You have to blow up the base but you can choose who to save. The crew member guarding the bomb or the one with the distraction team.

Whoever you choose to save, the normandy comes to pick you up from there.

What's been said.
And yes, the base HAS to be exploded. It's part of the mission as well as the story.

The distraction scene gives a better cutscene...and you save captain Killrahe as well

I thought Kirahe survives either way as long as you do those options to help out his team.

However, if you go back for the other team and Kirraha, the cutscene shows who you leave to let die struggling against the bomb before it explodes. It's very sad.

Hmmm....I thought in that case only Commander Rentola survived but maybe I'm wrong.

I wouldn't say so. If you do it right, even the captain survives.

If by 'everyone' you mean both Kaiden and Ashley, then no, one of them will always die on Virmire.

I've done everything to keep the distraction squad alive, but when I arrive to the bomb site for the first time, when they disembark the bomb, kaidan tells me kirrahe is dead... Is already sad to mourn a squad member, I don't want to mourn also Kirrahe... :-(
