Most overrated or underrated game you have ever played?

Overrated:
Final Fantasy VII
I found the story for the most part predictable and I liked very few of the characters. I particularly hated Cloud. While not guessing beforehand that they were going to kill off Aerith, it didn't come as a big surprise since she wasn't first party member to be killed off in a final fantasy and afterwards it seem to me that the only real purpose she served was to be killed. Despite all I disliked about it I did have fun playing it and there are worse final fantasies (like FFVIII), but to me it was no where near as good as people make it out to be.
Halo series
I had fun playing though the Halo games, except ODST which I can't bring myself to buy due to how short its single player is, but they are not nearly as good as a lot of people say they are. Maybe part of my problem is that I have no interest in multiplayer at all and that apparently is where most of the praise for the games seems to come from.
Underrated:
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Both of these for the reasons that have been already given in this topic.

The ending choice was pretty bad too. They give you an option to bring back those you've loved, and it doesn't include your sister? My sister was the only character I had an emotional attatchment to.
Actually it does but you never get to see her, she sends you a letter instead. However I too think the ending choice is crap as it gives you a choice between bringing back the ones you love (your dog your wives and your kids) or the people who died because of Luciens actions (exeot for your dog your wives ect) or 1 million gold.
Shouldnt bringing back those who died because of Lucien bring back your family, your dog, your wives ect since it was Lucien who was responsible for their deaths?

A letter? When do you get that? I must of missed this entirely, and I was pretty outraged over not getting my sister back. So was my roomie xD.
Yeah the whole latter section felt rushed, and the end choices didn't make much sense to me. My roomie, for instance, took the 1 million gold, and we quickly learned that one million gold goes fast, and may not be worth it at all. Plus gold doesn't feel like it has much worth to begin with. Unique property and gold would of been better.

If you have enough properties it is easy to get gold pretty fast, especially if you save the game then go to the date setting in your Xbox and set the year to 2025 and load up your game again

Halo(Very ordinary shooter, boring and overhyped)
BG1 and 2(Yes I went there)
Deus Ex(Don't hate me:unsure:)
System Shock 2(SHODAN was the only good thing about this game)
Mirror's Edge(Terrible idea and terrible camera)
Final Fantasy VI(and all JRPGs in general)
Underrated:
Thief Series(Very unique approach to the stealth genre and a really awesome protagonist)
Legacy of Kain Series(Some of the best story and dialogue I've ever seen and heard in a game)
Assassin's Creed(It has it's flaws but I still love it)
Mass Effect 2
Jade Empire
Dynasty Warriors series
Fatal Frame aka, Project Zero(This is one of the only games that has managed to scare me, it wasily gets overshadowded by less subtle horror game).
That's the ones I can think of.

I am sorry but how the hell is Deus Ex overrated and Assassins Creed underrated? If you are going to post such outlandish claims then please explain your reasoning for this. Also how is the Baldurs gate series overrated?
If anything Deus Ex would have to be underrated and doesnt get the credit it deserves and the Baldurs Gate series would probably have to be the best thing to come from Bioware.

It comes down to personal opinion. And IMO Baldur's Gate is hardly the best BioWare game.
I don't think Deus Ex deserves the praise to be honest, I appreciate the story and characters sure but it really has messy gameplay that frustrated me to no end. The Interface, interaction, combat etc was poor. I can say the same about System Shock 2, more tedious than it should be.
Assassin's Creed is just fun, I can understand that it won't suit everyone's taste but the amountof hate it receives on forums is just ridiculous. It's probably one of the first games that I've played which made it possible to climb almost any surface plus the assassinations were cool. True it was reptitive and that's what anoyed most people but I have a lot of patience and just ignored that(I spent a lot of time epxloring, colllecting flags, killing templars and climbing those lookout towers). Anyway II'm starting to ramble on a bit.

As for Underrated, I don't know right now.
DeusEx wasn't underrated. It got awards everywhere, top scores, critical acclaim, etc. And it was all around awesome game (best one I have ever played in those 18 years I play games)
DeusEx was more like 'under-appreciated' (can't come up with a better term) by the mainstream audience.

Your gripe with the combat in Deus Ex is understandable, unless you have your gun skill maxed your aim really sucks and thus in the earlier stages at least you cant really play the game run and gun like a normal shooter, however Deus Ex is not a normal shooter and call me crazy but I think that its weakness is also one of its strengths. Deus Ex was never meant to be a run and gun head on shooter, the fact that head on run and gun tactics were not so effective at the start of the game forced you to find different ways to approach the situation whether that be go in stealthy, hack your enemies defenses and turn them against them or find an alternate route with less resistance, it was this combined with the great story that made Deus Ex great.

I still find it hard to call Assassins Creed overrated, it did get good reviews and still has a pretty good fan following, however it did cop a bit of flak on the forums which I must say wasnt undeserved.
First off I must say that Assassins Creed did a brilliant job on the gameplay mechanics, the controls were top notch and the free running was fluid and a lot of fun, sure they could have done better in the stealth department but everything else was fine. However while they may have gotten the base gameplay mechanics right where they failed was in mission design, the side missions were bland boring and repeditive and the assassinations werent much better, when it comes down to it all of the assassinations were pretty much jump the guy while his back is turned then run like hell back to the guild HQ.

Another Overrated game:
Left 4 Dead 2. I'm enjoying it, yes, and I'm gonna continue in a few moments, but it's really not all that. It's just L4D with less interesting characters, slightly prettier graphics and one more standard campaign (Well, it released with one more. I think), endless variations of effectively the same weapon and melee weapons.
I can see myself playing it, but I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as L4D1. Mmm, Zoey.

When I say underrated I dont mean the score it got from the monkeys at Gamespot or IGN as they are usually full of ****, I usually go by how it was recieved by the gaming community and what their general opinion on it is.

Probably the group of younger kids who got to DeusEx just recently... that group seem to be growing more and more lately.
Still, I'm going to disagree with you on using the term "underrated" when it comes to DeusEx, if you don't mind.

for me, vampire the masquerade: bloodlines was probably the most underrated game ever made. what a great freaking game that was. one of only two games that i ever played all the way through back to back.
another vastly underrated game to me was shadowun for the old sega genesis.

I think people are getting confused underrated does not necesarily mean that it got low scores from reviewers, it can also mean under apreciated and yes I feel that Deus Ex was under apreciated, the fact that less people would even give it a go and instead go for the generic shooters makes it under apreciated.
If we apply the logic that underrated means the game got low review scores then half the games in this thread wouldnt fit.
It is the same with overrated, it can mean that the game got high review scores that it diddnt deserve but it can also mean that the fans give it more credit than it deserves.
