Just had to jump in and ask for help...

I've been trying to do the hex edit thing, but when I search for None.É, the editor just pops up a "Can't find None.É" message. I've loaded most of my saves (both modified in the Gibbed editor and unmodified) and searched for it, and got the same result each time.

Either I'm doing something horribly wrong, or None.É just doesn't exist in any of my saves... O_o

That problem seems to occur in about a third of the saves I've looked through, and I have no idea why.

The list of weapons that precedes that None.E should be in all saves, so compensating by starting from there and going 9 blocks further (instead of A6, do AF) should do the trick.

Ah, thanks. I tried this and...well, I must be looking at the wrong block or something. I found two lists of weapons, but neither of them look right. If I remember correctly, I should see a "01" at the end of the highlighted blocks, but...

Well, here's a screenshot of each:

img683.imageshack.us/img683/1206/hex1.jpg

In that one, there's a "None," but it doesn't have the weird E after it. The next number after the highlighted area is 61.

img338.imageshack.us/img338/7388/hex2k.jpg

For some reason, this one has "None" with a weird I after it. At first I thought this one would work, but the number after it is "00"...

Sorry if I'm being a pain in the ass, but this stuff zIps right over my head. I can do okay when putting a computer together, but looking at endless blocks of numbers like this...I'd have a better chance at translating Vorlon into English.

Is that from an X-Box 360 save file?

I haven't figured out where to edit on those files - and I don't know why the face code for Shepard is placed where the Reaper IFF trigger is supposed to be.

Oops, sorry, I forgot to mention that. It's the PC version.

So the codes aren't even where they're supposed to be? That's pretty typical of how my luck usually works, actually.

Hmm...I wonder, would it make any difference if the hex editing is done before or after using the Gibbed editor? This one was Gibbed first. But then, I ran into the same problem in several unmodified saves...

True. My brain kind of folds in on itself every time I look at all those numbers.

Well, you have to use Gibbed Save Editor to unlock it in the first place. But still, it's surprising that your file looks like that from the PC - the only time I've seen the face code in that location was in an X-Box 360 save.

Two more things I can think of:
1. Did you recruit Legion first and foremost after Freedom's Progress before you started any hex editing?

2. What version of Gibbed's Save Editor do you have?

Yikes. Well, at least my problem is...unique. ;)

Anyway, to answer your questions...

1. I finished Freedom's Progress, returned to the Normandy, and quick-saved after the cutscene showing the armor and weapons lockers, galaxy map, etc. Then I exited the game, fired up the Gibbed editor and unlocked all recruitment missions, and saved it. Then I opened the file in a hex editor, couldn't find None.É, and exited without saving. I didn't want to mess around with anything when I had no idea where to start.

2. It's version 1.0.0.25

[Edit: That's according to the info in Properties. If I'm not mistaken, it's also called "Rev25"...]

You don't need to do any hex editing unless you want Legion first, and if so, you have to complete the Reaper IFF before that.

My old method actually required a lot more hex, but IoCaster found a neat trick in the save editor that did the same thing.

That's what I was going for. I wanted to get Legion and Tali first. Seeing them working together always amuses the hell out of me. :D

I just re-read the thread and found the trick you mentioned. Somehow I missed it the first time.

Thanks for the help.

Hmm ok so if I just get Tali first and then Legion second, I have to do no hex editing? What I did before was get legion first + skip hex editing but then my crew either dies since I still need to build the team or I go in and the game crashes since I didn't have 2 ppl to select on my team.

If you get Legion early (as in, before Horizon/Disabled Collector Vessel), but you still want to do those two missions, you'll have to hex edit.

I had to dump the play through. I had done everyone's recruitment and loyalty mission (apart from Legion, I never visited the Reaper) prior to even Horizon. Following Horizon (with at least one intended recruit or Tali), I tried to then enable the disabled collector vessel.

Unfortunately my quest log still had progression of the collector quest at 'recruit more guys from tim's new dossiers'. The gibbed flag switch for alternate appearances didn't work, I would still get the regular star map you would expect following Horizon, but as I had already recruited everyone and they where all loyal, I was stuck.

I loaded a game hours prior to Horizon, where I had not yet recruited Jack, and applied the gibbed flag switch once more for the damaged collector vessel. It worked.

In the end I just gave up on the play-through fearing still more **** ups due to my unexpected play style, and hating the random out of sequence banter from ship mates and conversations (I accidentally interrogated Anderson about Kaiden on Horizon on my first visit to the Citadel).

I'm sure there's folks out there that enjoy recruiting their favourites early on, but the few extra dialogue lines just aren't worth me risking it again. It was nice to hear Samara's version of pretty much exactly what Garrus says when freeing Jack from prison but I'll just play in order from now on.

The triggers for Horizon and the Collector Vessel are reliant on Miranda and Jacob's alternate appearance plot flags (as shown in the guide), and thus reliant on their loyalty missions.

Doing either of those very early may have altered the plot states permanently.

After freedom's progress, I followed the guide and ticked both Jacob and Miranda's alt appearance flags.  Then set about recruiting and doing all loyalties, but not yet recruiting Jack or Legion.  After recruiting Jack and doing her loyalty quest, I then decided to wrap up the main quest and triggered Horizon.  Did the bad runs with Samara and Thane and then a good one with Tali and Miranda.

Trying to then do the gibbed flags to start the collector mission would not work now.

So I reverted to the save right before Jack's recruitment.  Keep in mind, everyone else is recruited and loyal, including Jacob and Miranda at this point.  I had also not yet done Horizon either.  I used gibbed to set the flags for the collector mission and it worked.

At a guess, resolving the Jack/Miranda fight with the paragon option following the completion of both their loyalty quests, sets a flag that interferes with the gibbed flags for the collector vessel trigger. Having Miranda and Jacob loyal early doesn't seem to matter.  Unfortunately I deleted the character when I gave up on it.  It has me curious though, I'll probably try again with another character now, grab Jack early, do her loyalty as well as Miranda and try to trigger the collector mission again...

Ah - thanks for the correction. That makes much more sense.

:police:

Weird how the argument plot flags override the loyalty ones. I was half-expecting that meeting Wrex or Liara after Freedom's Progress would mess up the plot flags, but nothing changed as a result.

Hmm would it work if I asked for the different version of the file that you edit? (coalesced?)

You don't edit the coalseced.ini, you edit the save file.

The Reaper IFF obtained/enabled information is stored there, after all (and that's the biggest problem with recruiting Legion first).

Legion has some amazing dialogue for the early recruitment missions.

Remember though, Thane, Samara and Legion do not have Horizon dialogue - if you bring 2 of those 3 to Horizon, the game will crash.

oh. that is good to know.

Actually I only bring him for certain missions. Most of the time I mod him out, Because after 1 or 2, the "a house divided" quest from him comes up, and that rubs me the wrong way, I dont want that to cause problems later.

I mod him in to go into a mission, mod him out do some side missions. Then when I am ready to keep going, I mod him back in for main recruitments.

but yes he has so kool dialogue.

I love when I tell Legion to take care of Garrus in Omega.

"garrus:.....that is....an interesting choice, but I'll get any help I can get I guess"

Garrus and I blew up geth left and right 2 years ago, and now one is going to watch his back....so funny.

It's fine to bring 1 of the 3 (Legion, Samara, Thane) as the other squadmate will cover both dialogue lines, meaning they'll argue with themselves.

If you bring 2 of those, however, neither will have anything to say and it will cause the game to bug out.

Tali does have dialogue on Horizon.
