Fobok, you're a genius! Works fine with the x86 version now. Running Vista x64 SP2 here with a 4870 - are other people having the problem with similar setups?
Someone in this thread got authentication problems with his disc after installing this MS Update, so I haven't bothered to install it. I'm reinstalling the game and will patch the game after the patch has been patched.

I also got it to work by going to ProgramFiles/DragonAge/bin_ship and then double clicking on either daorigins.exe or the shortcut labeled DAOriginsLauncher-MCE if this works for you a temporary fix could be to copy either one and paste a shortcut on your desktop or wherever you want to launch the game from
Tried this and still no go for me.

EDIT: Note that I really didn't have to copy my Addins-directory, because the program started to re-download the DLCs anyway.

I had issues playing the game, after the splash screen it would crash and say the game stopped working. ...
The problems you've mentioned doesn't seem to have much or anything to do with the startup problems which have been discussed here (we can't even get to the start screens). Perhaps there are other threads here related to crash-problems.

Well, the update to Visual C++ does make the game work if you're having problems with launching it. The icon problem with the games explorer isn't working no matter what you do. I'm guessing they updated the .dll file for the GDF registry key and failed to actually update the GameUX path with it. Because if I replace the old daoriginsgdf from 1.0, it works perfectly fine.
Yep installing update to Visual C++ did it for me

Thankfully this is a easy fix. Compared to my last game with 2 days of work to get the game running(problem was with Visual C++ too).

I've never had any stability problems with the game, even after the patch update. I don't think the patch has anything to do with your crashes, since it sounds like you had these problems before you patched the game.
