I'm seriously hoping they choose the HNF for the canon character instead. They always make the canon characters male. But I feel like the female one fits the canon better, since she's more involved with Alistair usually.
It's far more likely to be male and have Alistair marry Anora, leaving the Warden free to do his thang...but I seriously doubt BioWare will make a canon ending
Oh and KotOR2's canon was female exile, so canons aren't always male...just most of the time

Yea it does seem like Bioware is gearing up for the HMN to be their canon character, I just hope that if they expand on the story in later games or in books, they put in nods to the other origins and don't simply pretend they didn't exist.
David Gaider has already stated that any future games will have nothing to do with Blights or darkspawn, so there probably won't be any need to make any mention save something basic along the lines of "the Warden that ended the fifth Blight". Having said that, given that no matter what origin you play in DA:O, all the others happen and are referenced, I can't see any reason why they would pretend none of them existed

I dont care what gender the canon is, but they better be evil. Evil characters are never canon. Atleast the Exile is female in canon.
Evil is boring.

No no. Cookies from a chubby kid in the last village. Or saving a cat from a tree for apples as rewards.

Sten was helping that child, who clearly needed no more cookies.

Like I have a Dalish elf who couldn't care less about most humans. But in particular, the Keeper cursing humans into werewolves bothers the hell out of her. Because he did it selfishly, without thinking how it might affect his clan. So she chooses to force him into ending the curse, even though she would never normally draw a weapon against one of her kind.
Motivations and actions are very complex and depend on the character/person. You can make anyone interesting if you delve deep enough.

Yes. He was also helping himself to his favorite confection, which he kindly gave to Carroll as a bribe.
I was waiting for someone to get my references. Makes me kinda sad not to see anyone poking at the latter one, since that's probably the funniest moment in NWN2.

Same with the Anvil of the Void. Sure it enslaves souls and was and will be abused but it also makes golems which stop alot of dwarves from dying against the darkspawn.Nhadalie wrote...
And actually doing nice things doesn't make you a good guy necessarily. It's all a matter of perspective and motivation.

I agree that the canon should be the HNF.
For instance, if you read that recent comic "The Revelation" illustrated by Aimo, even if you ignore the fact that the warden is referenced as a "she", you'll see that the situation kinda fits better with a female warden (specially one that romanced Alistair).
Actually, I'll even say that the canon would more likely be the one in wich the HNF marries Alistair.
The history of the game kinda compels you to choose Alistair as the King, and it also kinda forces the fact that he will not have a legitimate heir (a warden alone can hardly have a children, 2 wardens together have even less chances, Anora is also infertile). And we should have in mind that it also states several times that Alistair dislikes Anora and she "is also very much her father's daughter, and like her father she is
capable of setting morals aside to achieve the ends she desires", as described in the toolset - a fact that makes me wonder if she is indeed destined to be the canon Queen of Ferelden.
Having the HNF as the canon queen would not only nulify the possibility of a legitimate heir (wich seems to be the intended outcome), but it would also avoid Anora being Queen and make the Dark Ritual something unavoidable (both the PC and Alistair would have to be alive at the ending).

Exactly. Thank you for showing all the reasons that I thought the HNF would be the best canonical character.
A HNF who marries Alistair and becomes princess-consort ties into the storyline the most neatly out of all the possible origins.

I'd like to see the canonical character be something entirely out of left field - like a Female Dwarf Noble, or a Male City Elf.
What would really be left field is if the Grey Warden you played never really existed. Alistair did everything in DA:O himself, including getting the group together and defeating the Archdemon.

That's as likely as Alistair leading us to lunch.

There are some things that definitely fit females more, though. Like the city elf origin. MUCH better when told from the female perspective.
