I was just recently wondering this after finishing both books.
How different do you thinks would've played out if Maric was still King at ostgar? And not Cailan?
Was it still doomed to defeat? Or would have everyone retreated?
Or maybe they would've beaten back the Darkspawn there?
I am just curious to see what everyone thinks.
If Maric was King?

Loghain himself says that it's needed more than legends to defeat an enemy, or so, that Maric would understand. So my guess is that there would have been no heroics, and if there WERE some, Maric wouldn't be near the frontlines, and my guess is that Loghain would do the charge. In fact, he himself says he would lead the charge if Maric ordered to conquer the fade. I know nothing of the books, so I can't relate Maric to them, but if he's really what the... codex says he is, then I guess everything could have happened. In fact, just look at the size of Loghain's unity. You can see the torches moving out back in a far distance. I wouldn't be surprised if those were some 10,000 soldiers out there.

Loghain would have charged and thrown away his army.

There probably wouldn't have been an ostagar, the only reason there was going to be was Caelin wanted one big battle. They probably would have continued small skirmishes in till they had the full support of Fereldan's army /and/ knew more about the strength of the darkspawn horde.

Ferelden would have rallied together and fought off the Darkspawn until the Archdemon appeared, in which case the plentiful Grey Wardens would kill it. Basically a lot less interesting version of what actually happened.

Cailan would have grown to become a firmer man if Maric was alive, and may have become a skilled captain after Loghain's own liking. The main battle of Ostagar may have struck a brief victory, but to wait for the Orlesian wardens would have been imperative, and Maric would have seen the tactical sense in it, especially if it was Duncan who assured him of this. The treaties may have even been put to use through the grey wardens, and with a more united Ferelden front the Blight may have been stemmed, albeit with the loss of several soldiers and a few commanders. But of course this would have meant we could not have the game as it is.

Another theory : Maric would call for help from the armies of Orlais. They somehow accept and are, surprisingly, put on the front lines. Loghain's forces than wait... at the Orlaisian border, while Fereldan's dwarves, elves, mages and Grey Warden start attacking when Orlaisian forces are completely destroyed. When this happen, a messenger is sent to Loghain with the orders to strike Val Royeaux. And bingo, Ferelden just got a little bit larger. BUT no, the guy decided to take a swim in the frozen seas away from Ferelden and died... ehh...

I think Maric would've considered waiting for Orlesian Grey Wardens, but Loghain probably would've committed the same treachery or tried something. He hates Orlesians, and left Maric's own son to die to the darkspawn to prevent Orlesians from coming in.
I think Maric would've never gone to Ostagar, and maybe fight the darkspawn with a whole Ferelden army, possibly along with soldiers provided by the Grey Warden treaties.

Maric would have left Ostagar since he isn't a fool like Cailain. Therefore they would still have had their army.
