I play this game (and most games) very aggressively. I like charging in on the Vanguard. I enjoy throwing out a combat drone on my engineer and charging the enemy with SMG fire. I love getting in close on the infiltrator while cloaked and surprising enemies.

I thought the soldier would be the most in-your-face of all the classes, but I was dissapointed to find that it was the class I had to play most defensively. Adrenaline Rush is really great, but with the damage you take on Insanity, I'm still hiding behind cover and just popping out to AR/shoot. Soldier is good, and the damage was high, it just wasn't any fun for me.

I guess it just never felt like a challenge.

What was your setup? I was a commando and could still take a beating mostly because of hardened adrenaline and collector armor which is a life saver.

Thread title should be changed to "most boring class".

Boring?   You have all the guns.  You can snipe a Merc's head off with the Widow, you can shotgun blast a Krogan in the face with the Eviscerator and you can dismantle anything with repeated headshots from the Vindicator or laugh like a madman as you mow down anything that moves with the Revenant.

I just wish, you could get the Revenant and the Widow at the same time. Well that and that I could swap the Tempest in for my pistol, I love my Vindicator; but it would be nice to have something full auto on my hip instead of the hand cannon which is just a less accurate, less powerful version of my Vindicator.

Most classes in the game usually re-spec or change their tactics depending on the enemies. The soldier class, however, regardless of difficulty/enemy types/battlefield layout, play  the exact same way:
1) snipe with adrenaline rush to soften up the 1st wave
2) switch to revenant, kill off the first wave
3) advance to a closer cover or snipe the 2nd wave
4) rinse and repeat...

This makes them the simplest class to play in the game. Which is great if you just want to shoot things.

You can, obviously, take the Krogan claymore for more challenge rather than just taking Revenant - but even with it, the soldier build itself is still the same.
Basically, the soldier's gameplay will be the same regardless of the build or master weapon chosen.

Nothing wrong with that... just the textbook definition of boring in my book.

In my book, it says your book sucks.  ;)

All this talk about soldiering just made me roll another one after my boring adept playthrough.  I actually tend to play soldier in between trying out the other classes, just to "cleanse the palette".   Like a delightful sorbet made of high velocity rounds, and pure twitch based gameplay.

Very  narrow minded. I love using most of my guns until I aquire the Revenant machine gun. I also don't use your step by step process since having a plan is stupid rather than just changing your weapons pertaining to how best to deal with the current threat. I wonder if you have fun at all playing any class with a step by step plan for everything.

Well, the soldier class is built for those who don't like to plan their method of controlling the battlefield.

It's a very simple class to play since the only thing required is aiming and taking cover.

The main strength of the soldier is his ability to fight effectively at mid-range. None of the other classes excell at this range in weapon based combat unless they choose assault rifle training at the collector ship. The tempest is not terrible at mid-range but it's no where close to the vindicator. The viper works decently at mid range but shotguns work terribly there. That's why it's a good idea to choose another weapon type with the vanguard.

The soldier is as effective at sniping as an infiltrator (if not more) and with the LMG, is as deadly at short range as the vanguard. The vanguard will always be better with a shotgun because of the charge but adrenaline claymore 1 shots harbingers.

Of course for what's the challenge when you plan for something? Especially in a videogame where one playthrough can give you a great idea on where everyone will be.

Agreed!  After just finishing a "caster" Sentinel play-through, I just need to get my hands on a Revenant and wreak havoc on my enemies!  I need the powah!  :o

Its interesting that some enemies just go immidiatly in cover when the infiltrator use cloak...(happens with the blue suns for example).A soldier doesnt have such problems when using adrenaline rush.

Soldier class is definately only for those who are a ground+pound type of person

i love using the soldier, mainly cause of the fact that if there's a part of the ability i don't use? then it's just left alone

otherwise, my inferno, my adrenaline and my Shredder ammo are my Big 3

Incendiary Ammo and/or AP ammo would be a huge improvement over Shredder Ammo.  Shredder Ammo is the worst ability in the game.

I personally only had 1 VERY serious gripe with the class Soldier (Favorite in ME1). Aim that was just as weak as every other class. When I think of soldier class for ME2, I though of only 2 things. 1. Some form of immunity ( Godly ability in ME1) 2. Near perfect aim.

How disappointed I was to see the class lacked natural armor and had bad aim. Just to make me even more ticked when playing insanity mode and see EVERY NPC w/ EVERY WEAPON have near perfect aim and could keep it up for an average of 10 seconds. My soldier could come nowhere near as good of aim. Very hurt from class by choosing to master bullets over learning how to use the weapons like a well...soldier.

Does anybody know exactly how the aoe on inferno ammo works? Does the ignition/aoe cause damage to armor on secondary targets in range or does it just ignite them to panic through defenses?

Oh and in regards to ammo, I found warp ammo generally the most effective and disruptor a solid backup for dealing with synthetics.

Warp ammo doesn't have the highest bonus, but it's useful against *everything* and therefore minimizes ammo switching. Even bots will usually have an armor or health bar to chew through. Versus Geth, or a swarm of bots, swap to disruptor to maximize killing power.

people could argue the soldier is difficult due to the lack of powers, but remember were the soldier lacks in powers they make up for it in bullets

ya adepts are a biotic powerhouse, infiltrators are a shot behind the head waiting to happen, but a soldier is a walking armory that knows how to aim down it's sights

so ya if your way of fighting is guns, guns, guns then the soldier won't be a hard at all

and btw i think the slow-mo thing is the best power
