my Dragon Age: Origins game, which i had played as different characters, played fine on an SDTV. It's an R3 disc, but despite the usual bugs and glitches mentioned here, everything was fine--all DLCs worked.
Until I updated the game with the patch--now the game is displaying in distorted black & white. Yeah, i can always play on the HDTV in the living room, but for the most times it's being used, i have to settle for using the large SDTVs instead, which are all set to NTSC.
this sucks, really--the back of the case clearly says supported output is NTSC, and it's been that way since i first bought in in December of last year. until this patch came along--now it's virtually unplayable. i hope Bioware is going to fix this soon.
patch turned ntsc display to PAL output

Haexpane , it sure looks that way
a patch that turns an NTSC disc into PAL and causing more glitches is indicative of poor quality control, which is why i'm not buying Awakening when it launches. i'll just spend the next few months playing Final Fantasy XIII and Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition--at least I can still rely on Square Enix and Capcom for releasing relatively gltich-free games.

any updates on this one? I was THIS close to purchasing a r3 DA: Ultimate Edition for my r3 160gb slim ps3. THe back of the package said that it supports NTSC 480p but this thread is deterring me from getting it immediately.
Has anyone experienced the same problems with DA: Ultimate Edition? or is this only exclusive to stand alone DA: Origins/DA: Awakenings games?
PS: am i able to select which DLC's to install in DA: Ultimate Edition?
thanks

This bug seems to only effect a few people. So I wouldn't worry about it. Plus that was 10 months ago (congrats on necroing a 10 month old thread, you're only the millionth person here to do that). PS3 is region free, simple fact. But the DLC are another matter entirely. But you don't have to worry about that. You're getting a package with ALL of the PAL region DLC on there already.
And yes you can pick and choose which to install and at your leisure. When you insert the disc, 2 icons actually come up. One installs/plays the game, the other brings up a list of all DLC, and you pick and choose which you want to install and when. Do it all in order. Do only a few and throw away the rest, it don't really matter.
EDIT: Thinking about it, I think playing on an SDTV IS the problem. You're not really supposed to be playing another region game on an SDTV. The SD resolution for PAL region countries is different from NA. We're 480i/480p, they're something like 520. 520 or whatever the PAL region SD resolution is, is incompatible with NA SDTVs. The problem does not occur on HDTV's because HD resolutions are actually universal. I don't know why this is. But as long as you play on an HDTV there shouldn't be a problem.

thanks Shadeleon. I know necroing threads is iffy, but I might be referred to this thread anyways. Reason why I'm asking is because diff. people are giving me different feedback; some say it works fine if I have a multi platform TV, others (aka, fellow countrymen) say that it always go b/w even if their other r3 games work fine on their r3 ps3.
I promise to leave this thread alone if perhaps fellow SDTV users would help me out here; I have a region 3 ps3, was about to buy a region 3 DA: Ultimate edition and I live in NTSC land with an NTSC SDTV (when I was playing RE4 for my old ps2, it gives the "flickering b/w" effect until I hit NTSC mode). Will I have any issues with a r3 da: ultimate edition even if it clearly says, that it can support "HDTV 480i" and that "it will display the game in SDTV resolution" if my hdtv isn't compatible?
THe reason why I'm asking this is because when I was researching if this game will display properly on my tv, i came across this post (a local ps3 forum);
" still am wondering why my R3 ver of this game is in black and white while other R3 games aren't whenever I try playing on my SDTV
my TV supports NTSC"

The problem is the resolutions, like I said. Not whether it support NTSC or not. In NA the standard definition resolution is 480. In PAL regions, it's 520. The two are incompatible period. HD resolutions like 720p, 1080i, and 1080p are what you should be using because THOSE are actually universal across all regions, meaning that all regions have those same resolutions. I do not advise using an SD resolution in this case. Be happy you get black and white. I know some people who have tried this with other games and have gotten NO picture at all.

Hmmm....if I understood you correctly SHadelon, basically, if the box of the r3 DA: Ultimate edition says it can support NTSC/480P/720P, then my NTSC SDTV shouldn't have issues, correct?
thanks for your patience

You will probably still have issues, I'm afraid, because what you seem to not understand is that NTSC has absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever. It is entirely the resolution. First 480p is what's known has Enhanced Definition, not technically SD. Your SDTV is probably incompatible with 480p. The standard SD resolution for North American TV's is and always will be 480i. For PAL region TV's, the standard SD resolution is 520i. The two are never supposed to meet. They're incompatible with eachother.
My strong recommendation is to use an HDTV, period. You will have problems using an SDTV with this no matter what.

aaah. now i get it. I actually don't own Dragon Age yet; i was checking out reviews when I came across the posts from SDTV users with mixed feedback; one gave feedback that of all his region 3 and region 1 games, only Dragon Age would display in b/w on his SDTV. Another mentioned that he had no problems whatsoever. A third mentioned that I must have a SDTV that can support both PAL and NTSC.
These mixed feedback is what got me confused as googling would not give me a straight answer until now.
