**Simplified Version**

UPDATE (4/26): It's a been a long time since I've updated this -- the replies may be outdated. However, modding the save file for this is now much easier to do (thanks to IoCaster's and Ieldra2's help). Also, I don't have an XBox, but now that save files are moddable on the console this MAY be possible on both platforms.

Posted Image

NOTE 1: Despite the name, this has NOTHING to do with my other thread, The Worst Possible Playthrough for Import in ME3

NOTE 2: This is not just making the other characters selectable in the squad screen and skipping their recruitment - this enables players to have ALL recruitment missions and the Reaper IFF available immediately after Freedom's Progress.

After Freedom's Progress, you may choose to:
-Fully recruit Tali, Thane, Samara or Legion before the others
-Visit Liara or Wrex with Illium auto-unlocked, and Tuchanka unlocked after recruiting Mordin
-Get the Reaper IFF, and CHOOSE when to install it
-Start a loyalty mission right after doing a single mission with the squad

Posted Image

The only drawback is that if you get the Reaper IFF and recruit Legion, the Collector questline will skip automatically to the Normandy invasion after recruiting 2-4 characters. I have included a fix for this in the 2nd post. This fix requires you to hex edit the file. Onto the simplified version...

---------------------------------------------------

It took a lot longer than I expected to find something so simple (and IoCaster's help has made it even simpler). To enable Recruit Any Squadmate mode, you need two things:

1. Gibbed Save Game Editor
2. Hex Editor (for Legion)

After finishing Freedom's Progress and boarding the Normandy, open the save you want to change in Gibbed's Save File Editor. Go to Plot --> Henchman --> Flags and check two boxes:
1. Miranda in alternate appearance
2. Jacob in alternate appearance

Posted Image

Save the file and load it up in your game. If it works, the game will automatically give you the "Retrain Powers" upgrade and unlock the ENTIRE galaxy map. If you want to recruit Legion first, you will have to hex edit the file twice -- once for disabling the IFF and once for enabling it -- as shown in the 2nd post:

If you don't want to recruit Legion until after the Disabled Collector Vessel, ignore the second post.

Enabling Horizon
**Do this right before you want to trigger Horizon**

-NOTE: This will temporarily lock you out of the rest of the galaxy map and still forces you to recruit the original 4 - Jack, Mordin, Grunt and Archangel (I may try to find a way around this eventually).

-This can be done before you finish recruiting the 4 or right after. Go to Gibbed's Save File Editor, to Plot --> Henchman --> Flags, UNCHECK Miranda's alternate appearance (keeping Jacob's checked). This locks the galaxy map again and enables the trigger for Horizon.

Enabling Disabled Collector Vessel
**Do this right before you want to trigger Disabled Collector Vessel**

NOTE: According to Ieldra2:

"If you enable the Collector Ship mission, the 5-mission counter is apparently set to 0 (or rather, it is probably not used at all unless the Collector Ship mission is enabled). Which means, you must complete five missions after enabling the Collector ship mission to get it triggered."

So, make sure you have at least 8 squadmates and leave five missions available in order to trigger it:

-Go to Gibbed's Save File Editor, to Plot --> Henchman --> Flags, CHECK Miranda's alternate appearance and UNCHECK Jacob's alternate appearance. This enables the Disabled Collector Vessel mission.

Posted Image

After that, the game should run normally. While this isn't how the game was released, this is how the game would have been released if it were PC-only, without the required disc splitting on the console. It may require extra work, but it beats being forced to recruit Jack, Mordin, Grunt and Archangel before the rest....

**SKIP IF YOU DON'T WANT LEGION FIRST**

Recruiting Legion early messes up the main Collector questline - here is how to adjust for that (multiple steps required!)

After you recruit Legion, the game forces you to take the IFF. Believe me, it does - I tried teleporting to the Reaper Core immediately and the game still assumed I picked it up. Thus, the first step:

Preventing the Reaper IFF from installing after recruiting Legion

-There are two values that you need to change: One controls the IFF 2-mission countdown, the other controls the main Stop the Collectors quest. The Stop the Collectors quest relies solely on the list itself ('Assemble the Team') and not the mission description on the right side.

A. IFF countdown - Search for a text string called "None.É" (quotes not included). Starting from the N, skip an A6 amount of blocks (166 blocks in decimal format - sorry, there's no similar starting area for other save files!). The few blocks before it should look something similar to E4 84 0E (ignore this even if different). The next block is 01 (IFF installing), switch it to 00 to disable it:

Click for Image

B. Stop the Collectors mission - We're not finished yet, we still need to modify the mission log. Do a search for 7E 14 00 00 or 9A 18 00 00. That 7E 14 is actually one quest ID in reverse (the real ID is 14 7E = 5246, which I believe is the Prologue quest). The list after that is all the quest IDs currently in your mission log. The important part we want is BEFORE that, which keeps track of your quest progress in the order that you receive them:

Click for Image

WARNING: Downloading the Kasumi DLC may have changed the quest log slightly so that the Stop the Collectors quest is no longer listed under "0A" but "0C" (or possibly "0B"). That means you'll be editing the line before 0D now. According to Ieldra2:

"My current game the Stop the Collectors mission you need to adjust after recruiting Legion early has an ID of "OC", not "OA". I suspect this is because Zaeed's and Kasumi's recruitment missions are inserted before. You can identify the correct mission by the "05 00 00 00" sequence at the end. Keep an unedited save in case you forget the ID."

For my save file - and some others - the Stop the Collectors quest is listed under 0A (10th Quest) and then has a whole bunch of zeroes after it until 0B. The numbers coincide with the mission progress - as you can see, there's a 05 00 00 near the end, which tells the game to skip from Assembling the Team to the IFF installation. Copy and paste this string, overwriting 0A up until before 0B and changing the file size:
0A 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 --(before 0B)

Click for Image

SAVE THE FILE, AND THEN OPEN/SAVE IN GIBBED'S SAVE EDITOR TO RENEW THE FILE CHECKSUM (The game will detect it as corrupt otherwise)

This changes it back to "Assemble Your Team" and Kelly won't start jabbering about missions you haven't done yet. You can now play until you want to enable Horizon yourself.

---------------------------------------------------

Enabling Reaper IFF Installation/Normandy Abduction
*Do this once you're ready to have the Normandy crew abducted, which is any time after you've completed the Disabled Collector Vessel mission, preferably.*

-NOTE: I believe this requires you to do at least 2 missions before you can trigger it, but I'm not sure. Two parts, involving the same places from the last hex edit:

A. IFF countdown - None.É area, starting from N, skip A6 amount of blocks (166 blocks in decimal format). The next block will probably say '40', switch it back to 01 to install it:

Click for Image

B. Stop the Collectors mission - By now, your mission IDs and progress list in the file should be ridiculously filled with zeroes (look where the 7E 14 is at the bottom in comparison now). Do a search for 0A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 to make life easier.

Click for Image

The 05 that comes after that (and the 04 at the end before 0B) is essentially saying "Go get the Reaper IFF" even after you already completed it. Time to change that. Copy and paste this string over 0A and before 0B:
0A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 05 00 00 00

Click for Image

SAVE THE FILE, AND THEN OPEN/SAVE IN GIBBED'S SAVE EDITOR TO RENEW THE FILE CHECKSUM (The game will detect it as corrupt otherwise)

That should trigger the Reaper IFF installation almost immediately (or with 2 missions done). You can now go through the Omega-4 relay after this and finish the game normally.

**SKIP THIS SECTION IF YOU DON'T WANT LEGION FIRST**

After the Reaper IFF installed with only 6 squadmates on my crew, I decided to see how I would fare going into the Omega-4 relay without any upgrades.

As a result:
No Armor Upgrade - Samara dies by laser beam (no Jack)
No Shield Upgrade - Thane dies in the engine room
No Weapon Upgrade - Legion gets impaled (another hole?)

It is interesting to note that there is voice recording for EDI to say that Samara died after recording her EKG, which suggests that there is full voice recorded, all the way up to the final mission, for an 'any squadmate recruitment' playthrough.

The result of the carnage was three people left on my team:

My 'Team'

I gave Tali the difficult job of leading a Fire Team consisting of one person, and sent Jacob into the vents. I selected Miranda as my (only) squadmate and... the game crashed.

It's weird, quite a few people mentioned this option would be difficult to implement, yet it really isn't.

I am disapointed in BioWare's inability to do this themselves, and instead do extra work to hamper its implimentation.

yup, i figured this would take months of modding and effort. i am ecstatic to see it available so soon.

It actually took me hours of looking through the Save Game Editor (which is incomplete) and started with adding the specific quest IDs and trackers. When that didn't work (I had the quests, but no way to get there) -- I then tried teleporting to the hub cities (Thane/Samara), but that didn't help either.

It took me a while to narrow down the exact bits you need to change to modify the galaxy map, and it seems that learning Retrain Powers early enables the expansion of it. I found out that because of that, only one single hex edit needed to be made (with Gibbed Save Game editor re-saving it to prevent it from treating the file as corrupted).

I still haven't completed a full playthrough yet - I found out that the game skips Horizon and the Collector Vessel if you do the Reaper IFF quest first, but I still think there's a way to recruit Legion and get Horizon/Vessel at the same time.

Working on Collector data; have ruled out artificially intelligent virus. Unless it's very intelligent, and toying with me! Hmm, tests...

Thanks for this Ecael, I was looking for a way to do this. And thanks for the pictures, I have zero experience editing stuff like this so it's nice to have a good reference.

Consider this thread bookmarked (cuz it is).

The numbered line is different depending on the save file.

It's after all the text about SFX_(Weapons), SFX_LoyaltyRecruitment and SFX_ContentInventory.

I opened my gave game (right after I gain control of shepard after getting on the normandy. I found '4E 6F 6E 65 00 C9' which corresponds to None.É

I then selected the 4E cell (corresponding to N in None) and then hit the -> arrow key thirty times and changed the 00 there to 03. Saved the file, opened with the savegame editor, re-saved, opened the game but no change on the galaxy map. Could this be different for every save game? Also, I noticed in your screenshot that the 03 was not 30 hexes away, but actually more like 49 hexes away. I tried this too, but no change.

I'll wait for your reply! Please post a savegame too if you can!

Thanks

Ack! I just realized - I meant 30 blocks in hex (if your hex editor counts length). Converted to decimal it's 48 blocks.

The Horizon mission usually appears after picking up Archangel, Jack, Mordin and Grunt, right? I wonder the game engine counts it as four missions after getting the Normandy, or if you have to complete those specific dossier missions. Will have to try.

Been trying to find something in the save file to allow me to revert the Collector missions back to Horizon/Vessel after recruiting Legion, but nothing so far.

Even tried overwriting the Reaper IFF mission with the Krogan Sushi assignment and editing the quest progress in Stop the Collectors, but neither worked.
