Most overrated or underrated game you have ever played?

I was just wondering what would you list as the most overrated or underrated game in your own opinion?
For me personally I would have say that games like Okami and Shadow of the Colossus dont get the attention they deserve, it is a shame that titles like those who dare to be different are ignored and instead it seems that todays gamer would rather play the next generic shooter than to try something different.
Shadow of the Colossus had some of the best boss fights I had ever seen, sure the game was pretty much mostly made up of boss fights but then that is what the game was all about, who here can say that trying to take down the giant bird while it barrel rolls and bucks through the air trying to shake your character off was anything but amazing?
Okami played a bit like zelda but it also had one of the most unique artistic style I have seen in a videogame, that coupled with a great story, unique characters and the unique spirit brush gameplay mechanic made Okami a great game.
One game however that I am shocked that it diddnt get the attention it deserves is Planescape Torment, how could you ignore this game? While those who have played it loved it there are few that have actually played it, hell I dont even think it was actually released in Australia as I had to order my copy from overseas. This game dared to be different, while other RPGs had your character fight for the greater good and slay the evil wizard, dragon or whatever Planescape Torment had a story that was deeper and more personal to the character you played and depending on how you played your character he could hardly be said to be fighting for the greater good. This game had a great story and memorable characters and a unique setting and would have to be one of the best RPGs to date.
Now onto the most overrated game. While this probably isnt one of the most overrated games I have ever played I do think that it gets far more credit than it deserves. I know I will probably get my head bitten off for this but I feel it must be said.
Mass Effect.
Now before you flame me let me explain, dont get me wrong I did enjoy Mass Effect but I do think that some people give it more credit than it deserves. To be brutally honest Mass Effects gameplay wasnt very good, I know that it was probably Bioware's first venture into the shooter genre to be honest it was a bit sloppy, combat relied mostly on stats and due to the horrible AI skill was unnecesary and cover was useless, in the end battles came down to who had the higer health bar. The side quests and the planet exploration was mind numbingly boring and due to the fact that nearly every side quest used the same building, the same mine or the same underground bunker you were sick of them after only a few missions. The only thing that saved Mass Effect was its story which by the way wasnt quite as good as some of Bioware's past titles (In my opinion of course).
In my opinion Mass Effect would have to be one of the worst games Bioware has ever made. Of course the same criticism cannot be applied to Mass Effect 2 as Bioware has made some huge improvements over the first.
But anyway what would you say is one of the more overrated or underrated games you have played?

According to the Marketing Campaign: This game is the best game ever!!!!!! It will totally redifine the RPG genre! Baldur's Gate's scifi brother is finally here!
In reality: It was a good game. It was fun to play, but nothing earth-shattering.

Borderlands also gets a vote for "over hyped". It's really not that great, and I've just completely given up on it. It's horrible to play (the FoV is irritating) and the graphics were quite bland.
Can't really think of anything und... Oh!
Stronghold for "Under rated". Absolute gem of a game!

I tinkered with every class. I practically lived on Battlenet for almost a year...
Then Diablo 2 rolled around. I didn't buy it right away because I had to choose between it and Icewind Dale. Being on a serious Infinity Engine kick after Baldur's Gate, and enjoying that game immensely, I went with Icewind Dale first. When I did buy Diablo 2 I found it dull as hell. The environments were prettier and it was nice to have all that space. Plus the tree system was way better and classes felt uniquely defined this time around. Yet, I couldn't get into it. It was just more of the same endless hack 'n' slash with a bare minimum of story, and by then I was getting sick of Battlenet's immature community as well. After Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and even the heavily action oriented Icewind Dale, Diablo 2 just couldn't compare. It was too samey and repetitive and was missing Diablo's charm. I put it away in my closet and never looked back.

My submission to the 'Overrrated Games' Topic is Spore. I got my $50 bucks out of the Main Game, but all of the expansion stuff is asking too much cash for too little to offer.

It's barely gone down in price in the UK (from what I can tell) and it's really putting me off buying it, especially when I factor in everything I've heard about it.

Overrated? I always thought that Starcraft was pretty lame. I've always been more of a Warcraft kind of guy.

Spore is ridiculous. It's one of those games I'd pick up if they released a version with all the expansions/extras, but otherwise I wouldn't buy.

The creation tools are really great, there just isn't much of a game there.

That's how I feel about The Sims franchise, especially because EA just seems to be pumping expansions for every new Sims game like crazy (Sims 2 had an absolutely insane number of expansion and content packs, while Sims 3 seems to be going the same route + DLC content). And worst of all is that they never release any kind of Ultimate package that includes to ALL of this or something similar.OnlyShallow89 wrote...

Underrated? Hmm. I own and love Okami and Shadow of the Colossus as well. Really great games.

That covers my underrated.
I am expecting some flack but Modern Warfare 2 would be one of the most overhyped and overrated games of all time.
The single player campaign should of been called "The Story of a Solider That Can Not Jump" or "How many Helicopters can you be in when a Nuke Blows Up?"
"But Addiction it is not about the single player, the multiplayer is where its at!!"
So where did those millions of dollars they spent end up? Paying Roaylties to Eminem to use his song for the advertisements because it sure as hell was not used on changing or improving the multiplayer.
I like CoD. They are fun games but in my honest opinion MW2 deserves little of the praise it got. Other then it is fun.

Um, every marketing campaign for every AAA title ever released ever? They're MARKETING the game, so it's their JOB to make the game look like "DA BEST THING EVAR!!"

As for overrated? Anything Final Fantasy is super overrated garbage.
Underrated? I'll say Eternal Darkness is definitely up there as overlooked and whatnot.

I don't think the Sims should be mentioned because the Sims is not a game.
It's just a digital doll house.

My favorite Zelda game, but calling it "underrated" is quite a stretch. It sold very well, and got very good reviews.

Myst.
Barely even qualifies as a game. Playing it is about as fun as looking through a picture book.

It's your favorite? Really? Not to judge. Everyone is entitled to make their choices. It's just a rarity to find someone that holds Majora's Mask as the best Zelda game. I found it entertaining enough but kind of un-Zelda-like in ways. I also didn't like having to beat the clock. Time based questing has never sat well with me.
Maybe I'm too old fashioned though. I still hold A Link to the Past as the best Zelda game ever. Most people I've known cite that or Ocarina of Time as their favorite. There was one thing about Majora's Mask I did enjoy however: it had the original Zelda theme. It's one of the few themes on that OST I liked. It's also one of those OSTs that makes me wonder why I bought it to begin with, but I digress.
