Ok I'm a bit late with this but I've just come back to DA. I've downloaded the RtO addon. I loaded my character who completed the game. Can I do it with him? Or is it similar to Wardens Keep? Is it content mid-way through the game?

I thought it would be at the end of the game.

Also, I hear there's an expansion? When's that due for PC?

i do the DLC add-ons (shale/RtO and WK) right after Lothering. (and if you mean DA awaking. thats about the 16th march)

Ah fudge didn't even need to download Ostagar then because I'm not interested in playing through it again.

I believe you can do this, but you'll have to go through the endgame (defending Denerim and killing the Archdemon) again.

It can be done mid-game or after the main mission. I did it after the main mission with my mage and midgame for 2 other playthroughs.

RtO is usually mid-game. However...

Afteryou finished the game, an "epilogue" save will be created for your character - check your character's save games to find it. You can use this save to access your camp and any DLC content. Chronological, the save is right before the final battle so you'll still have Morrigan and either Alistair or the secret companion. Stat-wise your character is saved after the fight with the archdemon so you'll have all the experience and equipment that you gained during the final battle.

As for the Expansion called Awakening, that'll be released on March 16th in the US and on March 18th in Europe. Don't know about other areas, but you can check the Awakening FAQ on the game's website for details.

After beating the game it makes a post-endgame save. Load that. You can do DLC with it and not much else.
