Alright, I'm on a new game low level soldier, maybe about level 6 or 8, but what's the best way to beat the praetorians on the Collector ship and Horizon? I just started Horizon with Mordin, Miranda, and an ML-77.

If you take your time, the Praetorian really isn't much of a threat, Especially on Horizon. He's alone, so as long as you keep your squadmembers away from you. and stick your head out often, the praetorian will pretty much stay focused on you. You can then use squad powers on it, in addition to AR'ing his Barrier off. once his barrier's down you can switch to the Sniper rifle and plink away, or continue spraying him with AR ammo. Far as I know the heavy weapons case to the back refills from time to time, so you have an unlimited source of ammo.

On the Collector ship it's a bit more complicated because you have husks bumrushing you, and collectors plinking at you. basically ignore the praetorian until those targets are dead. The key to Praetorian killing is to keep your squadmates away from you :) because invariably they'll jump into the beam and die.

Try firing the Missile Launcher without getting up out of cover. Turn around and let the homing do most of the work for you. Other than that trick, don't use the ML77. Its probably the weakest heavy weapon. Darnalak probably told you the best way to deal with it; take your time and stay away from your squadmates.

On the Horizon mission, you may want to take a step back from the box cover and aim just above the box. Sometimes you can hit it without it seeing you.

you'll want to use Mordin's incinerate and Miranda's warp as much as you can. Your weapon choice should be primarily the assault rifle but if you get enough distance between you and the Praetorian whip out your sniper for some quick armor damage. Also you'll want to use adrenaline rush not only for some extra damage but to quickly dash across the room so it can't get close enough to ground pound you. As you know it will do this anyway about every third of health lost once it does use Miranda's warp as much as possible and fire away with the assault rifle. You'll also want to use incendiary/inferno ammo as much as possible unless you have armor piercing/tungsten which would also work. Again the key is to never let it get close enough to ground pound you. As far as your heavy weapon goes it can certainly make the battle faster but its not entirely necessary if you want to conserve ammo, if not just fire away whenever possible

I found that trying to stay behind cover didn't work. I ended up strafing in circles around the largest obstacle I could find. If you do it right, there'll be part of the enemy exposed but you'll still be shielded from its weapon.

How does staying in cover not work? The only times praetorians come up have tons of cover. Just hide when it's firing, and either shoot or move to more distant cover when it isn't. Cake on any difficulty with just a Shuriken and Carnifex.

How can you be that low-level?

Horizon Prat is easy, just a simple pattern. Take cover and Collector beam it as it advances on you, until it drops to the ground to regen its barrier. Take that opportunity to run to cover at the other end of the map. Repeat until dead.

Collector ship prat is tougher, because there isnt as much room, cover isnt as abundant, and other enemies attack you at the same time. Deal with the stray husks and drones that come at you first, and repeat the same pattern (I usually just run up and down that ramp in a circle).

In either case, you can also often just kite it running from cover to cover, letting your teammates kill it, because the Prat will always come after you, often completely ignoring your squad, though this will take a while.

I'm not sure about leveling up, but I only did those 4 recruitment missions.

I found the best option when using Mordin and Miranda as above would be to use Warp and Incinerate on it, and swap the ML-77 for the Collector beam weapon, it makes short work of armor you can usually drain at least a third or even half the armor bar in one firing. I usually hold off on using the heavy weapon ammo until that fight.

Praetorians are a piece of cake. As someone has said, circling around an obstacle works best, especially if you have damage powers. Warp is your best bet since you can arc it, but reave also works as its instant travel.

In horizon, I put my party members over at the ledge to the far left, while I circle the truck that's near that ledge. It allows squaddies to take potshots at it while shephard keeps aggro.

For collector ship, get rid of the husks and the two collector drones first, then you circle up the ramp, through the other side, down the other ramp, and go back up the first ramp again. It takes time, but its pretty much foolproof as long as you run when the praetorian breaks his fire.

I just ran around the pillar to the far left and kept firing warp (after I killed the husks and Collectors).  The preatorians are the easiest enemies in game if you can get to a good area to run circles... just remember that sometimes they slow down and sometimes they speed up as if they were on eezo crack or something (and they will randomly change directions).

I find that keeping my distance from the praetorians drastically reduces the frequency with which they drop to the ground and recharge their barrier, so lots of running backwards was the way I did it. I found if I didn't stay in one spot for long they weren't a problem...

I have two videos of this first fight, one with an engineer and one with an adept, both are weaker than a soldier. The essentially strategy is the same for all classes. Basically you want to pick out a route around which you can run from tall cover to tall cover, without actually locking yourself down, but darting in and out. Here's the links: Adept and Engineer

one thing soldier is good at is run away real fast with their storm speed boost.
