ok I made an infiltrator awhile back but accidently deleted it when cleaning out all of my reject characters (messed up appearances for the most part) so I can't test this out without going through a 15 minute intro to start a new character, but...
does tactical cloak's effect diminish when you melee an enemy while cloaked???

I am pretty sure any combat action deactivates cloak. But wait for an accurate response before you go off making another Infiltrator

If you happen to run into crossfire I believe that takes you out of cloak as well.

That would explain some of my more embarassing deaths!

Yep. Even reloading your weapon will break the cloak.

yeah really looking to make a close combat character and just didn't really like the vanguard because I have no clue how to use them... I really like charge, but didn't care for pull or shockwave. I am sure they are useful, and they did help me out in certain parts of the game but I rarely used them.
So far my engineer is pretty good at getting in people's faces with drone and dominate/ai hacking really messing with the enemies head, plus cryo freeze is nice to pop off to ensure survivability when dealing with unprotected enemies trying to flank you especially the annoying varren/fenris and krogan... but looking for something new.
so far it is a toss-up between a sentinel and infiltrator. I am leaning more towards sentinel because with bonus power of reave I can handle any and all protection types with reave and overload allowing me to utilize cryo freeze for the fun factor. plus going assault armor will allow me to replenish lost shields halfway so that I am not knocking at death's door too too often. On the other hand if cloak does stay up for the full time when melee attacking, than infiltrator might win the toss-up because it has better survivability with versatility of cloak.
I am most likely gonna try them both out because even if melee attacks
do trigger the cloak to drop, running with a flamethrower would be fun as well. I am at that point that I want to find fun builds that aren't exactly practical but at the same time are effective.
EDIT : took me awhile to type this up so didn't see ya'll comments... so sentinel might win for now. wow didn't know cloak was so sensitive.

If you really like melee and Charge, then I think you should play Vanguard. You don't need to care for pull or shockwave. You really don't even need them. All you need are the Strength Boost Pad shoulders, Heavy Charge, and your shotgun of choice.

Reloading and getting caught in crossfire does Not drop you out of cloak, that's only firing your weapon and melee attacks. I really like both the inf and sentinel, so I'd say try em both. Generally you'll spend more time in cover on an inf, but fights are often over much faster.

Cloak increases weapon damage output, not melee ability.
Its still pretty cool to use a shotgun and be the CQC Infiltrator. You can melee and shotty at the same time in this game.

I tried one out and died a lot even on veteran difficulty, and like I said I most likely don't know how to use them. It's probably one of those trial and error classes. maybe that class is a little too much in your face for my taste.
anyways went ahead with the sentinel and it's working out great. the avalanche heavy weapon is just flatout awesome for those moments like in grunt's recruitment mission when you have to take down jedore or else she will continue to feed you flanking krogan. pop an avalanche round onto a krogan down to health and he literally stayed frozen for the whole battle allowing me to focus all my attacks on jedore... the heavy mech guy tends to get caught up somewhere in the middle allowing you easy line of sight to jedore without interruption.
freezing enemies is just so satisfying... so vanguard might get a second chance due to cryo ammo... I personally don't enjoy using it, but giving it to your squad with squad cryo while you stick with incendiary ammo is fun
