus to healing effects received fix
Expanded inventory - no more running out of room and buying backpacks.
Mod with DLC items - different names, same stats. You can buy them from Bodhan.
Wield any item one handed - this was incredibly fun (dual wielding yusaris and faith's edge!) but required me to keep the game on nightmare to keep the challenge.

I personally don't modify much, but I don't see the point in proselytizing about cheating here, as some of the DLC pretty strong in of itself.
I use my own two-handed weapon mod (because if anything needed a rebalance, it was that tree), and I just scooped up Advanced Tactics, which has gotten rave reviews.
Caveat here is that once I've played the story once or twice, all that's left for me is the combat, so I tend to want to make that as entertaining as possible.

I'm not sure the word "cheat" even applies to a single-player game. Cheating is gaining an unfair advantage over other competitors. In a single-player game there are no other competitors; there is in fact no competition.
I find the anti-cheating attitude from game developers intensly annoying. A game designer shouldn't be competing against game players - they should simply be empowering the game player to have fun. After all, that's why the game player paid money to the designer. How many other industries consider paying customers to be competitors to be outwitted and outthwarted.
Now, as for my game, I'm only using three mods.
First, better tooltips. The more info the better.
Second, NoFollowerLevel, which starts all NPCs with no points spent. Now Sten is revealed in all his Qunari majesty as a dual-axe combat god!
Third, the mod that, umm, ahhh, *mumbles* removesclothesfromsomefemalefiguresinthegame...

originally I thought since my origin story was "Noble" I should start with a bit more gold in my pocket *cough*...after playing through a few hours I soon realized that gold honestly wasn't an issue for me so I deleted that character and started anew. On my next playthrough I'm just going to keep it fresh and now that I know what's what in the game there's less guesswork one what to buy/not to buy from the start.
