I don't hate him but I hate how I can't talk to him when playing femshep. I only talked to him for his loyalty mission, and once I started recruiting, he became useless in my squad.

Because turning into a wolf does not make you a werewolf.

Ugh.  This.  She gets all ****ty for some reason.  I'm sure the voice director wanted this, but come on.  Besides this, Jacob was perhaps the most useless teammate.  In terms of personality, he reminded me too much of boring Kaidan--the safe, dependable soldier.  Blah.  I admit, his private nature was intriguing for a bit, but his super-seriousness-all-the-time got annoying after awhile.  He actually made me flash on The Joker from Batman.  I wanted a dialogue option of, "Why so serious?" lol

EDIT:  Apparently I cannot type 's l u t t y'  -.-

Jacob's okay. Just dull. I keep on forgetting about him.

Still, I'd quite like to see him back in ME3, if not as a party member - he's still got plenty of room for development, for one thing. I have to assume he has hidden depths, since he doesn't have much in the way of visible shallows. He's most interesting in ME2 when he acts as a foil to Miranda. Maybe ME3 could put him in a position where he isn't just following orders, has a chance to show some initiative...

Good points.
I actually liked Jacob at the very start of the game, when he acted as a foil to Miranda. But now I can't help but keep forgetting about him.

Three words: token black guy

I don't know how they could have made a more generic "soft spoken black guy" soldier stereo type. It seems that no one really hates him, the character is just very short on creativity compared to the other characters in the game.

He's a mystery to me. Why would they take a character that is supposed to be one of the main supporting cast and make him so dull? Maybe if he were just another teammate I could understand but he's supposed to be a romance option for female shep. I think they should have considered giving him a role that was more interesting. He's just too dry and boring and the only time they make him say anything is to complain. He's even boring in combat. If you play as a vanguard, you'll never use him, if you play as an infiltrator, you'll take grunt over him every time, if you play as a soldier you'll never notice him and if you play as any of the support classes, you'll want to hang with Zaeed and Garrus. He's just sort of meh. Kaiden was the same way. I never used him.

Pull is redonkulous in combat: +100% damage + 50% snipe + head shot... are you kidding? Insta death on ANY difficulty.

As for his arc, he's a soldier, he does his duty. He's simple guy. Not everyone can be Samara or Mordin. He's got a moral center and solid sense of right and wrong... unlike Miranda for example. (Mostly) Stable characters tend to be (mostly) drama free. RPG tend to cultivate the drama.

Lol, I still do not understand why do people keep bringing Jacob's race up. It has nothing to do with the feelings (or lack thereof) this character inspires.

Well in time on these forums I've found that a lot of Mass Effect fans are idiots with very shallow reasoning abilities. So that would explain it. Same reason they hated Kaidan, really.

I don't see it that way.  Lots of people who like Kaidan don't like Jacob.  Moreover, people have given many reasons for disliking Jacob - or, more properly, for disliking *interacting* with Jacob - that are based on hard, solid facts.

1) Jacob says Miranda's too good for him, but FemShep is supposed to settle for him.
2) Jacob calls FemShep a "prize."
3) The dialogue between them makes FemShep sound really... desperate.
4) His response when he has no new personal chat is quite stand-offish.

All of this is quite inconsistent.  It's like he and Shep are fighting for who gets to objectify the other more...  Except for when he comes across as completely uninterested.  It is baffling.  And I do not like it.

Of course, that's all romance stuff.  Otherwise, I found him unspectacular - don't love, but don't hate.  But, good grief, the romance...  o.O

That's not what he meant when he said Miranda requires a better man than him.   I've used this line myself when describing an ex.

When you hear a guy say something like that, what we're actually saying is that a "better man" would be able overlook that particular woman's BS and complexity.  A better man would be able to forgive all of her foolishness and nonsense.

We're not saying we don't deserve her.

As for Jacob, I liked him but found him unusable in most of ME2's more intense combat situations.   It's like Tali, I have no idea what Bioware was thinking when they came up with her powers and skill set for ME2.   That little Quarian used to walk over the corpses of Geth Armatures and Colossus', now she can barely hold her own in a fight.

Jacob doesn't drop like Tali does in a fight, but he doesn't make things any easier.  I will say this about him.......he does duck into cover alot better than the other squad members.

His loyalty quest is totally jacked up.  I didn't mind taking down the mechs, but the whole time I was advancing up that hill towards his father, I was wondering why we weren't using some kind gas grenade like we used on Zhu's Hope colony.  Then I remembered,  Bioware gutted the grenades.   So we had no choice but to gun these poor folks down.

Neural decay, but they can all still shoot!!!! LMAO!    :P

I thought after the suicide run was over Jacob would suggest we go to the bar on the Citadel, throw back a few drinks and his character would finally unwind a bit.  I took him and Miranda to the bar and nothing happened.    And that pretty much sums up Jacob, Bioware just didn't do enough with him to  keep gamers interested.

In many ways, Jacob is like Garrus was in ME1.   But I'm aware that Bioware was probably trying to be respectful by avoiding stereotypes and not turning Jacob into the typical  "brotha with an attitude"    I liked how Jacob greeted everyone who came on board and it's interesting how Jack thought Jacob didn't know who his was, while a wiser Samara thought better of him.

Pretty much mirrors the views most in here have on Jacob.

I don't hate Jacob at all, I just think he should be working the counter at a Taco Bell rather than fighting bad guys out in space.

He'd be my wingman anytime Garrus was sick or something

Less hate and more... apathy. For me anyways.

And my FemSheps stay well away from him as he's clearly sprayed some kind of pheromonal thing around to make them behave like that. The creep.

It's more that he starts out as a potentially interesting character, and then about halfway through his loyalty mission he just kind of peters off into an "average guy" parody. The problems he has with Cerberus are never really developed, he makes halfassed negative remarks all the time, but there's nothing that actually gets him angry, or excited, or interested.

I liked Kaidan better. He may have not been very emotive, but at least he felt like a real character.

Why do people hate Jacob? It's the abs!...

Seriously, I think BioWare has to invest on the man's carisma. Maybe ME3 can achieve this by introducing more interaction between crew members, with some personality differences that bring consequence to the game - as in the Jack vs Miranda situation. The fact that ME3 will see a come back of certain ME1 characters may prove relevant. I wonder what interesting dynamics may arise from the way they will deal with eachother. For example, Jacob will probably have a good relation with Ashley/Kaiden, and Liara. But I don't see Ashley or Liara dealing well with Miranda at all. And will Shepard grow closer to the Alliance, or stick to Cerberus, or go rogue all the way? And how will that affect the loyalty of your crew members.

I know I'm derailing a bit, but there's a lot of room for progression for these characters, so I'm curious to see how they evolve in the future, including Jacob.

In my very first run, I thought he was allright, spoke to hima lot and liked him...

But then...

His arsy arrogant and smarmy attitude to almost everyone really put me off him. he has a go at Thane for no reason, purposly tried to rile Tali when she joins, and his overlal attitude stinks....which Is why i do not like him :)

Now I actually liked that Jacob met everyone at the door so to speak.   This isn't some warm and fuzzy group of soldiers that TIM had Shepard recruiting.  These are rogues, assassins, mercenaries and Geth.   I liked that he sized up everyone who came on board.
