Any news if they plan to support a 64-bit operating system? Games are heading in that direction, it'd be a shame if BioWare fell behind...

Hmm -- I'm running the Steam version of Mass Effect on a 64 bit version of Win7. Does the retail version not support it?

Of course, I'm here looking for a fix for rendering errors, so obviously your mileage may vary....

There likely won't be any work put in by Bioware and EA to officially support Win 7 64 bit for old games.

However I've had no issues playing Mass Effect 1 on my Win 7 64bit machine. Its still a 32 bit application, however.

I've tried running this game as administrator, and i've tried compatibility mode for XP Sp 2 and 3, but I can't get the game to run smoothly. It runs....just super slowly.

Intel i7 930@2.80 gHz, Nvidea Geforce GTX 260, 8GB ram, Windows 7 64bit

Any ideas? I already ordered a copy of Win 98 SE so I could play Thief Dark Project again, can ME1 be run on 98SE?

XP or Vista only. (according to box) Given that 98SE only addresses up to 768mb ram (regardless of what windows reports the system as having), I doubt any amount of tweaks would be sufficient to get it operational. However, I'll be happy to be proven wrong, and I'll willingly give you a cookie for your efforts. :)

Do you have DirectX9.0c loaded as well as DX 10 or 11?

If you are running the latest and greatest drivers for your nVidia, try rolling them back a revision or two. Sometimes the newer drivers cause havoc with older cards.

In addition to becoming all discombobulated  when as much as 1.5 GBs of RAM are present (no matter the setting to tell Windows to only use 512, or 768), it has some time-constrained functions that fail when faced with comparatively high CPU core speeds.  I had a perfectly good old PC come back from college with my niece a few years ago, when she wanted an upgrade for Graduate School, and I held onto all of the parts I removed.

When I wanted to run KotOR and / or NWN1 relatively recently, all I needed that wasn't in the parts drawers was a nice case, so I rebuilt an oldie.  But I installed Windows2000 on it, not Win98se.

You ordered your PC and you dont even know which OS version you're running. I dont mean to sound callous, but until you get an idea on what a computeer comprises of, theres not much anyone can do to help as you are unable to provide the information required for cprrect troubleshooting. I recommend a "PC Basics" course at your local school/uni.

Then, I recommend a few more things. Like reading the "Read First" thread, found here;

You will also learn that Win7 is not on the list of supported operating systems. So if you know nothing about computers, and are playing a game not designed for Win7, you're in a bit of a bind.

It's quite common for people that aren't all with it in computers not to know what bit version they are running. If I remember correctly it should be in a dxdiag report. For that just go start>type in dxdiag>select it>then search through the tabs on the top of the report which should lead you to your bit version. If it isn't there like I remembered or thought I remembered just run the configuration on mass effect and it should tell you your os in one of the options on the left. Though I'm not sure the different bit versions affect the game differently from one another

I believe that if we check, we will find that it doesn't make any difference what OS that member has, his hardware is something useless, or practically so, for games (done, and it's true).

I see this is an old post, so I just wanted to add just encase someone came across this and needed help. Whenever you are playing an older games the first thing you need to do after installing the game is check the game website for updates, and if there is one download and install. So, anyone having an issue running ME1 on Windows 7 64 go to website and download the latest patch. I have included the present url to the patch for ME 1.
