NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT

Microsoft Windows XP Professional - SP3
DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later

PROBLEM DETAILS
game freezes, sound stutters
Report error to microsoft window pops up and game closes.
(Thankfully, it doesn't take windows down with it!)

Always occurs in an intense battle when things are getting good and I'm starting to get swarmed and will, in all likelihood, die.
I rapidly turn the mouse to the right (possibly still firing) and press the shift button to bring up my options.
Then the game freezes.

Reloading the game and entering the same battle and pressing shift in this manner will repeatedly cause the game to crash.

I do not use hotkeys.

Currently fighting husks on Aequitas as an engineer on Hardcore.
Had 7-8 crashes with her.

First full play-through with soldier had no crashes on Normal.

I'm having the same issue. Even reported it. Haven't seen a single response from Bioware. I'd be nice if they could add this to the list of known issues.

True!

Just had it happen again.

getting into brawl with a husk again whilst retrieving the IFF

both team-mates dead and I was fighting the last husk.

so there wasnt exactly a lot else going on.

All I was going to do was pull up the options to freeze him

May have been pressing simultaneously, W,A,F and shift whilst reloading

Damn frustrating way to end a good fight

Update: I got past the level by reducing difficulty to 'Normal' and taking the husks out almost entirely before getting into mele range.

Not a great work around when it removes any danger or fun

i'm not sure it this is related to your problem, but i had a lot of crashes during that mission to. After a little testing, it seemed that if i try to rearrange my hotbar during combat or at a point where i can't create a savegame it would cause the game to crash. Sometimes in combat pause, when you try to select an ability, you accidently move it a bit, which would cause the crash as well.

My solution for this was to NOT use gamepause or create savegames after every battle. Using the hotkeys doesn't seem to cause any trouble.

oh, the reason for this could be that the game is trying to save the new hotbar configuration when saving is not possible. I think bioware is already looking into it.

Thanks,

My crashes occur as soon as I hit shift, so I've not even the opportunity to rearrange the hotbar. Nonetheless it could still be the same issue.

I'll take your advice and map a few powers to my mouse.

I enjoy this game for its combination of action and tactical battlefield management - so its frustrating as hell when the latter causes the game to crash.

Strange tho' - I would have thought the secret EMP game freezing attack the husks have would have been more of a geth thing...

Update: A dozen more CTD (crash to desktop)

Its not just the husks. Its just pressing the shift key and firing at the same time in any fight.

Should be easy enough to set a trace on that.

Try not to press things that cause it as I don't think anyone knows a fix for the shift issues. There is a problem with the core ligning but I don't think you have that problem since it would of been crashing at earlier points in the game. Anyhow you can always try turning down the video settings and see what that does.
