I think he's a great character who was completely trustworthy without any of the baggage some of the other characters had. In fact, I would say that he is very much like a Paragon Shepard. He works for Cerberus but doesn't trust them. He's willing to sacrifice himself for the mission (he did volunteer for the vents) and he was the only person who felt Shepard was owed the truth (at the beginning of the game). Even people playing as FemSheps hate him fiercely. It really makes me think it's more than "he's boring" because boring characters usually inspire apathy; not hate.

Bioware gives us a well adjusted honorable character who is a perfect fit for the canon Shepards crew and it seems everyone hates him. Why?

It's just that you could replace him with one of those "mechs" and no one would be able to tell the difference.

I like Jacob. He and my male Shepard got along well.

The backlash is partly because of his poorly-written romance with FemShep, and partly because a lot of people don't think he's very useful in a fight.

Also, apparently it's a bad thing to be one of the only crewmembers with his head on straight.

One beef that people have is if playing a femShepard the flirting is very sleezy and... let just say... sleezy? You could hear the music from a bad 70's porn queue up and Quagmire walking by saying giggidy.

The other is he seems to be the Doubting Thomas when recruting some of the characters. It is fine but having the same person complaining like 3 times about a recruitment can get gratting. They should have had it alternate more with Miranda whinning. Both did get on my nerves with Legion, I wanted to space both their arses.

I honestly didn't mind Jacob all that much. He was a fine character in his own right but the problem I have with him is exactly the same problem I have with Miranda; they fall into cliche way too easily.



Miranda is the cold calculating...b***h initially with the reasonable, softer core inside.

Jacob is very much a "bro" character who you may be friends with, but are never REALLY interested in.



He's just not nearly as three-dimensional as the other characters (especially with the likes of Garrus) so Jacob often gets relegated to the backburner. I will admit, his loyalty quest was pretty damn awesome though.

He constantly second guesses you, insults people you just recruited and has the most annoying "Let's chat" approach for Shep (not his fault).

"I'm interested in getting to know you better" WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? No one he shoots you down.



Anyway, less dialogue than Garrus, most useless powers, most useless weapons.

Jacob reminds me of Cernd in BG2.  By which I mean I find him to be utterly generic.   I "hate" him like I hate my end table.

Many people are thrown off by how Femshep acts towards him during their conversations, even when they aren't pursuing the romance path and decide to abandon talking to him altogether because they don't like the game 'dictating' how their character should interact in such a way. Then there's apparently the fact that his actual romance path is very shallow and un-fulfilling according to the people who have completed it. (I can't personally attest to that yet though.)

Personally I think he's a good friend regardless of what gender your Shepard is, and while he is rather 'boring' in the sense that he has no personal baggage I prefer him over Kaidan ten times over. (Before the Kaidan fangirls kill me, let me make it clear that I do like Kaidan. He's not my favorite character, but he's not someone I can hate either. Like Jacob I view him as good friend material. However out of the two I prefer Jacob.)

I play as MaleShep most of the time, so I don't get the same exposure to the conry romance.

I thought he was a pretty nice guy, for the most part.

I like Jacob, he acts like a soldier. He doesn't spend the whole game talking about his feelings. No crying because he is an assassin, no whining about a crappy childhood, just getting the job done.

Jacob is an okay guy with few problems so he kind of blends in with the background, much like Kaidan.



Oh and there's the whole "I just want to *talk*" line that FemShep says in a sultry tone, I die a little every time I hear that.

Just some characters don't stick as well as others and for me its Jacob, Thane, and Miranda.

Edit!: I don't hate Jacob, it's just that talking to him induces my gag reflex. And I play vanguard so he's useless to me in combat.

I don't flat out "hate" him but I don't really like him either, my reasons being:

The flirting femshep dialogue
Saying he isn't good enough for Miranda but is apparently good enough for Shepard (yeah right...)
Second guesses Shepard a lot, usually after a recruitment mission
The entire romance is bad... real bad...
Refering to femshep as a "priiiiiize"

I could see him as a decent friend/drinking buddy character, but Garrus already has the best friend role covered for me.

well...I haven't done his romance with a female char yet..but..wanna talk about being handled badly and un-fulfilling??

I've now done all 3 male romances..Jack, Miranda and Tali....

Miranda...BioWares "Weird Science Girl" is the least fulfilling of them....I don't particularly like Jack..but when my renegade shep romanced her..even Jack's romance had more real feeling to it....

Miranda's played out like we should have expected it considering her....design...sleezy..****ty....BioWare took their lust for her ridiculous character all the way (but at least they stayed consistant)...the romance basically goes into a "I wanna bang ya Miri" "I wanna bang you too Shepard" then they go have a "love scene" that basically amounts to a college rage-****.

THEY EVEN HAVE HER REVEAL THE MOST...for christs sake..everyone else just rolls around with their clothes on but the ****ing perverts at BioWare made it a point to have her.and ONLY HER...show more...it's laughably stupid and pathetic.

I like Miranda's character..kinda...her loyalty mission was pretty well done and the dialogue she has as she's "openning up" to you is pretty well done...up to the "I wanna screw" "I wanna screw too" dialogue that ends it.

****ing weak.  And if I worked for Bio I'd be embarrased at how she's obviously just office ****** material.

Jack..roll around on bed.....Tali...roll around on bed...both keep clothes on..no extra animation/textures/meshes to show HUGE BOOBIES DUUUH HUURRRR....

lol sorry but the obvious favortism for Miranda is just downright pathetic.

Yeah, but every drinking group needs the serious guy who tries to keep everyone else out of trouble. Shepard, Garrus, Grunt, and Jacob out for a night on the town would be hilarious.

I like Jacob... If he was a true Vanguard and had Biotic Charge to make that shotgun he carries useful, people would love him a lot more.
