I think Jacob is ok personality wise. He is probably the weakest one in battle, and that might be a big reason why people don't like him. Bioware should fix/change his weapon combo into heavy pistol/assault rifle, that would make him more useful in battle (besides no-one in the team has this combo, which is weird), and since he is a former marine he definitely should be able to use an assault rifle.

I never understood why Samara says "Events will either forge him into a great man or utterly destroy him."

Where the hell did you get that idea, Samara?

like father like son?

It's just strange because what has Jacob done or said that would make Samara even consider that he has the potential to be great? True, events utterly destroyed his father, but there was nothing great about him either.

because thats the only options for him Cerberus only recruits the best to begin with Jacob wcouldent be sent on the mission if he wasent apprently Good so he can either go down or up i think its a pretty safe assumption that Samara was just trying to sound Cryptic and mystical.
Look at everyone else
Thane master assasin
Garrius and his crazy ass stunt on Omega
Mordin super genious
Miranda Genetic wonder child
Jack One of the most powerful biotics known
Samara crazy ass justicar
Tali Expert Quarian scientist great with tech
Legion most advanced geth platform currently known
Mr Massani Guy survived a bullet to the face
Grunt genetic super korgan
when you compare jacob too these guys hes pretty lame sounding but i think the point is that hes meant to be on par with them =/

Anyone from /v/ here? No. I think he is OK, I guess. Had a good loyalty mission.

The fact that his writer forgot one crucial point. Characterisation.

I quite liked Jacob, though wasn't particularly enamoured by his character. Perhaps this is the point. This is a Bioware game, characters that you aren't glued to because of the lack of the "complex tapestry of catharsis" you're sucked into probably wont fare very well with the audience. Perhaps the writers set themselves such a benchmark that any character displaying anything less than a strong emotive dynamic is written off as crap.

For all intents and purposes he wasn't that bad, perhaps his issues with his father could have been elaborated and worked upon to make a slightly edgier individual. But i liked him.

because he and Grunt are basically the same except that grunt's armor and health are twice as poweful.

Sadly, yes... Otherwise I rather liked him as a friend to my male Shepard. Same Alliance military background, a human perspective... He's the only character that isn't "looking up" to Shepard. He shows more self-confidence than the others and isn't fooling himself.

That said, I had him dusting the weapons locker for nearly all the missions...

Well, he did save the Council from the Batarains that one time. Physically, it was single-handed with Miranda assisting with intel and all of that.  And he was an Alliance Corsair... the game doesn't elaborate on the qualifications membership neccesitates, nor the prestige it brings, but i'm assuming its a somewhere around N7 level.
You can also see him headshot that one mech rather easily.

I think if they had just made him former N7 it would've done a lot for his character.

I've always liked Jacob. As I said in another post, he seems like one of the only non ME1 characters that has his back from the start.

I don't "hate" Jacob. I just really, really don't like him. He's off putting and seems like he's trying to hard to fit in to a place he doesn't belong. he's seems to be about as useful as an electric generator in an amish villiage. He sees Shep as a hero/god and does his best to suck up. it's annoying. He's the kind of character you could send on a solo suicide mission and know that the job would get done, but he would not return - and you would still be okay with it.

I purposly didn't do his loyalty mission.

I could see him as a decent friend/drinking buddy character, but Garrus already has the best friend role covered for me.

Garrus is my Chewie and Tali is my Leia

I don't hate Jacob. Actually he is one of the characters I trusted from the moment I met him. He is trust worthy, doesn't hide anything and isn't so fanatically loyal to Cerberus, like Miranda was at the beginnig. Plus I love his Cerberus suit, actually I like all Cerberus outfits: Jacob, Miranda and Shepard casual.

The sole reason for my disliking of him, are the dialogues. You can't play a FemShep without flirting, very annoying. He seemed like a good guy though...

Bioware gives us a well adjusted honorable character who is a perfect fit for the canon Shepards crew and it seems everyone hates him. Why?

What I don't like about him is that whenever you talk to him he never really has any back story. Being a Corsair? ''Too much red tape, I quit''. Alliance? ''Too much red tape. I quit." Cerebus? "They get stuff done. Don't trust TIM" His dad, ''He was a good man. This ain't mah Dad." Miranda, "Don't wanta talk about it."

Thrilling stuff...*yawn*.

Not saying he needs to be a drama queen but SOME type of back story would be more interesting. I mean even Zaeed has some tales about his past to share.

And his reaction to FemShep is disgusting. :(

He's powers are decent when I'm playing an infiltrator, but seem limited compared to Thane or Miranda.

I also hated Miranda for the same reasons. Both characters show up and immediately start ordering you around and neither ever makes the slightest effort to gain your trust. The other new characters refrained from loudly arguing with you about every decision every thirty minutes and by that alone become far more tolerable.

Hell, neither the lawful good/obsessive justicar or the battlemaster krogan who practically runs his entire planet try to tell you want to do as much as they do.

Also, everything Jacob does gameplay-wise is done better by other characters.

Jacob's okay. Just dull. I keep on forgetting about him.

Still, I'd quite like to see him back in ME3, if not as a party member - he's still got plenty of room for development, for one thing. I have to assume he has hidden depths, since he doesn't have much in the way of visible shallows. He's most interesting in ME2 when he acts as a foil to Miranda. Maybe ME3 could put him in a position where he isn't just following orders, has a chance to show some initiative...

He's a guy I'd like in real life because he's actually normal and sane. In a fictional story you want something else.

I don't like jacob because he's boring and basically useless in combat, when compared with your other options

but that's just my opinion

As a female I have the same problem with all the dialogue options when playing FemShep...Sleazeeeeeee. As a character I liked who they were trying to make him into but yeah I was a bit bored. Maybe when I play more of my MaleShep run he will seem more interesting.

Also anyone think they should have switched the renegade and neutral option with his father. I always let the hunters have their way with him personally.

He's just boring..and he keeps telling me he ain't into talking. Your commander comes over to talk...you talk. Other then that sort of goofy answer - he just didn't seem as interesting as all the other characters.
