In the game they call Shepard a Marine and his crew Marines. BUT, they say he is in the Navy. I know they are the sister branch (Navy is the sister branch of the Marines), but it all comes down to rank. If Shepard is Commander he is in the Navy. If he is in the Marines, his rank should be a Lieutenant Colonel. So what is he, a Marine or a Navy boy?

He's in N7 Special Ops, Alliance Fleet. It's not exactly the US Military y'know.

Everyone in space is in the alliance navy. But he's an N7 Marine. I imagine they follow the Navy ranking system.

Well Marines are really in the Navy. U.S. Marine Corp is a division in the U.S. Navy and answers to the Secretary of the Navy. Or atleast that was what my step father said being ex-Marine.

So any way you put it. Shepard is in the Navy.

Incorrect.  Ranking systems for Alliance Navy and Alliance Marines differ.  Explained in ME1 codex.  Do not recall specific ranks.

Shep is an Alliance Marine.

Wait, this is the future, and the world has come together. I'm gonna assume they all follow one type of structure.

The very first entry of your journal calls you in ME1 Lt. Commander Shepard. So... a Navy Marine?

Shepard is a Marine. Marines are the security and ground garrison arm of the Systems Allaince Navy. If your a military soldier for the System Alliance you serve in the System Allaince Navy as a Marine.

Marines are not in the Navy. They were made a long time ago to protect Navy ships, but then they changed and now they get dropped off by the Navy. But you are right that the U.S. Marines are the division of the Navy. But they are not IN the Navy.

Shepard's not N7, no-one is, it's not an organization - it's a training program.  the "N" designates special forces, and the "7" designates the highest level of proficiency.  When you pass a first aid course, you're not "first aid" you're first aid qualified.

As for the Marines/Navy question, it's both.  The Systems Alliance is a coalition government headed by the 18 largest nations of earth.  It stands to reason that the Systems Alliance Military would have a completely new structure.

The Mass Effect Wiki states the following -
The Alliance Navy is the branch of the Systems Alliance military responsible for naval operations. The Alliance Marines, the ground operations branch of the Alliance military, are a specialized branch of the Navy.

No, Lt. Commander is Navy. So this proves he is navy. Most likely a Navy corpsman since they fight too.

Not in ME.  It is not the same system as the US armed forces, stop trying to apply that system.

actually Lt.Commander is a navy rank. if she was a marine she would be Major Shepard instead of Commander Shepard.

Navy                    -                      Marines
Ensign                -                   2nd Lt.
LT. JG                 -                     1st.Lt
Lt.                         -                  Captain
Lt. Commander    -                 Major
Commander         -            Lt.Colonel
Captain                -                 Colonel

Yes.  Shepard can be either male or female, player's choice.  So, some people just refer to Shep as a female.

I am not altogether certain how you missed this, but, whatever...

Shepard is a Marine, and there's no such thing as an "ex Marine", unless he or she is dishonorably discharged.

If Shepard were Navy, he'd be wielding a coffee cup instead of a weapon and he'd never do any dirtside ops...

I'm saying because most people go by he. I made a FemShep but I don't say she. Idk it's just me I guess.

Yeah, I play as dudeshep most of the time, my girlfriend plays femshep, so when I say "he" and my g/f says "she" it used to generate some confusion. "Who now? I thought we were talking about Shepard? Who's this 'she' you're talking about? Aaahh, I get it." Not so much now though, kinda got used to it...
