Thanks; I'll definitely check that link out.  I feel that now I'm have more time with the PS3 and RPGs in general, I might like it better.  Knowing what I'm doing helps as well; I got started on video games a lot later than most people in these forums, and don't get to play as regularly as I would like.

Glad to help! Also: I've been playing games as long as I can remember. My mom was a Zelda fan, you see.

I'm all about giving games second chances; I remember hating FFX when I started playing it originally (as a rental).  I returned it, and then inexplicably bought it later on.  After that, it was one of my favorite games for quite some time.  I remember giving up on Ocarina of Time for a while as well (it was the first video game I played, and it was a challenge for me), but loved it when I went back to it later.

Oblivion may be my "project" in August, when I don't have work or college classes.  Sounds like a good way to spend the last few weeks of the summer to me!  Image IPB

Three cheers for giving games second chances!

*Grumbles*

I start college next school year. Wish me luck.

I didn't start playing console games until I was 13, so I did get a bit behind.

Good luck!

College is far better than high school, I promise.  My high school experience wasn't bad by any means, but college was a step up in every way.

I'm starting a Masters program in the fall, which shall be lovely.  I'm looking forward to the change of pace, and perhaps I won't feel so old. Image IPB

That's not that late. There are people who were forbidden to own video games until they moved out of their parent's place.

Thanks! I'll need it.

I'm kind of in the same boat. My HS experience hasn't been bad, but I doubt that I'll look back on my life and consider them my "golden years".

What's your major? I'm considering psychology.

And overrated... both left 4 deads... thats a personal vendetta. whats good about any zombie game? movies are ok for thrillers, but really the only story to that series is "lets get out of here." I mean come on add a part where your looking for the cure or something. ughhh im just a gamer of storyline... or reallllly great (balanced) multiplayer. i havent played the 2nd L4D but my friends all do, and i can pretty much say its the same except you can be zombies now. yayyy... awesome ?

You can play as the Infected in Left 4 Dead as well, y'know.
But L4D1 and L4D2 are subtly different in ways. But as for finding the cure or something? You're four random people; you're not military personnel and you're fighting to get evacuated, NOT to save everyone.

Sure, the combat should not be in the game but I think the story and experience was overall amazing.

Have to disagree, Merin, at least from a UK point of view.
One of the most popular gaming magazines (think it was PC Gamer or PC Zone) constantly prattled on about Beyond Good & Evil along with Psychonauts. I think they're in the same boat as Planescape and Deus Ex; underplayed and not underrated.

I suppose it depends on one's opinion of underrated. I cited Beyond Good & Evil in one of these threads. I'm not sure if it was this one or the other, but in that instance I was thinking of whether or not a game was commercially successful. Still though, I wouldn't put Beyond Good & Evil and Psychonauts with Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex. Their followers don't seem nearly as crazed and prolific as some of the Planescape/Fallout/Deus Ex crowd.

Beyond Good and Evil got some very good critical reviews, but it tanked.  HARD.  It was meant to be a trilogy and tanked so hard the trilogy got canceled.

There was some of the "best game you never played" hype about it for a year or so afterwards, and you can find a few people who will bring it up, but...
Seagloom is right.  It's not on most people's radar, and it is DEFINITELY NOT in the Planescape or Deus Ex camp.
Hell, Deus Ex was successful when it was released.  Deus Ex may be many things, but it certainly has never (even on release) qualified as "underrated" or a "cult classic" (as cult classic means a hidden, overlooked gem that develops a following later.)

Anywho, BG&E often shows up in "best of" lists created by game reviewers and game magazines / sites partially because they play a lot more games than the average person so they experienced it.  But even looking at those lists?  200th best out of 200 at IGN is underrated, and IMO 22nd best XBOX game is underrated by a bunch too (I can only think of maybe 8 games on the XBOX I'd rate better personally.)

Suppose you're both right, but I've always found BG&E (and Psychonauts, for that matter) very hard to acquire until I got both in a Steam sale.

Maybe it was a Supply/Demand issue as to why it flopped? I can't remember that far back, truth be told.

Ah well, back to my pondering :D

I worked at EB Games when BG&E came out. It was a big release, and that just made the poor sales hurt all the more. That said, it was released at a very bad time when several other highly anticipated sequels came out, so...

And, hey, the other thread finally got closed. My Monday prediction was off by about 2 days.

Here's one for possibly underrated:

Dark Messiah: Might & Magic - It's the first non-strategy M&M game we've had since #9, and with the way UbiSoft seems to be working, possibly the last. It's not got the length, the depth nor the gameplay of the original 9 games (it's just an FPS without the guns, more like magic/swords/ranged) but it's a perfectly playable title in its own right. Set in the same world as HoM&M5 (I think that's right), it's a good game with some slight balance issues in certain areas but there's a few puzzles and some excellent combat moments.

Whilst it's not unique or anything overly special, it's a rarity in that it's a decent first person non-shooter.

Can we lay off Halo for a bit? I mean we get it, everybody hates Halo, if you look up Overrated in the dictionary you will see a picture of Master Chief, can we give it a rest now?

But the question does arise, how can Halo be overrated when everybody hates it so much?

I love Halo. I don't think it's the best game franchise (and I honestly have a big issue of the near-lack of futuristic progression in it), but it's damn good fun and I really look forward to Reach.

And most over-rated game? Definitely FF7. Underrated game? Mother 3. It's pretty much requirement for any person with a soul. That or the entire Shin Megami Tensei series.

Um, I don't hate Halo. Halo was a lot of fun. But it was also the most overrated game I ever played. Why can't it be both.

FF7 was the most underrated gam I ever played. Yes, even with all the hype surrounding it.

I really like BG2 and often used it to compare other games to, but yes, at least amongst Bioware fans, I think it gets praised a bit more than it deserves.  It deserves praise, just not as much as I've seen.

And Wild Arms - thats the JRPG Western series, right?  I always wanted to try it (I'd love a good Western RPG, as in Wild West not USA/Europe) but I had a few people I trusted the opinions of, ones who were way more into JRPGs than I ever was, tell me it was mediocre.

What did you like about it?

I'm not even going to lie twas really mediocre. VA was horrible, graphics were meh, storyline typical racism is bad! variety but something about the whole thing together made me enjoy it.

...Then again I'm insane. :D

I don't know if you could consider this underrated but I enjoyed mech simulators like Earthsiege and Mechwarrior. Even though you could finish these games without leaving your chair, there was enough action to keep you hooked for the short campaigns.

As for overrated:

- Halo 3 and ODST (as soon as I heard news that this franchise was gonna be milked to death, I stopped caring about it)
- World of Warcraft (this game by far has the most douchebaggery I've ever seen)
- Anything developed by EA (as well as some of the games developed by 3rd parties and published by EA)
- Sacred 2 (mediocre voice acting, "average" plot, more technical issues than a Toyota.  I would've given this a 1/10 instead of a 7/10.)

Underrated: Rise of the Argonauts

Really, the only thing that I thought deserved the panning this game got, was how stiff the character expressions were during conversations (even if they changed postures at times).

Overrated: Resident Evil 5, most other Resident Evil games

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's where the control scheme adds an artificial layer of difficulty to a game. I have never played a series of games with a more contrived control scheme than the Resident Evils.

To be fair, the first four REs were justified. There wasn't much other way to effectively make a game like RE other than with the tank controls and RE4 was a pioneer in third-person shooting regardless. In RE5, the inability to move while shooting is entirely friggin' ridiculous and nonsensical. Actually, just came up with a game that isn't talked about enough for it's own good.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. It's absolutely fantastic. The graphics are excellent, no Pyramid Head fanservice and even though the word 'remake' tends to get scoffs, it's what's essentially a remake in name only. Same characters but entirely different and amazing story (with an equally amazing ending). Oh yeah, and the psychology test that determined all those factors in the game was awesome too.
