Why do people hate Jacob?

I don't hate him. I just hate his dialogue options with my FemShep, after a point. I actually stopped talking to him because I was afraid I might romance him just by trying to be nice.



...And I simply didn't use him in my party much because I was usually using Garrus and Mordin.

Many people are thrown off by how Femshep acts towards him during their conversations, even when they aren't pursuing the romance path and decide to abandon talking to him altogether because they don't like the game 'dictating' how their character should interact in such a way. Then there's apparently the fact that his actual romance path is very shallow and un-fulfilling according to the people who have completed it. (I can't personally attest to that yet though.)

Personally I think he's a good friend regardless of what gender your Shepard is, and while he is rather 'boring' in the sense that he has no personal baggage I prefer him over Kaidan ten times over. (Before the Kaidan fangirls kill me, let me make it clear that I do like Kaidan. He's not my favorite character, but he's not someone I can hate either. Like Jacob I view him as good friend material. However out of the two I prefer Jacob.)

No killing here! We are reasonable enough to be okay with the fact that people don't always like Kaidan.

Admittedly, I haven't done the Jacob romance in game, but I did watch the vids on YouTube, and, well, others have said it better than I could. Terrible, terrible dialogue, on the edge of insulting even ("priiiiize", "Miranda deserves a better man than I", etc.). I really feel like BW let down Jacob in a way: he could have been theoretically quite interesting to talk to, with his Corsair past and all. IA with whoever compared him to Cernd - another character I only took in party for the personal quest.

The thing is a lot of people hate how female shepard sounds like a **** with him. Hell, I had to stop talking to him after that little episode. I think that they let Jacob down as a character he just to me seem flat. He always does second guess you in the game. >.<

This particular segment of the romance with Jacob doesn't seem too bad, I expected much worse. I'm also surprised that Jacob asks about femsheps' feelings. Although the conversation ended terrible. "Heh. Commander."

Maybe. As it stands he's a vanguard without the one ability that makes a vanguard a viable character class. He's almost useless at range, especially against opponents with shields or barriers and dies too easily in close quarters. Barrier helps a little but the recharge time is so long the shield boost is usually long gone before you can use another power. 

And of course, if you're a vanguard, he doesn't bring anything useful to the table. Pull? Got it. Incendiary ammo? Got it. Barrier? Useless.

Add to this that he always complain's about your decision's, he cant follow an order with out first saying he disagree's with it almost every time, and he shoves his face into every major decision in the game and insult's several people you recruit.

The only people he doesn't insult I think is Garrus, Mordin and Samara. He looked like he was going to be okay with Tali then he dropped that stupid "introduce yourself to the AI" line that made me want to punch his face in right there.

I like him as a character but his teeth glow and he apparently has no gums. Way too distracting.

Jacob is one of my favorite characters. Very set in his beliefs and obviously looks up to Shepard. He's completely devoted to doing what he believes is best, and in that he's unmovable. His only struggle is with finding his place, where he can simply do his job. Cerberus is the closest place, but he obviously doesn't like it there.



Definitely the Bro character. Very likable guy. I wasn't aware that the lack of major, crippling issues made a character inferior. Whatever.

Jacob was such a disappointment to me. In one of his very first conversations, he mentions that he used to be an alliance corsair. I immediately perked up and thought "SPACE PIRATE! yes please!!!" If anyone could woo me away from Kaiden it very well might be a dashing Sir Frances Freaking Drake, thank you very much!



But then he lapses into droning boring won't-talk-about-his-past-or-feelings-because-he's-not-a-whiner-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…… He's worse than simply boring, he's kind of an irritating frat-boy jock. I was never personally into jocks, and neither is my Shepard.



(And to those who say disliking him is based on race - I liked him at first sight, especially when he said he was a corsair. It was his personality that made me dislike him.)

Many people are thrown off by how Femshep acts towards him during their conversations, even when they aren't pursuing the romance path and decide to abandon talking to him altogether because they don't like the game 'dictating' how their character should interact in such a way. Then there's apparently the fact that his actual romance path is very shallow and un-fulfilling according to the people who have completed it. (I can't personally attest to that yet though.)

Personally I think he's a good friend regardless of what gender your Shepard is, and while he is rather 'boring' in the sense that he has no personal baggage I prefer him over Kaidan ten times over. (Before the Kaidan fangirls kill me, let me make it clear that I do like Kaidan. He's not my favorite character, but he's not someone I can hate either. Like Jacob I view him as good friend material. However out of the two I prefer Jacob.)

good explaination, i agree.........sheesh i just appreiate that all of the squadmates in ME2 have different personalities, i like all them......i even like jack.....and grunt too (prefer wrex tho) i think most people expect the "generic cardboard cut" characters and personalites thats why they **** so much and "hate" people like jack.......oh yeah because shes not some totatlly hot chick with hair and is a damsel in distress and acts all girly and needs a man to comfort her yat yat yat yat etc etc etc........and good example of "cardboard cut chars.....or over used personalities...boring ones" are the characters in Halo Wars

Jacob is a cool character. He's like your best buddy. But, his powers are way too weak to bring him into battle. It's hilarious that he's the only squad member that salutes you.
