Lorick Tegrane has survived the battle of ostagar and earned the respect of his comrades, but as he and his band return to ferelden they find only civil and destruction awaiting them, it will take all of loricks strengh to survive the civil war and he still has darkspawn to help defeat.

Chapter 1: A Teryns lies

The army marched to denerim with a fear enforced silence, being press ganged into loghain's service had been insult enough but being forced to listen to his soldiers babbling about the grey wardens supposed treachery had been infuriating. Lorick wanted to spit he wanted to curse, but after a soldier from the bann of lothering's retinue had been decapitated for questioning their leaving the village lorick had decided silence would be a smarter course of action.

There were seven ash warriors in total left from the origional forty that had been at ostagar, lorick had led them out of the marshes and into lothering hoping to find respite but instead they had been forced at swordpoint to join the teryn's army or be considered deserters. Lorick knew he would have to esacape with his men, but how he was going to flee from a vast army before they reached denerim was a question he was still trying to answer.

It still sickened lorick to think about the implications of ostagar, the king and wardens dead and loghain their betrayer, lorick could hardly believe that the man that had saved the nation from orlais now threatened its very existance with his power plays. Lorick had grown up in amaranthine hearing the stories of loghains heroism, the stories were still being told by the column of his men but now they were laced with filth ridden lies.

Lorick would have to find a way out of the teryn's army and soon, perhaps the bannorn would rise against loghain and oppose his plans to take control but lorick could not be sure. Lorick decided he would lead his companions to the bannorn, it was risky but it was the only chance of escaping loghains service, perhaps they would not rise against loghain but even so lorick knew they would have more safety in the bannorn then denerim.

They would escape tonight he decided, while the army made camp and the sentries were expecting attacks from outside the camp. Lorick thought of ostagar with a feeling of disgust filling him "at least at ostagar we knew who our enemies were" lorick thought angrily.

Chapter 1 part 2: The Desertion

Lorick and the other ash warriors crept through the camp with unlit torches in hand, lorick intended to create a distraction big enough to draw the enemies attention long enough to slip by them. As they saw the line of wooden spikes that marked the entrance and exit from camp lorick gave the signal "little farewll present for the teryn" lorick whispered to his men with a wicked grin.

Two of his group Frayne and Emara lit their torches and began to light the edges of tents as the sprinted through the darkened camp, as the fires began to spread they hurled the torches inside a large tent and rushed back to loricks side. The ash warriors did not wait around and moved in the darkness as the fires spread through the tents nearby.

The camp soon rang with alarms and the ash warriors moved like shadows through the chaos they had created, the exit from the camp was up ahead and the ash warriors knew their freedom would be payed for with the blood of the guards. They moved close to the sentries by the gate and lorick raised his hand giving the signal, two ash warriors rushed the guards and plunged their knives into the unfortunate sentries necks and ribs. The dogs that had been with the guards met their ends too at the hands of the ash warriors mabari who tore at the dog's throats.

The ash warriors moved through the exit quickly, lorick knew his distraction would soon lead the teryn's men to hunt for them. They fled into the darkness of the night and hoped to the maker that they would not be persued.
