There's Mass effect universe, and then there's tasty speculation. Theories float off the front page into obscurity, and I weep for them. Because once we forget these threads ever existed, someone else comes and starts posting them all over again. It is a neverending sad cycle of death and rebirth. At one point I decided to save links to some, so here it goes: the ME Speculation Compendium, with abstracts and references where possible. It has unwittingly grown monstrous, hope it saves someone else  the typing.

Note: most of these discussions are not based off anything, really, and should be taken with the grain of salt. Or with the whole mouthful of salt.

The Why and How of the Reapers

The reaper theories start simple: the reapers need resources. So they harvest us for biomass.
So what is the reapers goal in wiping everything out every so often? (by flacracker) and in particular the post by Lyrandori. IMO, This theory is quickly running out of gas, what with Harbinger's comments and all.

'Help us, Reaper! You are our only hope!' Here's just one thread devoted to it Are the Reapers Evil? [and more Reaper thoughts] *SPOILERS* (by DannyGloverfromPredator2) (There were longer threads about that, but alas, I can't find them) In short, the reapers are helping humanity achieve technological singularity.
They are trying to put all separate human minds into one biosynthetic
construct that will be the pinnacle of our evolution. They like us,
essentially, they like us very much indeed. Let's accept their help
gratefully and quietly, mmmkey? This is one of the more popular
theories, with good arguments both pro and contra.

'The biosynthetic Darwinism' All species evolve, and the basis of evolution is variability. The reapers evolve by acquiring traits from the processed races to incorporate variation into their evolutionary process. Let's help them make their babies!  A Giant Human Reaper? (by anmiro) is a discussion for those who believe in Darwin.

'Don't just stand there, Dr. Reaper, operate!' Unchecked evolution of organic sentient life is bad for this galaxy, like chicken pox. The galaxy needs to be rid of us, and the reapers are caretakers doing their job. Are you duly shamed now, you human you? The arguments for this were presented here: The reapers has the right to extinguish us (by Qario) — a nice long thread that went off on a tangent and turned into some generic philosophic debate

'You organics are all racist!' The Reapers had a bitter quarrel with their original creators, and wiped them out. Now they are wiping people out because we remind them of their former masters. It's a conflict between Master and Servant, like the quarian/geth one, but on a larger scale. Here are the arguments by AusShep in reply to the thread that labelled itself 'The Official Reaper Theory Thread '

'I am not the real Cthulhu, I just happen to look like one' There is someone else in space, way more badass than the Reapers. The Reapers just want to protect us/themselves/the galaxy from this threat. A neverending chain of badass villains were each next one is more badass than the previous. The chain has got to stop somewhere. I can't find the thread where it was being discussed, but there was one. Drop a line if you have it linked.

'It's Terminator all over again'
Are the reapers from the future ? (by Sandman 95 ) Not going to comment... but the speculation is there. Right over there...

The mechanics of the reaper invasion: Theory about Haestrom's sun, Dholen (by damage_incorp96 ) There is a mass relay hidden inside Haestrom's sun, and the Reapers are going to use it. That is why the sun became unstable. And Tali failed to find it out...
Alternatively, they may go through the backdoor that is TIM's sun. Alternatively alternatively, TIM's sun IS Dholen. Go to this thread if you want to know more: Dying sun (by SimonTheFrog )

'Let's talk it out.' Peaceful resolution of the Reaper problem possible? (by pelhikano) The title of the thread is self-explanatory. Maybe we'll get the chance to talk the reapers out of destroying us? That would be good.

'The Council? We have dismissed that claim' The bits and pieces of Sovereign scattered around have indoctrinated the council after ME1. That's why they are so unsupportive.  Theory on why the council does not believe you (by Proellx)

All things TIM and Cerberus: what is Illusive hiding, huh?

At the core of most TIM's discussions lies the question: is TIM evil, or is he the only one who truly cares?

Why do so many dislike cerberus? The Illusive Man knows what has to be done (by SomeoneStoleMyName) AND
Is Cerberus really Evil? (by glitter_guld) are essentially one and the same thread.

Anti-TIM:
-TIM was behind Akuze, experimented on sentient beings, including humans like Subject Zero or Paul Grayson. Immoral!
-TIM is lying to Shepard about the trapped Collector ship and the derelict Reaper. A little trust wouldn't hurt, no? He also leaks important data about Shepard, arguably making Shep's life harder.
-TIM's smile after he gets the base is evil. Also, he has eye implants.

Pro-TIM:
-TIM has brought Shepard back to life and funded Normandy restoration. TIM's crew is less racist than the old Alliance crew.
-TIM is the only one in the galaxy who cares about the Reaper threat (or so he claims).
-TIM is human. That has to count for something (or so he claims again!)
-TIM gets things done. Also, he has a cool backdrop.

So, TIM might be a Reaper agent, as discussed in the Is the Illusive Man an Indoctrinated Cyborg? (by Tilarta) , because he
-constantly sets traps for Shepard,
-knows about Collector's attacks beforehand
-his speach about 'advancing humanity, no matter the cost' kinda rhymes with 'I am the harbinger of your ascension through destruction'
-Also, he has eye implants.
Or so people say...

The Illusive Man wants a Human-Reaper hybrid...(by Lyrandori) And it's Shepard! Shepard's implants are reaper tech, much like Paul Greyson ones. Also, TIM has eye implants himself.
It's a popular idea, and I see it thrown around often, but this particular thread ended way too soon. If anyone has a link to the longer one, drop me a line

How is saving the base wrong (by jalynntownsend) The ultimate thread to discuss repercussions of the endgame decision. This thread takes some freaky turns while speculating, one of them being that TIM is the last actual prothean alive. But... what about his eye implants? Good read, if you like walls of text.

Wilson and Cerberus (by Marstead) - Wilson never betrayed Cerberus. Instead, TIM decided to take Shepard for a shakedown run, and kill off Wilson as an unwanted eyewitness in the process. Or so th OP believes.

Did Paragon Shep REALLY quit Cerberus? (by Jeremy Winston) Shepard is still flying his ship, manned by his AI, and recieves his funding. Even after endgame TIM still has full control over Normandy... or has he?

Illusive Man - a Shadow broker? (by TheLostGenius) TIM is the Shadow Broker, right, because they are both shady. The consensus is a NO, but the thread is still there.

The Illusive Man lying about Liara T'soni? (by Ararara) He knows that she's working against the Shadow Broker, yet does not let us contact her in the start. Oh, the bastard!

Mass Effect: the soap opera. Relations and relatives.

Aria, the ruler of Omega, used to run with Wrex when he was younger. He remembered her fondly in ME1. Or not.  Is Aria formally known as Aleena? (by Luke Pearce )

Miranda's father is... a Shadow Broker! The Illusive Man! Ambassador Udina! Or any other of the respected gentlemen mentioned in the following thread. Arguments abound. Miranda's father is.... (by Railstay)

Liara's father is... Illium bartender, Aethyta! The Bartender... name and possible other interesting theory... (by Gemini1179)

Liara will become... an Ardat-Yakshi (possibly because her father was Samara) Theory: Will Shepard have to kill Liara in ME3? (by implodinggoat )

I think people got scared by text wall, thats why this is on page 3 now for some reason.

Well put together though, although a few of those threads are pretty crazy speculation theories which dont have much weight.

It is cool to see some of these ideas though as I have missed a few. Good to see them in one place
