Personally I like Jacob...I did his romance with my fem-shep, yes some of his lines are funny but, he is the only person who asks your fem-shep if she needs to vent. None of the other guys does that. If you direct Jacob more he is solid in a fight.

I liked Jacob, he just seemed a little tight lipped and reserved.

Also, I don't think that he intentionally tried to ****** off Tali, he's just not a people person.

Hopefully, if Bioware releases a character development DLC they'll develop on Jacob's backstory a little. He has a lot of potential, steady and reliable shouldn't have to mean boring.

Meh, I liked Jacob, but he caught me off-guard. When I first met him, I thought he was going to fill the 'Trask Ulgo' or disposable party member role. He just didn't come off as that important when we first met.

I liked Jacob, actually, though it'd be nice to have a member of your crew without deep-seated daddy issues. (I guess Samara doesn't have them, but she's a heartless killer... so...)

In my opinion Jacob doesn't have a very interesting character and feels too much like the obligatory black guy who is there to compensate for the (sadly) smaller role of Captain Anderson.

He's a quitter and a bore, with no strong convictions to make me like him or hate him. He's on the Normandy by accident.

I'd like to think it's because everyone is jealous of him, he was the one picked to go on an adventure to save the galaxy with Commander Shepard! Hell, I'd be jealous of him.

Jacob is a good bro character for a male shepard, but he could have been more interesting. First of all, they could have delved into his corsair past and had him relay some crazy stories about being a space pirate. He could have also spoken more about you know, saving the citadel from an epidemic.

Other than a few good parts, his romance was really bad. I have no idea what Bioware was thinking when they made femshep sound like that and come on to him like that. Is it inconceivable that they could be friends first and then start developing feelings? Instead of femshep wanting to jump on him, and him being all awkward and then treating her as a priiize.

In addition, his use in combat...give him assault rifles like he used in ME galaxy. Literally the only "offensive" thing he can do is pull things, which becomes useless if the enemy has barriers, shields, and maybe armor.

If you want Jacob to fight at range, try making him use the carnifex.

It's hardly ideal, but if you're just using him for squad incendiary and pull 1 (which I was), then it's ok.

Jacob is the weakest biotic in the game, his power/skill set is extremely lame.  It's almost like Bioware couldn't figure out if they wanted him to be a solider or a biotic and instead decided on neither.

Since he has no real offensive abilities, Jacob should have had an ME1 power like stasis.   And making Barrier his unlockable was a little ridiculous.  You would think that any biotic would have that ability from the start.  What am I saying?  Even Adepts don't have Barrier anymore in ME2.

I neither like or dislike Jacob. I do think however his character could have been fleshed out better. Plus he has to the be the ugliest guy in the whole of ME2. I don't think bioware did his character or looks any favours.

I don't play femshep so I cannot comment personally on the romance. However have seen youtube videos of some of the dialogue and it made me cringe!

I have no opinion on Jacob although the videos of the romance on YouTube with Fem-Shep are painful especially when players have Thane and Garrus to choose to romance. ("But the priiiize" Really?). I always play as male Shep because I find it more engaging to play as guy since I am one but Jacob is just generic and boring.

I don't mind him with my male Shepard, but he's not very useful or interesting either.

Why the FemShep players dislike him is very easy to see.

When I played my FemShep every line she talked to him soundet desperate. Very desperate, like the metatext behind every sentence was the need for sex. An example:

"So you are concerned about working with with Cerberus? (Ah, yeah and please fück me, will you?)"

That is HORRIBLY annoying, even for a male player.

Well in time on these forums I've found that a lot of Mass Effect fans are idiots with very shallow reasoning abilities. So that would explain it. Same reason they hated Kaidan, really.

It was even more stupid with kaidan."He is carth".
That was it.

Personally, I hate the fact that I can't have a decent conversation with the guy without him or I coming off as a hormonally crazed freak. He might be better on a manshep, but I'll never know, because manshep just doesn't exist in my ME universe.

Bad writing is primarily the reason I don't like him. And he isn't all that great in a fight either.

"The priiiiiize" Someone shoot me in the face, death is better than having to listen to that. At least I'm not forced to.

No one hates him it's just that he doesn't feel like he's useful as a party member. he's cool in the way that Joker or Kelly are cool but when going down to the planet unless you are going for specific plot based squad makeup there's no reason to ever bring him instead of someone else.  (Unless you're an infiltrator and you want Squad Inferno Ammo and don't want to bring Grunt for some reason)

You nerf grunt if you did this.Either he dont have full fortification or pureblood.Grunts role is a tank.Jacob is a better source for squad inferno.

He's not that deserving of hate... In contrast he's just so bland. He has to compete with

- Genetically engineered 'superwoman'

- Master Assassin

- Test tube grown super soldier

- Thousand year old Paladin

- Old squad mate & mysterious love interest

- Crazy powerful biotic prisoner

- Brilliant & extremely eccentric scientist

- Battle hardened Merc

- Garrus!

- A 'sentient' Geth

Who is Jacob in comparison? A soldier. As mentioned by TIM (who doesn't make many mistakes, I'd wager), a very capable one. He's just not very interesting. He's the straight guy. The foil. People 'hate' him because he's so very normal.

I like Jacob. He and my male Shepard got along well.

The backlash is partly because of his poorly-written romance with FemShep, and partly because a lot of people don't think he's very useful in a fight.

Also, apparently it's a bad thing to be one of the only crewmembers with his head on straight.

I didn't notice this thread before, but this is the best answer (on page 1 even). The first time Jacob did his "Feeling good, ready for anything. We live, we get loud and spill drinks on the Citadel" speech and bro-hug Shepard I knew I liked the dude. Plus I enjoy his loyalty mission more than most.

The big issue was that female gamers didn't like being 'forced' to want Jacob. Romancing him didn't feel like a choice as it did with the other LI's as no matter what you talked about, femshep had that horrid flirty tone whenever she spoke to him. It was like the game was ASSuming that all the ladies would want to end up with him , it was the obvious preference that annoyed the hell out of me. She should have sounded completely neutral like maleshep unless you picked the flirty dialogues, you know, like ALL THE OTHER LI'S.

I was also annoyed that he was the only guy that had post-mission dialogue, he was the only one that confirmed he wanted to continue the relationship. Meanwhile, Thane and Garrus were still praying or calibrating guns as if nothing happened. So not only did the flirtation feel forced on the femshep players, we also felt punished for not choosing Jacob as he was the only one to get that dialogue.
