I also got it to work by going to ProgramFiles/DragonAge/bin_ship and then double clicking on either daorigins.exe or the shortcut labeled DAOriginsLauncher-MCE if this works for you a temporary fix could be to copy either one and paste a shortcut on your desktop or wherever you want to launch the game from

Fobok, you're a genius! Works fine with the x86 version now. Running Vista x64 SP2 here with a 4870 - are other people having the problem with similar setups?

Someone in this thread got authentication problems with his disc after installing this MS Update, so I haven't bothered to install it. I'm reinstalling the game and will patch the game after the patch has been patched.

Ok, I just reinstalled the game and copied my backed up Addins and Character-directories. I then started the game and logged on to the Dragon Age-servers. The program then automatically started to download the two DLC's which was bundled with my CE. My profile and save games were also intact.

EDIT: Note that I really didn't have to copy my Addins-directory, because the program started to re-download the DLCs anyway.

I had issues playing the game, after the splash screen it would crash and say the game stopped working.  I've been killing myself trying to identify the problem.  I have windows vista, and I noticed a thread about changing the game to run always as administrator.  So I went investigating, and went to the actual .exe file inside steam, steamapps, etc.  and I right clicked, properties, and clicked on the compatability tab.  I noticed under this tab it had an option to run in compatability mode for windows service pack 2.  thinking this odd that it had an option to do this, I checked the box and tried to start the game.  And what do you know, no more problems, the game runs great.  Hope this helps some people.

I had the same problem. The game worked fine until I installed the patch. When I hit start nothing happens. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled without the patch and it runs now. I hope they patch the patch soon. Im using Vista 32 bit.

The problems you've mentioned doesn't seem to have much or anything to do with the startup problems which have been discussed here (we can't even get to the start screens). Perhaps there are other threads here related to crash-problems.

Well, the update to Visual C++ does make the game work if you're having problems with launching it. The icon problem with the games explorer isn't working no matter what you do. I'm guessing they updated the .dll file for the GDF registry key and failed to actually update the GameUX path with it. Because if I replace the old daoriginsgdf from 1.0, it works perfectly fine.

Yep installing update to Visual C++ did it for me

Thankfully this is a easy fix. Compared to my last game with 2 days of work to get the game running(problem was with Visual C++ too).

The real disappointment is that Bioware has said nothing about the total screw up of a patch. They create a patch thread and then lock it so no one can post to it with the feedback. All these threads, and there are a lot, about this problem have been totally ignored by Bioware. So very sad from what was once a very gamer centered company.

Advice to all takin care about new patch: You can fix it with vc++ update but the question is - is it worth it ?

My answer is NO!!

Reinstall game and stay 1.00 - even after fixin patch game starts crashin badly ... U'll encounter classic "windows error" and game downfalls on your wallpaper very often

Worked for me too after installing the ATL Security Update. I wanted the patch since it improves the attack, damage and defense scores at Normal difficulty level. It seems to me that BioWare only tested the patch on systems with the security update already installed.

I've never had any stability problems with the game, even after the patch update. I don't think the patch has anything to do with your crashes, since it sounds like you had these problems before you patched the game.
