At what part of the game do you get a dog or does a certain quest have to be completed?  I'm currently back at the Tower in Fade not the test at the beginning of the game.

Actualy you get it after the orzamar quest.

(haven't played a human noble yet though)

Didn't know that but you get one pretty much straight away with the Human character.
